I downloaded those shots yesterday. Don't particularly like those tiny details like tree bark, grass, some leaves. These parts look like oil paintings and Nokia N95/N82 took similar photos, didn't like them either.

And we don't need to go to 100% magnification to see that

To add my opinion to current topics of discussion:

1. High megapixel Xperia cameras aren't as good as they ought to be. They are noisy and poorly post processed and the megapixels thing is a spec sheet thing not a tangible positive effect thing. I don't expect Xperia Z to break this trend.

2. HDR is not a fad, it's actually quite cool if used correctly, it doesn't need to be used for about 60% of situations. HDR video is double cool and useful. +1 Xperia Z.

3. The low-light performance is a step forward and almost makes up for not having xenon flash.

4. Screen viewing angles are important. I don't view my phone at 85º from perpendicular, I don't want people to see what I'm doing on my phone BUT better viewing angles make the screen look better even when viewing directly. Colours reproduce better and contract is higher when a screen has better viewing angles when the screen is just a few degrees of perpendicular. 'Amazing' viewing angles is very important for a high-end phone. Saying all that I don't expect the screens to get worse by iteration and the TX phone's screen is good enough, better is like a camera phone with more than 5MP cam, diminishing returns. I'm yet to see Xperia Z's screen in person so can't pass judgement, neither cn very few people in here.

5. Thin phones are nice. My personal preference for 'too thin' isn't achievable by current tech. +1 Xperia Z.

I do agree with the watercolor effect, but the colors seems dead-on and warm ^^. And actually it performs better than all the Xperia cameras I see. Hope Sony change the watercolor effect!

Any phone camera pics except N8 and Pureview 808 will look like oil paintings. Galaxy S3, Xperia V, Iphone 5, Lumia 920 all show similar oil paintings at 100%. So don't criticize the Z for something that just doesn't make much sense.

Sony never said Z is a Pureview 808 rival. It's a modern slim smartphone and for its category it performs better than the rest. With way less noise. You want more sharpness? Just alter sharpness in Photoshop.

In my opinion - Great Low Light performance + Ultra Low Noise + Accurate colors + no chroma noise + good details = WIN.

Look at this 100% photo crop of Lumia 920 with updated firmware. Will anyone pick this noisy crap over noiseless smooth photos of the Z ?

We can't judge photos without knowledge about settings. So it's pointless now.

I've read tons of sh..t about all the Xperia cameras I've had like S, T, Arc, X10. Including total bashing, and overhype.

Yet my own life xperience is veeeery far from most of the claims and many reviews. Including "specialists" here and some sites which make things worse on purpose (Eldar....). Including strange camera test of T on GsmArena.... And my own photos are much better proof for me.

And I still think viewing angles topic is total bull...hit.
It's just a hype created by idiotic reviewers, otherwise nobody would ever think about it.

And no viewing angles don't influence frontal look, that's idiocy too.

randomuser, you are not 100% right. Sony went too far with noise reduction, for some it's ok, for others, like me, it;s not. But for final judgement, lets wait for SGSIV or some comparison shots with other exmor RS cameraphones.

Can you just tell me which phone do you think you are impressed with ? You can see the Lumia 920 100% crop I posted, if you want Ill Post IP5, GS3 100% crop oil paintings too

I am not saying you are wrong but fact is, as of now nothing better can be achieved with tiny sensors. Only N8 and Pureview 808 are exceptions due to large sensors.

See here IP5 100% crop oil painting.

@doministry

Couldn't agree more. I don't know why Xperia phones get so much shit like this about noise and viewing angles and what not

randomuser, I like SGSIII shots more, they don't look artificial to me, like those from Xperia Z, don't blame me for not liking Sony's approach. But for final judgement, I will wait till sb makes comparison shots with SGS4:) Maybe Exmor RS is more sensitive to noise and need more NR? Lumia 920? Crappy camera, crappy os. My ideal phone would be a 4,7-5" 10-11mm thick 3500maH battery with 8MP camera and ~1/2.X sensor size.

And I complain about ISO 40 shots, so use iso 50 shots from other cameraphones!

But it's just a phone, maybe I expected wonders from that Exmor RS stuff, but sensors are getting smaller and smaller and that RS merely compensates for cramming more and more detectors into smaller area?:)

In every phone, some will start see any negative thing and start complaining about it, even if the phone was a superior phone...

It's a fact, the smaller the sensor is, higher noise you will have.. in mobile phones you're limited to small sensors only... as larger sensors will require larger focal length which means larger phones or some optical mechanical lens + it's latency problems and huge size and battery problems...

the PureView solution is also hard, as the sensor is huge and has 41MPixel resolution and over sampling the image to have clear picture, the real resolution will be shown when using the maximum zoom... or the having a real 38/36MP resolution picture...

the size of the sensor forced Nokia to have a larger focal length, this is why the phone is 13.9mm in depth...

I guess Xperia Z has an over sampling feature when you enable Superior Auto the phone will take a full 13MP picture then over-sample it to lower resolution... that's why when Superior Auto mode is on you can't select 13MP as a resolution...

Sony releases Z kernel source prior to worldwide device launch

One of the most highly-anticipated devices debuted at CES 2013 is the Sony Xperia Z. With a 5″ 1080p screen with a ~441 ppi, sitting atop a quad-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm S4 Pro with 2 gigs RAM and a 13.1 MP camera, there’s no doubt that anticipation is warranted. With the device recently released in Japan, and a worldwide release date is speculated to be in the next few weeks, what is this? Kernel source already?

This year, Sony Mobile has already demonstrated with their commitment to supporting the open source developer community. The most recent previous example is their kernel source code release for their alpha Jelly Bean build for the Xperia T (massive GPL-compliance anyone?). Now, they’ve released the kernel source code for the Xperia Z, which hasn’t even gone on sale around the world yet.
