With Huawei now adding a 3rd camera to the rear of its smartphones does anyone know of total sensor size all 3 take up?
Reason why I'm asking is, would you rather prefer a dual/triple sensor layout or one really larger sensor maybe even 1" in size like the in the RX 100 lll. No idea if it would be possible but surely 3 sensors must take up a fair amount of space to the point where a 1" could be squeezed in.
EDIT - turns out Panasonic already done this back in 2014nwith a phone as tall and as wide as the XZ2 compact.

Triple sensor give many benefit than single big sensor.
I also doubt that SONY will make something like CM1...

Three SONY staff say that dual camera model will include OIS...
Now I wonder what would those who think EIS is enough will say....

XJ ....
P20P has : 1/1.73", 1/4.4" and 1/2.78"
1/1.73" + 1/4.4" + 1/2.78" = X
I dont know the X, but I bet 1" > X.
I would rather see one sensor ( 23MP , 1.6 micron is enough) with ability to select focal length.
Make it work between 24 - 70mm.
I appreciate if you or Spek could suggest that.
If you are asking about this, does this mean they plan a 1" sensor like Nodar said?
Arch, check the link I posted 2 days ago. It is XZ2 x Mate 10 .
From Wit Rigs. See the part he is riding his bike to test stabilization.
Mate 10 has OIS.
And with that high ISO, OIS is even less necessary. Photos can be great without slow shutter.

The main 40MP sensor "IMX-600" based on the old 1/1.7" IMX144, the sensor is 40MP with quad bayer that outputs in 2x2 binned arrays. each pixels in the arrays have mixed exposure values to maximise dynamic range.
it's named IMX600 and is the pet project between Huawei Finland/Japan R&D center and Sony Semicon. they also hired the old pureview team in Finland.
iirc it's also the first time a IMX-X00 sensor been used on a non sony device. And the man behind Nokia's PureView, Eero Salmelin, also worked on the sensor.
and all I can say is the Sony dual camera will have 2 different aperture

Very interesting and informative, thanks spektykles .
While im temporarily using a Xiaomi redmi 5 plus which has near replaced my z5 premium, I can't wait till September or so to get a new Sony phone . Much appreciated
Hoping for better battery life camera and features compared z5p and newer gens.
Edit: just a reminder I still miss the days of xenon and plasma flash.
Glad to see the new sensors / lenses and added c or s-ram?(that ram for slomo) bring improved seems like a better jump in camera tech this year.
Re-edit
Also spektykles or anyone can answer or guess this.
Since the Huawei p20pro is pretty impressive same as the pixel s9+ etc etc
Do we believe since the development of this new dual sensor camera with Huawei rnd Sony semicon and old pureview team AND (the point I'm getting to) Qualcomm - helping Sony out for xz2 series will be better then the Huawei and all above phones?
In other words
With the Qualcomm and Sony partnership to better inbed?(can't remember exactly and how Qualcomm helped lol) sensor in xz2 series
And also the joint venture of Huawei and Sony for a better dual / trilogy cam
Will the xz2 premium be the phone to pump up the next wave on sensors and push comp?
Thank you I've again

@XperiaJunkie
Total sensor area is around 2.8 inches square in P20P, while a 1" sensor has 2.4.
(Based on Moe's numbers and my questionable math skills)
A single big sensor's biggest problem would be thickness. A thinner triple camera is more suitable for everyday phones.
@DarkKrypt
Afaik, Sony helped with the ISP in the SD845. This collab's fruits can be seen on Gsmarena's samples comparing XZ1 and 2's outputs with the same settings. Dual cam has its own ISP (Fusion), idk if there's any help Sony got from Qualcomm for that one. |

So would you say they plan to use the IMX600 in the next Sony flagship, or any other sensor? |

Sony has a patent of a sensor with built-in lenses.
It is very very thin.
But I dont know size of the sensor.
Bigger sensor/hi res has all advantages.
But if Sony could bring to phones the ability to select focal length this would take things to extreme level.
Instead of 2 sensors, if you could have one bigger camera that switches from 24mm ( same used with imx300) to 70mm for example.
With 5x zoom.
Phones are already killing pocket cameras.
I have a Kodak ( model of 2008 I guess) 12MP.
It cant do better than phones. |

^that's cause you have a kodak from 2008
10 years old and from kodak..
that being said, phone cameras are very good these days. in most cases, better than any compact camera less than $400. but they still have a ways to go to compete with high end compact cameras. phone cams more than enough for social media and 4x6 or even 8x10 prints with high resolution, which is what most need and want. that's why people don't really care for buying compacts anymore... in most cases.

Kodak C182 Easyshare It seems to have 1/2.3" sensor.
Very small for a pocket camera.
It explains why it cant outperform a cellphone.

Tried the S9 today, slo-mo is so much better to use because of the editing software so I really hope Sony do something similar. |
