I wrote this before here, but apparently, people can't read. Your phone doesn't have AI, it is a simple algorythm that controls the charging.
There are two different charging modes. One controlled by an algorythm when the handset is on and the other limited only by the strength of the charging unit when the handset is off.
The algorythm method is termed "optomized charging" by Sony Ericsson and is designed to protect the battery in the handset by not allowing an "overcharge". It provides protection by reducing the voltage differential between the battery and the charger as the battery approaches its peak design voltage.
With the handset is turned off, the charger simply continues to try to elevate the voltage in the battery until it's in parity with the charger. That process, continued too long, will overheat and damage the battery.
Sony Ericsson technical support advises not to let the handset charge overnight when the handset is turned off . The resultant overcharge condition shortens battery life considerably. If you do elect to charge the handset's battery while the phone is turned off, limit charging time to 3 hours.
And yes, the battery indicator, showing a full charge when the handset is turned on, will once again show that the battery is charging when the phone is turned off because it is charging, it's overcharging.

. . . . .full drain, then charge till the bar meter stops to a halt !
Just forget all about those 12-14-16-18 hours of charging, unless you are using a bettery of this kind mates

yeah im with ya, but i got this from a guy that suppose to know what hes talking about.. go figure
"The first few charge rule isn't about "memory effect" anyway - it is to ensure that all the cells get properly initialised as they won't all get charged properly within the normal 2 hour charge cycle. The trickle charge for the extra couple of hours ensures that all the cells do get fully charged and significantly improves the subsequent performance of the battery. "

@Swedish_Knife - I hope @wrath000 reads your last post, he got quite confused with that issue that you tackled in your last paragraph - mate |

I told my Dad to let the battery go almost empty, then charge to full, while phone is on. He has still his first battery on his T28World. Still working great after over 3 years.

The battery is partly charged but you shouldn't use the phone untill you charge it completely. The first time you charge, simply charge untill it stops charging.

This confuses me. As you say, the battery is partly charged (about 25%) when you buy it, but why can't that power be used before the battery charges for the first time?

What wrath000 was saying was that a Li-ion battery (maybe polymer too) should not get discharged too deep (below 25%) because that will kill the battery (a disadvantage of Li-ion batteries).
Because of this disadvantage, manufactures put in a safety switch that will turn off the phone (after battery low warning) before the battery actually reach that level. Therefore, in my opinion, it is harmless to play a little before the first battery charge, provided that the low bat warning does not come on.
