Buying a G705 after having an iPhone for 10 months, the small screen makes the SE feel like a toy; very disappointed.

When I first saw the iPhone I thought it was huge but now I'm used to it's size and weight, it feels substanial, solid and stylish.

Simple answer ... is POWER requirements; aka battery life.

Our phones (smartphones & feature phones alike) demand more battery power for what they can offer.
What they offer and what users are using more of:
Camera - much more powerful camera hardware and software for quality pictures, VGA/30fps video recording
TouchScreens offering capacitive touch & multi-touch are huge battery hogs; only for now.
[note: capacitive should offer more frugal battery consumption than equal sized resistive screen]
Higher end dual-cpu (not dual-core folks; not until Cortex A9 in OMAP4340 gets used) running over 550Mhz and with hardware video acceleration (now the standard for future Symbian^2 OS devices and already used in iPhone 3GS, Palm Pre, and Nokia N95 but a lower cpu cycled cpu.)
Need to execute multiple processes per second and more than one instruction at a time for background processes.

IT all comes down to power consumption and how much power can be stored for said devices and their design configurations. In less than 12mths you'll see versions of next gen iPhones, successor to Palm Pre (not the Pixi), HTC TouchHDv2 or such devices get much thinner; with new battery charging, and battery technologies emerging or advancing existing Li-Polymer tech.

never had a thing for large phones. one of the reasons why my current handset is a T700.

if ever i have a need for a larger screen i bring along my netbook (Eee PC 900HA) with me... but that's another story.

Large screen on a phone is great, especially when it comes to internet browsing and videos... But for my taste, the G900 I'm using atm is suiting my needs perfectly...
