that sucks.
like, i love the design and the sony UI is the best out there... the camera seems nice too!
but why they couldn't use a better screen ? why?
Like what is their problem there in japan ? is this THE BEST OF SONY?? clearly not!!
as the best screen is found in the ULTRA, the Best audio is found in the walkman, the best camera in phones is in the z1, the best battery life is in the ZR.

that one sony is marketing bullshit. anyway i will probably end buying the z1, but i am frustrated with sony.
for me the lg g2, is the better device, (price:quality ratio...).
but i really love the sony design and the UI, AND hate the UI of LG..
so yeah here goes the perfect phone..

^screen is actually really great.

i have just taken pictures of my Z1 screen at straight on, 45 degrees and about 88 degrees (as far as i could go and still focus.. I'm too lazy to get my CF card reader, but when I do, i'll post them here..

the screen is actually pretty damn nice.. maybe next to the ZU, it doesn't seem like it? everything is relative

a lexus is pretty nice!.. until you stick it next to a lambo..

all kidding aside.. it's a shame that this is even an issue at all. sony should have MADE SURE that every Z1 screen is immaculate and perfect like the ZU, which garnered so much praise from everyone.

Here are my right focus test.

I can absolutely determine that this is a hardware issue. Even with the right of the frame focused, it's still a bit soft. With a third party app, like Camera MX, the effect is not as big, but still noticeable. Going to wait one more week, see if any new firmware will be out and pray for the impossible. Which is fixing a hardware issue with a software update..... Oh well, the pain of losing my Z1 is going to be great. Now deciding between a full refund or an exchange. Aaah, the choices.

@moogoo Good luck, hope you don't get a faulty unit like I did.

The only disadvantage with the screen are the viewing angles. It is still one of the best screen on the market minus the viewing angles.

At least know everybody can see that my source was right about the screen lottery.

@MNX - that sucks man. HOPE it's really not a HW issue. I need to test mine. I haven't taken a single photo yet! haha.. i should do that..

I updated my XPERIA PRIVILEGE app to 3.0. It indeed checks the SIM to determine if offers are available. Sounds like us americans will have to wait until the Z1 is offered in the US.. which will hopefully be next month some time along with the Canadians..

@ MNX1024

According to my source the team in Lund has a new package ready to go for the camera which makes the processing much better but they are being blocked by Japanese management at Sony's digital imaging.

There is no legal issues it is just and internal battle at Sony. As soon as Lund gets the approval from Japan the Camera update will be rolled out. Expect some leaked images withe the new software in the near future

why the hell is that?? why are they blocking them? it doesn't make any sense !!
as for the blur, it is really horrible, but when you focus at the right you still get much sharper right frame, so the lens can produce that sharpness, i think it is a software failure along with cheap wide lens (yeah even the carl ziess lenses on the nokia are cheap. wide lenses, specially cheap ones, tend to have soft corners, UNLESS you pay more than 600 euro for a wide lens.. then you will get the good ones with extremely sharp corners too.. so some softness is normal, but in the case of the z1, it seems like major software fail...

@Moogoo They don't check by SIM, probably by the location of IP address or something along the line of that. When I had my Xperia Privilege App installed, I didn't even have the my sim card in there. Was using wifi from my house.

@DACHA Thanks for the info. Do hope the firmware gets released within a week and possibly solve my issue. If not, Z1, back it goes. Just in case you didn't know, I'm having the same issue as GSMArena's right side blur on their camera samples.

The same again. The screen looks great in front of.

It changes under crazy angles but who cares? Really?
This idiocy is quite surprising.

its not idiocy, when you pay 700 euros! as much as the xperia z ultra, AND 100 euro more than the LG G2, you would except to get a screen as the same level with them or the HTC ONE or the IPHONE...

Its most likely the optics.. its very tricky to make such small wide lens sharp from end to end. It was the same exact thing with the N8.. you can remedy the situation with software, but it will never go away.

Depending on the manufacturing process Sony are using, this issue might vary greatly from phone to phone.. if they are adjusting the elements on each lens individually for greater precision (which is what Nokia does with the 808) they might be able to adjust their manufacturing..

Its all guess work for us.. but I am hoping that the number of units affected is low.
