Agree with tiff format and also png format and raw is nice.
With a quick google we also have
Bpg format
"And now, from the creator of FFMPEG and QEMU, Fabrice Bellard, we have BPG!

Short for Better Portable Graphics, BPG offers around the same image quality as JPEG, but at half the file size. To perform such witchcraft, BPG simply uses a newer codec — x265, the open-source implementation of HEVC/H.265. In essence, a BPG image is the same thing as taking a single frame out of an x265/H.265 video stream. We’ve talked about H.265 at length in the past, but basically it’s just a much better algorithm than JPEG — or MPEG-2 or H.264. Furthermore, BPG also has H.265’s ability to render 14 bits per color channel (JPEG is just , plus BPG also brings an alpha channel (transparency). Lossless compression is available (though I haven’t seen how it compares to PNG)."
Link: BPG article

Sony introduced h265 into z5 series - I think one of the first to do so correct me If I'm wrong - I remember not being able to upload to YouTube cause unknown codec error lol

There is flif format
"FLIF is a novel lossless image format which outperforms PNG, lossless WebP, lossless BPG, lossless JPEG2000, and lossless JPEG XR in terms of compression ratio.

According to the compression experiments we have performed [older results here], FLIF files are on average:

14% smaller than lossless WebP,
22% smaller than lossless BPG,
33% smaller than brute-force crushed PNG files (using ZopfliPNG),
43% smaller than typical PNG files,
46% smaller than optimized Adam7-interlaced PNG files,
53% smaller than lossless JPEG 2000 compression,
74% smaller than lossless JPEG XR compression.
Even if the best image format was picked out of PNG, JPEG 2000, WebP or BPG for a given image corpus, depending on the type of images (photograph, line art, 8 bit or higher bit depth, etc), then FLIF still beats that by 12% on a median corpus (or 19% on average, including 16-bit images which are not supported by WebP and BPG)."
flif main page

And heic format ~ apple adopted it.
"Platforms that support HEIC:

iOS 11 devices (iPhone 7 and later)
MacOS High Sierra (10.13)"

"What are HEIC and JPEG?
JPEG a term used for any graphic image file produced a JPEG format. JPEG is one of the image file formats supported on the World Wide Web, usually with the file suffix of ".jpg". When you create a JPEG or convert an image from another format to a JPEG, you are asked to specify the quality of image you want.

HEIC pronounced like heek, is the new image format used by Apple in the latest iOS 11 as the default photo format for iDevices. The image format according to Apple will take 50 percent less storage space than JPEG format of same photo without compromising the quality. When HEIF and JPEG in comparison, the less size is due to the compression techniques used by HEIF.

Its also 16bit vs jpegs 8bit

heic vs JPEG imyfone.com link

Food for thought.

Google translate
Aboliremo l algoritmo jpeg dai cellulari (ignore the hashtags -> #sony #Xperia !)
"We will abolish the jpeg algorithm from mobile phones"

So either change/upgrade the algorithm
Change the format: a JPEG alternative like the above
Or
Something else.

Jo, about the ISO.. Complicated history.

High ISO will ruin your pics if there is light around
But what if you are somewhere without artificial light? Like camping, road trips..
The Auto Superior is also made to give you ISO 12800 if necessary.

There are two options:

1) they can use ois , so there wont be need to keep faster shutter to prevent blur. But for video it cant work as good/fast as eis ( on smartphones at least). But if you need higher ISO you wont be able to use auto.

2) limit the ISO on auto ( maybe 250) and keep the 12800 option on manual. Older phones allowed you use 12800 only by SCN HIGH SENSIBILITY 8MP. Because settings give only 3200. Also you will need to go manual if you need high ISO

I think imx380 must be new too.
No phone has it already.
12MP 1/2.3" + 1.55 micron

It is like an updated version of the sensor used by Pixel 1, same specs..

But the sensor business is a major part of Sony's sales, so limiting their sensors only to their devices which might only sell a few million units, versus selling tens of millions sensors to a competitor, like samsung or even apple and rolling in the profits.

As for using any new image formats, anyone know what the licensing issues with those formats would be? If there are no licensing fees/costs then yes, but another issue is support by browsers and other places like google.

Anyways, I would love to see OIS in sony's rear for once, would be great. I am sure OIS and digital stabilization can co-exist and sony could turn on and off the digital one for video and turn off the OIS.

I would guess the tweet means sony will have a new jpeg algorithm or will be finally making RAW available?

OIS cant be turned off.
That is why other phones have issues with moving objects and jello effect ( videos).
Video stabilization of XA1 Ultra is better for rear than front.

Pretty sure you can, there are lenses on the market where you can turn off ois. Same for some cameras

ie
https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4102920

not sure if the ois works the same in smartphones as in other cams or lenses, if it works the same you can turn it off.

anyways, another device on fcc, PY7-72474U, seems the dimensions are in appendix A but I can't seem to access that. If anyone has methods to access it, please do so.

If we compare to the 5" phone certified days ago, this one seems bigger.
The tray is smaller compared to the body.

If they make 6" screen with high end specs but smaller than XA2 Ultra I am so buying..
