Here is from my personal perspective:
I would say the decision to make a curve in 2018 Xperia was a great choice and its unique. For example, if you say like flatten the current XZ2P and a hump for its dual camera, the thickness still the same as the curve, there is no way around it. But from the eye, its much easier to accept than curve back. But ofcourse ppl will say why not make it thicker to cover the hump , why not make it flush to the phone, Sony gone the Chinese/Apple way of camera, and so on...

I don't agree, when people said "no camera hump" they wanted that space to be filled with battery or something actually useful. What Sony did is to fill it with glass and air.
A camera hump would have been acceptable, or at least if the thickess actually came with some legit reason. Comfort in hand is not enough to justify "no hadphone jack" "no bigger battery" "no ois" nothing. How can Sony think they can move forward this way. Even with the current design if the curve got to ~9 mm with a camera hump it wouldn't have looked as disastrous as it looks now. Big, thick and heavy is not a combination people are asking, at least not for phones.
What I'm also curious about is that XZ Premium and XZ1 had a different internal design. Some said it took serious R&D but now they ditched it. Why? |

And then, if you go to the way of putting camera at its corner, like the old Xperias, then it would be slimmer but ofc you now having the bezel that everybody hating it. And then you will have 2 way to go: phone thicker or display bezel thicker instead
And there goes ppl who will rant and say why not OIS, muh features... to the camera , make it larger, etc...well you can see the camera already thick and its the 2nd largest sensor equipped on flagship device. Now multiply it by 2 and add 14 lens for it. And with OIS, few more milimeters and its thicker
And here comes the battery, ppl will say the phone already thick, why not putting more battery in it. Well the truth is yes you can put more battery, but only if your phone designs boxy and not a curve. Battery tech still not flexible enough to make a curve battery other than stacking multiple battery, and ofcourse putting to much will make it hot and gone like Note7
Sorry for my English, Im Asian

Well, Huawei have: big battery, 3 side mounted cameras - one of which has the largest sensor in the market, and yet it's still slim and has slim bezels.
Now, although I don't think the P20 Pro is a good device and wouldn't want to see Sony go in that direction, this at least proves that it's doable.

I'm Asian as well hahaha.
Isn't it because of ambient flow design make phone in the middle size like XZ2 unable to has dual camera ?
Another thing that I don't like about the curved back is it's impossible to move RGB-ir and Laser AF sensor to the side of the camera.

As Spek said once, it is easier to fit stuff when body is flat like Z3 or XZ.
We dont know if the LCD of XZ2p has same thickness of the P20. The volume DVS uses inside.
How the position of bottom.speaker changes the project..
Iphone 8+ is the heaviest phone of 2017. More than 200g too.
I did not know until last week. No tech site ever complained.
No gorilla glass and less than 2700mAh.
Xz2 is lighter than i8+ but attacked by all sites. |

What spektykles said makes sense, it is genuinely a problem to make that perfect device to please everyone because there will always be a compromise somewhere. A fat device for a fat camera sensor is alright and bezels for the excellent selfie camera is understandable. The XA2 Plus looks amazing because it uses the older sensor so they can make the bezels slim etc.
The problem I have is that these fat sensors are not justifying their presence, unless you get that wow factor like when the Nokia Pureview came out then maybe its best to go for 2 or 3 thin sensors if it means they can reduce bezels, thickness and size etc. There has to be something really great about the XZ2P for someone to get one over all the prettier and thinner flagships, to actually justify its shortcomings to the average Joe and not only Esato peeps.
Personally, the XZ2 camera is good enough for it to be considered to be flagship standard so rather than using a huge second sensor they should add a small one to tick the dual camera box and focus on making the thing slim, small and pretty. That will help sales way more than putting the XZ2P camera into the XZ3. Look at Huawei sales since MWC, yes there is a lot lacking in their phones but they are killing it because they make good looking devices that perform well in every aspect without excelling in anything in particular apart from the low light imaging. I'll say it again, the XZ2 Compact on paper is one of the best phones out there and should be so appealing to many people but its 'one ugly mother****er'. |

Regular chinese costumers will buy whatever Huawei, Oppo, Vivo , OnePlus and Xiaomi decide to push.
The Vivo X20 Plus UD , the first with screen FPS, does not even have usb C. Actually many from Vivo and Oppo don't..
One Plus charges $500 only because phone lacks stuff other flagships have.
Xiaomi still uses often SD625, no NFC nor usb C for Redmi devices.
Look at P20/P20 Pro.
CPU that is weaker than SD835, the GPU is centuries behind Adreno. It does not have the jack too.
Bluetooth is still 4.2, while SD630 that came few months before kirin 970 has BT5.0.
Camera takes great photos, but is ridiculous for videos. There is no EIS for 4K, the 4K@30 has 24Mbps bitrate while XZ2 has 54.
Front cam is lame. Worse among all flagships.
Honor 10 has kirin 970, cheaper screen than p20, cheaper camera etc... Price is close to $500.
The device is not better than OP5t or Mi6.
Even worse compared to S8+, XZP, V30, U11 and Pixel 2.
Probably H10, P20 and P20 together will probably pass 40 million units. |
