Anyone here still think Sony should continue using big bazel design and crappy image processing ?

If SONY continues to stick to their current philosophy, they will lose Japan in the next 2 to 3 years. High time they cater to the mass market. Good cam, OLED display & chopping those decade old bezel itself will get them on track.

I think we can safely say that Sony will be launching a new design next year to keep up with the current design trends. It doesn't need some wow factor to stand out.

Sony’s new-generation smartphone will have an all-new design language, according to Sony’s India managing director Kenichiro Hibi.

Well, Sony's mobile boss said this also a few months back. Nevertheless it's good to see a high ranking sony exce shade some light to the matter.

It's also good to see that they are acknowledging the trend (the bazeless, 18:9 aspect ration). That is the right thing to do. IMHO, there are three main weakness in Sony mobile -

1. Design ( Good thing that we are going to see a new design here. The current omnibalance design is great, they only need to shade some bazels)

2. Camera ( Image processing lag behind the industry leader, iPhone, Galaxy, Pixel, U11). This is where I like to see the most dramatic improvement - better dynamic range, better texture preservation, better noise control, etc.

3. Marketing ( Well, we all know that Sony's not going to spend a lot on marketing so nothing to complain here)

Well, I disagree with ganjith that they need oled panels. If would be cool to have the oled screen but even out the oled screen best kind of LCD is still more than welcome.

New design, better camera, less bezel, better battery all are welcome changes... as long as they don't get rid of the 3.5mm jack

Just read the article it almost confirms the new naming scheme which Josephnero mentioned a while back from his source.

Would be front cam/ light sensor beneath screen? It looks 21:9 to me...
What about 2nd cam? What kind?
LG has super wide angle, Huawei and Lenovo use RGB + BW and Samsung/Apple use narrow angle + optical zoom

Its best they go for OLEDs. Samsung has build a reputation of having beautiful screens over the years with the OLED and the mass market is aware of that too. Now with Apple going the same route its best SONY does it too..they are investing for the same in the TVs anyway. Doesn't make sense them marketing TVs that have the best tech in OLED and their phones have yesterdays tech in LCD.

Lets say SONY makes a cracker of a phone thats beautiful, blazing fast and clicks gorgeous pics but has a LCD. Do you really think the iPhone & Galaxy folks will ditch their OLED screens for this? Nope. Better to be safe than sorry.

Like I said..its high time they cater to the mass market. The 3 key points being 1. Design 2. Screen 3. Cam

^^^

I can see a small blue rectangular ( with rounded corner ) at the top of the screen, but it doesn't seem to be centered, it looks like an awkward part of the wallpaper.

it's neither 21:9 or 18:9, I put it in photoshop, it's like 19.5:9

2nd cam, dude it's a concept not a leaked render even thought the translation indicates the render is based on some insiders..

Nothing but a fan made concept and a link to Nodar's website to keep his hitrate up.

So we are sure that next year we will see a new design with smaller frames. The question is about the aspect ratio of the screen: 16: 9 or ~ 18: 9? I doubt
they will go to 21: 9 - the phone would be too high and narrow.

By the way, does anyone produce screens ~ 18: 9 with diagonal below 5 "?

It would be best if they can manage to get themself the best oled panel otherwise it would be best to use the best of LCD. As we all know only samsung can make the best oled for mobile display and they wouldn't share with anyone unless you drop them billions of dollar like apple did. We all know sony mobile don't have that kind of cash so there is no chance of getting the latest and greatest oled from samsung. Samsung gives third class oled to other manufacturers - just see the quality of oneplus oled. LG's oled is atleast a generation behind samsung and I don't expect their oled to catch up with samsung for atleast for a year. JDI not going to mass produce oled screen until 2019. So Sony mobile has only two option -

1. Use second or third class oled
2. Use the latest lcd tech that may not be able to compete with the best of oled but will be an excellent display in their own right.

It's obvious that the 2nd option is the best option. Even Apple is considering to going back to JDI's for the advanced LCD panels for some future iPhone models. Apple wouldn't have done it if they didn't see any value to this tech.
https://www.phonearena.com/ne[....]e-future-iPhone-models_id98437

Let's say sony choose to use 2nd/3rd class oled from samsung. There will be still problem. Samsung has history of not supplying sufficient oled panel to their customer when they see the phone are selling well. They did this to HTC and NOKIA. So what guarantee is there they will not do this again to Sony. LG is still struggling with their supply with oled.

All things consider Using the latest advance quality lcd is not a bad decision. Maybe it is a deal breaker for you not to have oled screen in flagship phones but I think most people will be fine with the best quality of lcd. My still stand by my comment. If they want to be successful the need to improve in three key areas

1. Design 2. Camera 3. Marketing.

Guys, aren't we discussing '18 related things? I think it would be safe to consider opening '18 thread since pretty much everything in relations to this year is done.
