It's easy to forget that the iPhone has actually changed considerably during the couple of years it's existed, which partly explains some of the changing attitudes towards it. I "bashed" the original iPhone mostly because it was being touted as a powerful smartphone, and challenger to Windows Mobile and Symbian etc, when in reality it was a completely closed OS - essentially a featurephone, only without even Java support to enliven it. It's hard to believe now that for the first year of its existence, there was literally no official way to install any form of additional app or software - it had the features and functions that Apple announced early in 2007, and that was that, unless you risked jailbreaking (and it was a while before even that was possible, or particularly easy to do).

It was the announcement of the Appstore early last year that changed everything. That's the point where the iPhone matured, when it combined that nice UI and glossiness with some proper smartphone smarts. I've no regrets over passing on the original iPhone, but I'm still very glad I picked up the 3G last year.

Sounds like something taken from The Invasion.
I agree with you. An iPod with a phone was my standard argument against the iPhone - until I tried it myself. Now a proud owner of an 3GS 32 GB

Maybe we should convince laffen to add an iPhone avatar...?

The first two incarnations were not worth touching with a 50ft bargepole, the 3G S is well worth a look though, as is a 3G with the new FW on

The 3G was the best smartphone on the market when it came out, and is second only to the 3G S now, IMHO. It's just gotten better with age.

Just wondering if anyone has used a dual sim with either the 3G or 3G S. I have just bought a 3G and hoping to get rid of the work phone. Don't suppose there is one that allows either sim to take calls, receive messages and just chose which one to make calls from?

I know I am asking about the 3G but I am guessing this will be getting more exposure and most people will have an idea anyway.

Thanks

Finally sold my fantastic silver w995!
I have found a 3G 16gb per 390e. a 3g 8gb per 289euros
and a 3GS 32gb per 710 e
nobody seems to have 3GS 8gb (would be ok for me) or 16gb(justa few with no guarantee from EEUU)

There is no 8GB version of the 3G S, although there were rumours a while back that one might be introduced once supplies of the 8GB 3G dry up later this year (assuming they don't just keep making them). At the moment the 8GB 3G is supposed to be the "entry level" model, then it jumps immediately to the 16GB 3G S.

Personally I think the 3G together with the 3.0 firmware is still a fantastic device - even without the S it still runs plenty fast, the only really noticeable things it lacks are the video recording, compass, and voice control. In your shoes I'd either go cheap and save a lot of money (the 289 euro 8GB 3G) or go for broke and seek out a 16GB 3G S, the 16GB 3G is officially discontinued now and it doesn't seem worth paying a premium for the extra memory without getting the S features as well.

Thank you!!!
I only liked the 3gs per the beter camera, really!
8gb is quite enough for music in a phone I think ; I do not use gps nor location services or documents views,,,,I need music, phone, some photos of my parrot Greta when she is playing, or my students in a party,,,,and GOOD access to wifi , (I miss the radio REALLY too)...games and alarms

Will I have enough?

The camera on the 3G isn't great - no video, only 2mp, fixed focus, no flash - but for snaps of your parrot I think it'd probably do the job! The photos it takes generally look great on the iPhone screen, they just start to look a bit shabby when you look at them on the PC. Having said that, I think the quality's improved a little with the 3.0 firmware.

The 3G certainly does music, has great wifi, and is a great phone too. There are some great Internet Radio apps in the appstore too, which work just fine as long as you've got wifi or good data service nearby (although I agree, an FM tuner woudln't hurt..)

what the,,,,,?
I finally got all my holidays money ( I am not going anywhere) and ordered a 3GS in white, 16gb!!!!
The thing costs me 510 euros + shipping from EEUU (about 560, fedex insured and no customs).
LOTS of money but in comparison to all I found here.....
Now I am crossing my fingers. It is an unlkocked ATT iphone, brand new, only opened to jailbreak it and unlock it, that guy is Spanish and has a long history of selling iphones and has promised to solve any problems that may appear. He lives in EUU and can take them to be exchanged if necessary.
Well, I am crossing my fingers and praying!!!!!!
I am looking forward to yous suggestions and help about what to put in it, and how!
Will keep you updated. I expect it on Tuesday morning
