^you're taking the argument somewhere else. i was just responding to your claim that insinuated how nokia's digital zooming is better. my point was about image quality, not the other issues you are now raising.

Have you looked into satellite imaging and what kind of zoom is used for that type of application ? Think about how big the lenses and the hydraulics required for optical zooming and moving them would be.. and the levels of distortion at the far end of the zoom range ? No way.
They use HUGE sensors and crop into the images, which is where Nokia "stole" the idea for the 808/1020 system.

do you realize we're talking about smartphones? can't blame you... you're a huge fan of 1020 and 808.

well, if you'd like to do it that way, let me play along. so you think those gigantic telescopes used in astronomy rely on digital instead of optical zooming? if the goal is to go into the extremes of achieving clarity and great detail, optical zooming will always be better.

just look at all the zooming comparisons between 1020 and devices with optical zooming online. if you have issues about the borders blurring away, they can be easily cropped out. it's just optical zooming achieves a farther reach and better image quality. i already posted a link to prove this point. i hope you can also link me to something that shows 1020 being able to capture greater details and better zooming.

if you're really concerned about the deteriorating quality at the far end of the zooming range, you always have the option not to go that far. still, without going as high as 9x or 10x zooming, you can still get better and clearer image magnification compared to what digital zooming can achieve.

you can't just preach about the practicality of stuffing all those zooming components in a device since the k zoom demonstrates how it's now possible to come up with a smartphone with real optical zooming without looking as stupid as the s4 zoom. k zoom is still bigger than 1020 but it proves its zooming superiority without the need for the excessively bulky body.

my contention that optical zooming will always be better than digital zooming is based on the extent of zooming, clarity and level of details of achieved.

I've never said that 808/1020 are better than optical zoom solutions when it comes to IQ. You stated that "optical zoom is always superior to digital zoom" and I thought that you meant in general, which is not true, which is why I mentioned the other cases where you might need zooming.

I touched on what the smartphone issues..

The K is better than the 1020/808 when it comes to zooming in terms of IQ, at least in most cases, but there are sacrifices which had to be made in terms of size, optics, and durability.

For anyone who wants a good android phone with a camera that has OIS + Xenon + Optical Zoom, this is the only option and a good choice with the manual settings for shutter and other things and long exposure times.

I don't know guys. Look's Galaxy S4 i9500 Octa with 13mp Exmor RS IMX135 sensor - the quality/detail is very good , par with old Nokia N8 But is real step forward as Android phones.

Good camera but S5 takes better pictures than that.

For me S5 it's a bit the same quality of the S4, bigger image for the S5 thus you see more closer details but also more flaws.

Better dynamic range for S5 and a bit better in low light.

Sassho I don't know if your trying to be funny or being serious but the S5 the same as the Pixon 12? I don't think so, I had the Pixon 12 if you look through my posts you will see pics I took with it. The S5 takes much better pictures.

You say the S4 is better than the N8 then say the S5 is the same as Pixon 12?

northmonkey - I joke...almost Pixon12 par with SGS5 - has same little grain image , but show more detail. I don't like SGS5 camera as detail. Look's nice shots from Xperia Z2 - nice as colors and sensor quality, but worse postprocess
