Well, well, well. I have been compllaining about Samsung's call quality and at some point I started to feel odd because people who have them seem to think otherwise. Phonearena just confirmed that I was right on their S5 review. That is exactly how I found the S4 to be in the call quality stakes, it sounded muffled. It seems Samsung can't get that right.

I have been using phones since the days of Ericsson and Nokia and I am in a pretty good position to know what good call quality is. Fortunately for me Blackberry still know that a phone has to be a phone first and then a smart device. I know Nokia still holds to the same high standards cause my brother's Lumia 925 is excellent in that area.

I'm always fussy with call quality but my Note 3 is a lot better at signal than the S4 was. Call clarity is loud and crisp though. It's funny how Nokia used to be great for signal but for some odd reason their Lumia phones often have poor reception. Pocketnow website also complained about S4 and S5 call quality but I found them to be fine. Sometimes manufacturers need to just get the basics right.

I agree, Bono, basics should be in place first. With Nokia you can be sure you get excellent call quality 90 percent of the time, obviously, the low end phones aren't given too much thought but they are more consistent in paying special attention to the call quality of their phones.

As for the reception of their phones, I tend to agree with you that things have changed drastically. I do think it has to do with phones being many things at once. Think of AV receiver versus stereo amplifiers, the stereo amps will almost always sound far better than receivers when it comes to music reproduction.

I am not hating on Samsung but my experiences with them have been rather poor, from signal reception to call quality. I am never, and I do mean never, buying another Samsung phone. I am probably going to go the Sony route should I decide to give Android another chance. Heck, I may even give Jolla a chance... if I can find their phones anywhere.

No actually Phonearena just offered their opinion based on the phone that they tested- it doesn't make it a fact that you were right that "Samsung can't get that right". I bet that I can find many other reviews that will confirm that the call quality on Samsung is good just as it is the reception. I certainly never had an issue and I had a lot of Samsung phones. And it's ironic that you are praising Nokia - I recently had Lumia 1020 and now I have 1520 and I can tell you that the reception is far from excellent

Engadget review

". Likewise, call quality on both my unlocked handset and my AT&T version sounded clear with no complaints on either end of the line."

http://www.engadget.com/2014/04/11/samsung-galaxy-s5-review/

Another review

"Callers we spoke to reported that the call quality from the Samsung Galaxy S5 was very good. We found calls were clear with plenty of volume through the ear speaker."

http://www.pocket-lint.com/review/128320-samsung-galaxy-s5-review

And another one ...etc

"The best I can say about them is that the S5 is loud enough that I didn't miss many calls,. Speaking of which, call quality was solid on AT&T's network, though the earpiece could definitely stand to be a bit louder."

Re-read my response to Bonovox's Nokia reception comment before you claim I have praised them on their reception. The only praise I afforded Nokia was in their call quality.

As for Samsung's call quality, I think it is poor based on my experience, I agree fully with the experiences of Phonearena. I haven't seen Bono's Pocket now complaint but clearly there are people who also think that those phones have poor call quality.

Until someone gets a superior phone in terms of call quality they won't be able to tell the difference. I have a far more superior phone in that regard and so I stand by my conclusion.

First of all no one is arguing your own experience with Samsung - if you are unhappy with it then fair enough.

However your experience with GS4 doesn't make it a fact that Samsung can't get it right. And second your opinion that
"Until someone gets a superior phone in terms of call quality they won't be able to tell the difference." makes you look a bit full of yourself. One like I said I have a Nokia phone at the moment (and I had a different Nokia model not long ago) and since you are praising Nokia for call quality shouldn't I be able to tell if Samsung has poor call quality?- I also have an iPhone 5s btw. Second I offered you 3 different links from reviewers websites - have they not tried various other phones including Blackberry?

So your own experience is just that - hardly a fact

I can't complain about Signal Strength or Call Quality on any of my Samsungs.
I had the S2, S3 and S4 and none of them have ever let me down. As I type this I've also been communicating with my younger brother who is at the Kruger National Park for holiday with family, he also has an S4, and he hasn't had much issue sending me pics and chatting, until they are deep in the park, then again I haven't been there in almost a decade now, but from what I remember signal got very poor there but his S4 seems to be holding up well.

I've got my mother's BB Q10 to compare my GS4 to, as well as her new iPhone5S, all 3 seem to have good call quality and signal strength, the iPhone though tends to be slower at switching between EDGE, HSDPA and LTE (when compared to Q10 in LTE), I can't say the difference is significant though.

You are just saying that because you don't have a phone with superior call quality to compare it to

@Tsepz_GP

Thank you for an adult and sensible response!

@aussieland

Lovely response, says quite a lot. Firstly, I experienced what was poor in terms of call quality and signal reception from the S4, the reception part was borne out of comparisons to the phones I have/had. That leads me to you attacking me personally, life or experiences are about comparing. If after owning a Mercedes I get a BMW and I am impressed what exactly is wrong with that?

I will definitely mention the what's good or better about BMW compared to the Benz.

As for reviewers having tested other phones, until they put those phones against the S4/S5 your point is moot. Let them start comparing the call quality against the different phones and then we can discuss the pros and cons.

Dups

I attacked only your statement that other peoples points are irrelevant as they haven't experienced a more superior phone. My post clearly states that I respect your experience with GS4. I suggest try and understand my post better before replying.

And plenty of people here that have tried various phones other than Samsung have said that Samsung has good call quality yet you continue to project your experience with GS4 on all Samsung phones. And what's worst you quote reviews that agree with you but call moot reviews that don't . So on that note I think it is pointless to continue this discussion any further especially in the GS5 thread which is a phone you obviously have absolutely no interest in

I agree that we should end this discussion because clearly we do not agree.

However, I never said that the reviewers who say the S5 has a good call quality are wrong, I said that there are other people who also share my sentiments that the call quality is not up to standard. I even made mention of Bonovox's comment that Pocket now also complained about the call quality of the said phones.

I think I pointed it out that I do subscribe to the fact as people we have different tastes (different strokes for different folks) and my experiences are different to others.

Anyway, let the discussion of the S5 continue as I am stopping the discussion on the call quality matter, I am sure other people are also tired of it.

Ok no worries and glad to hear you are enjoying your Blackberry. I would have liked Z30 but not without access to Play store

Anyway back on topic

http://www.t3.com/news/samsun[....]-2k-screen-launching-this-year

I wonder if a 2k version is coming or this is meant to be Note 4. It would be disappointing IMO to buy a GS5 only to have a superior version launched a few months later
