as for root, it is fairly easy to do, and it wont void your warranty, so i see no problem in that.

My z1 received the update this morning and I was hoping it would solve some problems with my phone, mainly the random shutdowns I have where I am using the phone and all of a sudden the battery level drops to 0% and it turns off. I can turn it on again but then it does 2 things, either it tries to boot and shuts down because of 0% battery or it goes into a boot loop with the xperia logo. The strange thing is, the battery is never discharged, and mainly occurs in the 70% of battery life, but can be higher or lower.

After upgrading to 5.0.2 I hoped this might be fixed but it seems it has not with a random shutdown today with 72% Shame. I am resetting the phone today to see if this fixes it, if not, then I will try somehow to get it fixed by Sony but knowing my luck, the problems will not be evident when I send it out to be repaired and sony will not fix anything.

So I will mist likely have to buy a new phone, probably either the G4 from LG or maybe wait for this Z3 plus but then I can't trust sony anymore.

edit, well looks like the reset did jack, and the problem still exists, this is messed up. It went from 83% to 0%, amazing. All I did was try to take 2 pictures. Maybe the battery is faulty.

Not sure what to do now, ask Sony to repair it, which might take weeks; leave it and wait for Z3+ or Z4 in fall, doubt I can use a phone that doesn't function after 2 photos; buy LG G4 or just go for a Z3.

Hey.. i just went through this and the battery is the culprit. i bought a new one and new adhesive strips to put it back together and now my z1 is like new. total cost was ~$50 USD with slow shipping from china. i suggest swapping out the battery but definitely get new adhesive strips for putting it back together.

5.1.1 downloading for my device now, still no update for my z3 dual which is a bit ridiculous. Sony sure has a great way of updating their devices.
