Samsung could of done anything they wanted with the S5 but instead decided to give it specs from 2013 and correct me if i'm wrong don't Samsung already have a S800 GS4 in certain regions around the world. It really puzzles me as to why they have held back the have known for a while now that the competition is catching them up and soon may even surpass them, maybe not in sales but as a new innovator and leader in mobile tech.

I think they all are. Theres literally nothing new about the phones announced from their 2013 counterparts.
Samsung are going more down the lifestyle route than raw specs, which is ok, but usually its nothing but gimmicks that people will never use.

Maybe they are waiting for snapdragon 805 and will release an upgraded s5 later in the year like they did with snapdragon 600. |

Probably, that was the rumour a few days ago.
We seem to entering an age of very small incremental updates to these phones. Theres very little progress going on where the hardware is concerned.
Samsung, HTC, Sony and the rest are all guilty of the same problem. The problem being, they're all too busy competing with each other that they're releasing new phones without there being any time for new hardware to be released.
I'm sure im not the only one here on Esato who would have liked to have seen the S5 and other phones like the Z2 released a little later in the year with more updated specs.
If I were to choose, I think I'd buy a Lumia 1020 at this point in time.

by that time though the Qualcomm S615 64BIT octacore CPU with the adreno 405 GPU which will walk all over the S805 and I would probably expect that chip to go into the Xperia Z2 Ultra or the Z3 and Galaxy Note 4 which will probably be announced at IFA this August.

I don't really follow the latest trends in fastest cpu's in phones, it means little to me as long as it can run my games and other apps and OS updates for the life of my contract.
But they've all rushed these phones out. They say the life of a phone is 8 months, but my phone contract is 24 months, so essentially if I get an S5, the S7 or S8 would be due out by the time its up for renewal in 2 years.
A silly example, but the market is getting silly now.

Good lord they really f***ed this one up, I mean the rumors already had me worried then they bring it out and it's even worse!!!
2GB RAM
2.5GHz S801 (I guess this is the S800AC) OR last years Exynos 5420
FullHD display
2800mAh battery
Totally disappointed, bring on the Note4, heck, I may even go for an iPhone at this point.
I was thinking Xperia Z2 then I remembered...16GB internal only
Actually, the Note 3 is even better than what I've seen at MWC so far. :/

Samsung should also use Lithum Polymer like in the G2 as the G2 battery life is brilliant

@etaab I completely agree with you my Z1 will easily handle any app or game that is thrown at it for another 18 months I would think and plan on keeping it for at least another year there is one thing with the pace of tech slowing down it will future proof our smartphones for longer

If they have reached a saturation point in term of specs for the time being, they could have used this opportunity to introduce a whole new design...which GALAXY really, really needs.

I didn't like the Xperia Z at all when it first came out, the Z1 fixed much of the issues I didn't like about the original.
But the Z2 is also disappointing for the same reasons as the S5. I wouldn't mind getting a Sony phone as im into getting a Playstation 4 in the coming months, so it would partner with it. But the same problems still worry me about Sony phones.
The S5 is a safe bet that it'll be very very good, a good performer all round - but safe is boring.
I might be off to Windows Phone this year..

I just thought of something, remember how Samsung changed the Galaxy S2 CPU spec after announcement? Could they do that with the S5? I'd love to get 3GB RAM in there at least!

Thats the thing, with Samsung you're guaranteed timely OS Updates, High functionality and so on, I'd find it hard to leave. Sony Z, Z1 and Ultra still waiting for 4.4, same with LG, great phones, but SW updates? G2 still no 4.4, and the Optimus G Pro1 has barely seen support after 4.2.2.
HTC are my final hope, I hope the ONE 2 is a beast.

Actually the CPU in the gs5 is snapdragon 801 just like in z2 so I am not sure why Samsung is getting so much flack. The snapdragon 805 is not yet available so 801 is the only option at the moment. The major dissapointment to me is the design- can they not change it?
The previous rumours were indicating premium version with 2k screen being released this year I reckon that one will have the snapdragon 805 and hopefully the new design. One thing is sure - hopefully samsung is going to price the gs5 reasonably -this is essentially last year hardware.
I like the fact that they changed the menu button into multi tasking button it make store sense. Also the indications are that tw is less cluttered that would be a nice change. All in all this won't make me give up my a note 3... |

Samsung has sold 200 mill Galaxy S handsets:http://www.sammobile.com/2014/02/24/samsung-sold-more-than-200-million-galaxy-s-handsets/
My guess is that the S5 will be a success just like the previous models The design is not for all, but that goes for any phone. If you don't like it, it simply was not made for you
