As far as Symbian vs. WP.. each one has it's strengths and weaknesses. WP has a lot of potential but I think it will take another 24 months to get it up to speed.

I agree.... although I hope it doesn't take them 2yrs or by that time they'll find themselves in a very tough spot when trying to compete in the market and possibly even run the risk of being the next symbian

Symbian is very mature already.. it works perfectly well for me as a main smartphone. I don't think that I would use it on anything else but the 808 tho.

So true... And if it were not for so desperately wanting to use my skydrive account and have manual control over exposures, i would never have purchased a 1020. Having said that, I must admit I am warming-up/adjusting to the new platform pretty well. but I must agree, that if not on the 808, I would not have bought another symbian device if it was just some run of the mill 12mp phone... It being a 41mp over engineered piece of tech ahead of its time, I just can't totally dismiss it quite yet.

..... The 1020 sometimes gets lucky with it's processing of colors....

^ that's beautiful.. very nice. Just imagine what it will be able to do with the Black update, or if you had time to play around with a RAW file.. tons of potential in this one

As far as the 808,.. very few people appreciate what this device really is.. it was groundbreaking, and still is Glad I am not the only one who sees it that way

As for WP.. I don't think that there is a possibility of it going the Symbian way for two reasons.

First, its backed by the biggest software company in the world, not a hardware OEM that excels in engineering That means that there will be proper support for it and it will develop nicely. The hard work is done, it needed a little push to get traction, and Nokia gave it just that.

Second,.. the other two OSs are going to hit a threshold in terms of development. There is only that much you can do with the current gen UX, so they are not going anywhere Yes, apple can add widgets to iOS, google can add tile like experience to andro.. but still.. there won't be any significant developments.

If you really think about both iOS and andro are still based on a UX concept from the 80s.. using icons, sub menus, folders, etc.

I just noticed too that the EXIF data is wrong for every 1020 image I shoot as it reports the aperture as f/22 and not f/2.2 which is no big deal but more of an oversight probably. Either way, I hope they fixed that in the black update for the 1020.

These are shot with the black update

I don't quite understand how these can be RAW since they are all 5mpix shots, but nevertheless .. I like the colors

Its no mystery.. look at the EXIF.. these were processed in Aperture. Makes rme really doubt this persons credibility if they are posting processed images as "samples" from the black update. [addsig]

I looked at more 1520 photos today... it really seems like Nokia finally got the hang of the jpeg processing in Windows Phone.. it took a while, but they are back Some of the pics really look like they were taken with a Symbian based phone, I am really looking forward to see what all of that does for the 1020. I expect really great results.

Wouldn't buy from them, unless it's really, very cheap, £402 still is serious money, imo.
They have their headquarter in Hongkong, so the phone might be from there, as they usually are cheaper. Asian phones have no warranty in Europe, which is why Valuebasket provide their own, but I'd prefer warranty from the manufacturer.

What amazes me with the 1020 is the depth of field. it appears very quickly even for a few meters away from the subject (less than one meter and more) while with most other phones we get the depth of field almost exclusively in macro. Therefore sometimes it produce some blurry areas in the photos but it's more an auto focus story. This is a bit confusing because sometimes people think get all of the scene sharp (in focus) but it is not always the case.

I also noticed when i using the infinite mode for a distant landscape the entire scene is in focus (it makes sense), with the auto focus on sometimes the same scene have a very slight blur on the top right of the photo. Apparently this is not always a hardware issue.

It would be nice to have a multi points auto focus option.

@ Bono, I ordered mine from valuebasket ... I don't have the charger EU plug! mine seems to be a austalian/new zealand model but works perfectly in Belgium. I had the pack 1020+ camera grip however i have ordered the phone only!

Nokia Lumia 1020 small review

Mind I compared lots of features to my actual phone, the Pureview 808.

Physical aspects:
*Very well built, sturdy and loved the grip in hand
*a little bit too big for my taste, prefer the Lumia 720 size better.
*Nice colours to choose from
*Very good loudspeaker placement and the sound quality from it.
*Wish it had a MicroSD memory slot
*Battery is not user replaceable and not really that big (2,000mah) which means it wont last a full day (when used on a 4G network). When I was taking pictures non stop, only lasted few hours (3-4 hours).

Operating System:
*I can only say bad things here: no multitask, no sound profiles, no rotation screenlock, no notifications. Bunch of other NO's.
*Sometimes is slow when switching apps.
*When in an app (example Iexplorer) pressing the back button doesnt take you back to the main menu, as it is understood as back in browser, sometimes there is nowhere to go back to and stays in a white screen
*No File manager or access to the file system. This means apps like whatsapp cannot access the videos and must be recorded within the app, which means lower bitrate.
*No USB OTG support
*No HDMI support (through MHL-USB)
*App support not on par of Android or iOS.
*Did I mention the Spinning wheels issue when performing a full reset?

Camera:
*Very good but nowhere near the 808 specially in daylight.
*Colours are a bit saturated.
*OIS is very useful
*Night shots are hit and miss: sometimes very good, sometimes blurred.
*Camera Pro app is slow (4 seconds between photos, even when set to 5MP only) and not too intuitive.
