All Xperia 1 II hands on videos are running super early firmware from few months ago (new firmware doesn't have Sony Phone app). Sample shots look pathetic but don't expect miracles with new firmware, maybe 10 to 15 percent improvement and few additional features such as 4K/60 etc. Sony is still not doing automatic HDR stacking and tone mapping. To be honest iPhone 11 Pro comparable shots in a hands on article are a mess as well, HDR tone mapping is violent and makes the whole image atrocious.

😰😰😰

If it is made to be "mobile A9", of course it won't do HDR+.
Stacking is for static subject.

I'm not even sure what does that mean, sure manufacturers are in no rush to push new products any soon but getting out of the business I highly doubt. But they are right Asus didn't announce anything.

Looks like future phones are getting cancelled or delayed.
So, there is no guarantee 5 ii will be out.

Honestly to me it doesn't make sense to release 5 half a year later than 1 cause they are the same lineup like S20 and S20+ By the time 5 gets released it costs as same as 1 and hell a lot more than S20. It doesn't make any sense considering it doesn't bring any improvements to 1. What Sony did with XZ2 and XZ3 made sense cause XZ3 was refresh of XZ2 and it was perfect for those who were in the time to upgrade but couldn't with XZ2.

Perfect product planning would be to announce 1/5/10 at the same time as product blitzkrieg and then announce 3 and 8 in fall as upgrades to 5 and 10 respectively. Tick Tock strategy.

Sample shots actually look very good.

There's indeed a market for it. Too bad Sony don't launch them together.

5 is for me cause I don't want a big device but I didn't get it because of two things:

a) Price is the same as 1, the device that does more than 5 so it puts me into doubt really but that's not as such a issue as point b
b) Unfortunately 5 is a half product/generation gap much like 1 is even though they had half a year more to develop it. It is based off a XZ4 footprint but they messed up the video capture by shoving OIS on it and very apparently existing EIS just can't work with it no matter how much they tweak the firmware. Previous Xperia management has focused on video and now new guys want to go to still photography instead, hence why both 1 and 5 got OIS to be competitive in low light photo. Well I do shoot more video than stills and 1 was very good in video until you start to move in every mode except 1080/30. Unfortunately they couldn't fix that in 5 either so now I'm waiting to see if they have finally solved it by rewriting EIS or changing OIS supplier.

The only way you get better EIS for 4K is : Use SDR or keep HDR + gimbal
HDR requires more from the hardware, then EIS goes weaker than it is already.

As I always say, OIS is useless for video.

Yes, I agree 5II should have been announced because in october, 1 ii will be like $850-900.

Can't they turn OIS off for video?

On the other hand, it seems that others (like Samsung) do manage to get OIS and EIS working together properly, isn't it?

No, OIS for mobile is different.
You can only turn off EIS.

What can be done is to improve EIS, like other brands did.
Apple, Google, OnePlus, Samsung, Oppo, Huawei amd Xiaomi have better EIS than Sony.
And they did not have until end of 2016.

Even more crop helps too.

With COVID-19 affecting ALL major markets (both manufacturing of chips, chipsets, and smartphones/tablets/computers and for sales), how would you figure that Sony ... or any other competitor ... would be best suited to launch not 1 but 3 smartphones at the same time for sales?

1. It's not just the elderly that's getting infected or sick ... the youth are as well and there is no cure, COVID-19 leaves permanent lung damage! People are more cocerned of their health and supplies with immenent provisional/states going into a FULL lock down! USA, Italy and Spain after China are heavily hit, and it's spreading: trade and livestock and your way of life. Everyones!

2. Sales will be heavily hit, this affects Sony's restructuring - and the reason for that consolidation - yet will impact their share price. Should ALL 3 models fail in reaching their sales numbers (which factoring in not just profits and revenue or marketshare, yet replenishes their R&D which is consolidated now as of April 1st).

3. Sony's smartphones do not sell in as many markets as it used to 2yrs ago: Australia, Brazil, Panama, Canada (1 carrier not 4 anymore) no longer are on their radar, the USA is but a squint in their vision.

we ALL hope for a gusto launch by Sony yet we need to think of Sony as a business as well as fans ... Sony is not going to be foolish this year. There is a BIG reason why the Xperia 1 mk 2 is featuring not only Pro software and ability to record video in stereo audio and in RAW format, as well as the Xperia Pro having a dedicated button plus HDMI in for Professional camera's and sports venue video recording & streaming over 5G! Their aiming beyond Pro-Sumer market where $$ is not an object.
