^ That quality is pretty impressive.

Black seems like a great update. Fixes grain, noise, extra sharpness, and colours is much better too. Before the Black update 1020 felt like a stereo with treble set too high, so it produced harsh, too sharp, grainy and noisy images. Now it looks like they fixed that.

I am interested in a detailed comparison with 808. Although from what mlife posted, 808 still seems be a better cameraphone.

^ At this point its insignificantly better... and with the addition of RAW you can pretty much make the 1020 photos look just as good if you try hard enough.

The only significant thing is the xenon.. I still think that the 808 would produce a better image at the bar

mlife thanks for the pics man, looking great..

And ya, I know that the raw files are rather large..i was just wondering.. what about flickr ? Or maybe you can upload some on skydrive and let us tweak them ?

Also, if you are developing from RAW I think you should downsize to .. 7-9Mpix instead of 5.. it will still maintain good IQ with a nice bump in resolution.

Actually, this may be the 1st time I disagree with you but I don't think you would have to try "hard" at all.... the images are worlds apart from the original processing on the 1020

I seldom use the flash on my phone unless its to remote fire my other strobes via the SU4 function so this isn't that important to me... but for those who do use their phone in bars and clubs, I'm thinking the larger aperture and image stabilization would compensate for the slightly less potent xenon.

Signed up for a free BOX account... I have since edited the posts above, look for the "DNG" link below the "original" link.... let me know if that works....

the images above are the 5mp renderings straight from the 1020, no post has been done.... but I do agree, 8mp would be a better size choice.

I do agree with 90% of what you say here.. I must wonder however if the difference in "default" processing is more important than the raw/DNG ability of the 1020. I for one (as an owner of both devices) no longer need to compare the results side by side. I fully understand and accept that with the 808 having a larger sensor, the default images will remain better under close scrutiny... but the value of a 50mb raw file is HUGE in my book.

^ He would've been even more impressed if he wrote this article in 2012 when the D800 and the 808 came out almost at the same time. Both of them were far ahead of the completion in their respective markets.

And now it literally is sh*t.

@ mlife & cu015170 - its nice to see you guys warming to the 1020, I remember months ago you were both very critical of it to the point of disregarding it completely.

I saw the potential and its starting to live up to it. I still think they can get more from it. When Nokia designed the camera module for the 1020, they completely changed its design compared to the 808's module. But did they do that just to make the phone slimmer ? or because it is capable of more than the old design ? I'd probably go for the second option.

We all just assumed that because the sensor in the 1020 is not as large as the one in the 808, it would make worlds of difference. I still think the 1020 has the potential to beat the 808 given more time.

I didn't really disregard it completely but I also admit I wasn't going in with the most positive approach.... When I first heard about the 1020, I remember cu15170 and I having a conversation where we both agreed we weren't jumping on board due to us still having our AT&T basic phone plans which allowed for unlimited voice, text and data. on that plan with my corporate discount, I was only paying 60usd per month.... upgrading to a smart phone automatically puts you at about 100/month. At the time I didn't really care to switch just for the sake of switching. Then I got the "new tech fever" and just wanted to buy something/anything new and wound up with the 1020. I still maintain that if my 808 had a few apps updated and gave me manual control over the camera (I could even do without RAW), I would toss the 1020 back into the closet because I simply don't have a problem with symbian - as a matter of fact, I rather like it. Every time I use my 1020, I sorely miss my;
-timed profiles
-background images/wallpaper
-spare battery ability
-FM transmitter (my car doesn't have bluetooth or 3.5mm jack)
-Internet radio app
-send/end buttons
-HDMI out and USB host ability

.... so although I am "warming up" a bit, I most frequently use the 1020 just because of the camera app and raw ability and skydrive access - at all other times, the 808 is still pretty much my primary device (((but I'm trying)))... we'll see what the next few updates bring [addsig]

^ spot on

I wasn't happy with the jpeg processing on the 1020 before the black update, but its much better now. Its a nice smartphone overall..

8.1 should bring a lot of updates

-VPN
-Skydrive with integrated file browser (like on W8.1)
-sort apps by usage / install date…
-select multiple tiles
-better multitasking
-install apps on SD Card
-IE11 with WebGL and Normal mapping support
-separate volume control
-Bing smart search (same search as in W8.1)
-Xbox music and xbox video as standalone apps instead of the music+video hub (allowing more updates)
-Facebook and twitter integrated more deeply into the contacts HUB
-better camera app (the same one as W8.1)
-Quick settings (wifi, bluetooth..) by doing a quick swype from the up
-Notification Center accessed by doing a full swype from up to the bottom
-Ghosts notifications that go directly into the notification center
-Possibility to mark a tile as read by swyping it from the left
-“Cortana” smart agent doing the same things as Siri and Google Now and even more
- auto updates for apps

this is the rumored changelog
