Any actual Pixel 2 XL owners here?
What's going on with the displays?

I have one in it's box next to me but it's not mine.. my brother's.. 
UPDATE:
he states there is definitely a noticeable blue tint at off center angles and there is a grainy texture to solid background colors. he may try to RMA and see if he'll get a better one as it seems the amount of tint/grain varies.

Ouch! That sucks.
Google should have gone with Samsung for the displays, although I do believe Samsung's stock of OLEDs was bought up by Apple for the iPhone X, so I guess that would have made it difficult to get stock of the Pixel 2 XL.
Hopefully Google can eventually sort this out. The Display is the primary way of interacting with the Device, if that is of poor quality then the whole experience is ruined.

What a disaster it has been for pixel 2 xl. The screen is Ultra crap. Such a shame for such a great product. Ultra crappy screen totally ruined otherwise this great product. LG's OLED sucks. Not a great start for LG's P-OLED display.
Nevertheless, I'm still have High hope for 2019 Pixel. 2 year is a long time in tech world and starting from 2018 both LG and samsung are rumored to use the same oled material for their oled display. If LG still can't fixed their problem google should just dump lg and go for JDI. |

I could forgive them if the Pixel XL. 2 was not so expensive . But as it stands they have no excuse . I hope that next batches will get better screens |

I guess it will be Pixel 3 when Google nails it once they start to build phones themselves with the people they took from HTC. This outsourcing kinda thing isn't working out well for them. Especially when they charge a premium. Pixel was the answer to all the SW problems Android has and so fa all their phones have been marred with HW issues.

for those interesting in pixel 2 XL, there may be some hope. there are reports on reddit that people who have submitted for an RMA to exchange their phone for a new one are receiving devices that fair much better than their original. i.e., the screen does not have the viewing angle issues and the grainy/dirty texture is no longer there.
Of course, it's a big YMMV.
I also got a chance to check it out in person yesterday. Looking at it, the colors are definitely more muted, even compared to my XZP. So, next to a Samsung, it would probably look like the most drab colors ever. As far as the viewing angle blue tint is concerned, it definitely turns blue but it's actually not that bad as people are making it out to be. If it were me, I could live with it. The grainy texture is there, but only on lowest brightness and makes it look more like a fabric texture than solid color. my brother's new phone should be here today or tomorrow.. so we'll see if the new one still has issues or not. Also, he's been using it constantly for 5 days and no burn in as far as he can tell.

Verdict:
Microsoft Lumia 950 XL Wins !!!
I'll get some grief in the comments, no doubt, but this is a comfortable win for the Lumia 950 XL (Whatever DxOMark says).
Again, it's the combination of Mature Image Processing, Professional ZEISS Optics, 5th Generation OIS, PureView OverSampling, Triple LED Flash (True Tone), it all adds up.
The Pixel 2 XL wins for speed, of course, focussing more accurately and in an instant, plus post-processing on each shot is only a second or so, versus about eight seconds on the older Lumia 950 XL, with a far older and slower chipset.
What I'm testing here is the ability of each phone to make accurate photographic memories - quality images that you can crop from, print and manipulate, with as little noise and artefacts as possible. |
