i'm thinking single camera with 48mp sensor will give them a lot of advantages when it comes to post processing by the AUBE. sure you can't do optical zoom or ultra wide angle, but generally sony lenses are pretty wide angle to begin with. optical zoom could be useful if they can do it, but they can do that with one camera, not three. i say save the space in the phone and add back the headphone jack and a bigger battery. those are much more useful and practical than 2 additional cameras which you may or may not use 90% of the time.

Stubbornness and being so so late to change. Its not possible to be the innovator all the time and sometimes you do need to copy or use others as inspiration. The moment the S7 Edge came out it Sony should have been looking to shrink bezels whether that uses a notch or curved edge. Since Sony hands out its sensors they should have really produced the best images from day one. Also, why ditch the headphone jack with the intention to get people buying Sony headphones when people don't even buy Xperia, doesn't that dramatically cut sales? Its a mess, a friend told me that the lay off of so many people recently has not gone down well:

'They could come under lots of pressure to produce magic with not so much budget'
'They could be slowly shutting down - Sony could never admit it publicly though'
'The new boss better know what he is doing because they are only a year away from being HTC'

Sadness and uncertainty, the 'XZ4' looks promising based on the renders but lets see what happens.

The worst part is that there is now a heavy onslaught of Chinese OEMs, who are have now caught up to the likes of Samsung in hardware.

I said it some years ago that when the Chinese OEMs get hardware and UX right everyone will be in trouble and now it is happening.

Manufacturers like Sony may be sitting on borrowed time at this point globally, I expect them to shrink and get to a point where they serve limited markets e.g. Their home market of Japan and wherever else they may still be relevant.

Even Samsung are feeling the heat at this point. It's going to be a bit of a bloodbath and we consumers win at the end as it will drive the crazy pricing down.

Headphone jack only occupies a negligible amount of space in a smartphone
Idk why manufacturers remove it

The only plausible explanation is that they want to milk their customers as much as they can

People kept misleading the AUBE image signal processor as a replacement to BIONZ. AUBE is designed as a fusion ISP, which as the name suggests, used to fuse data from two sensors together.

You can't use AUBE for a single camera. That's why XZ3 still doesn't use it, it's not because they wanted the ISP to be exclusive to XZ2P, but it only has one rear camera. So additional camera(s) are a must for now, that's one of many selling points for phones right now that Sony phones are missing, besides adding some additional features.

Plus, headphone jack only uses a little amount of space. Multi-camera setup doesn't really affect it. Just look at Galaxy A9. It still has headphone jack and a reasonable battery capacity.

Not necessarily true that aube can't be used on single camera. Sony's sensor can capture 960fps at 1080p. Theoretically all they would need is 100 frames at a higher resolution from the single camera at different exposures and the aube could merge those to create the perfect photo. There's no requirement as far as I know that there be two cameras to merge the images from.

So single camera, lots of frames, merged by aube then processed further by bionz.. picture perfection. Not sure why they can't do that yet. That's essentially what Google does.

Nope. AUBE is combining a color and mono. Mono is used for noise deletion. Lot of image processing require an mono pic for analysis the picture.

Yes. U still can stack up pictures for enlarging the noise signal then delete those. But, the best will still be colored + mono. Remember that there is no AUBE in others flagship.

Oh I get your point now but they wouldn't need aube to do that, they could just do what huawei and pixel did with their newest phones, the night mode (especially on Pixel 3) is amazing.

It'll be more amazing if sony utilises the same thing, with an addition of aube to fuse mono and rgb photos or just remove the monochrome camera and add telephoto + ultra wide angle.

i know aube is designed to merge monochrome and color in xz2p, but there's nothing as far as i know, that requires it to be monochrome and color, right? aube seems to be engineered for merging photos, so why not keep it and put it to use as a dedicated merging processor.

sony can do what google does. even google has their own processing chip to do all their merging and processing. so why not do the same thing? Aube as the merging processor and bionz to clean it up. just saying, it is possible and sony should "copy" this technique to improve their mobile imaging. they have the sensor superiority. their lenses could be.. improved. but their biggest failing is the inability to improve on their software processing to take full advantage of their sensors.

I don't really know how AUBE works. However, in image processing, mono signal is for noise detection. Many of those post processing need mono signal. I won't say color photo won't work.

SONY rarely directly copy others. Even if they does. They will do it with their own things.

This is how Google work: https://www.google.com/amp/s/[....]-release-history-14553723/amp/

So, it is just another version of Samsung.

Samsung?

HDR+ was pioneered by Google, night sight was from Huawei and motion and shake detecion was from Sony. Where does Samsung fit?

AUBE also gathers luminance data and aligns photos in real time. All Sony needs now is to process those images so that light sources won't blow up at high ISOs.
