As many know times are tough. Many companies are going belly up. One such company did just resently, and they sold off all their laptops Lenovo T61 for $100 and there was about 100. The problem is now I have a Levono T61 with Pointsec on it, no security passwords, and no recovery cd's....... and not able to get them because the tech guys open them up to void the warranty. Typical

As I was told, the original factory settings has Windows Vista, but Windows XP Professional was installed and used with pointsec, but in the recovery partition is the original OS Vista.

I did as anyone would do, I went into the BIOS tried going into F9 Setup defaults, and nothing happens. Next I changed to bootable dvd-cdrom to try to do a new install from my Windows XP Professional install cd I have, which works on any computer. Now, after I used the install cd, now the hard drive is not recognised.
I am not that technical, and followed all the advice I found off the tech help chats. I really do not care for the information in the HD. I just want to wipe it clean and use my own OS or the original Windows Vista. But, I need step by step help now how to do it. Is there a way to do that now?????

Next, I tried using Linux to get into the computer, but the same thing happened, did not recognised the HD and kept trying to reinstall over and over again, so basically got hung up....

I do not mind getting a new Seagate HD and then install my windows xp professional, but I would like to get into the Windows Vista. But I am afraid that this pointsec thing will be difficut to get around and will need to get a new HD, which will be my last resort.

If I do nothing and let it start up, I can start up the computer, and it goes to Pointsec. I do not have and will not be able to get the password to and or get the recovery cd from Lenovo. I called them, and tech support told me that the company registered the computer as "been opend" and the warranty is now void.... Tricky *****Expletives removed by Moderator*****.

I can get into the BIOS, and can change the startup boot priority drives to whatever I want. But, now I am afraid with the install I tried wiped everything out, even though I did not get very far. The Window xp professional went into set up, and tried to do the usual system verification, and then it came up to reboot and now the HD is not recognised. So, I do not know if things got perm. corrupted. I have been able to go forward because I am stumped.

I have seen things about changing Serial ATA/SATA or changing things in Intel AMT, but they do not give you a step by step how to do that.....

Startup/ Boot Mode is Quick and others are enabled. Network Boot Priority is PCI LAN, should I change it to USB CD?
Everything in Security password disabled. Security chip inactive. BIOS update option disabled. Memory Protection executive prevention disabled. All I/O Port access all enabled.
In restart Load Setup defaults, when you go in and select yes load default configuration, nothing happens.

I can do a HDD diagnostic and says ok.
In BIOS Setup Utility, I have F1 general help, F3/ESC exit, F5/6 change values, Enter, F9 Setup defaults that does not work, F10 save and exit.

BIOS Version 2.17 from April 2008.

Who can help with a step by stp way of fixing this? I have seen many little things here and there, but no one really explains.

I tried DiskPatch to get in and this is what was said when it got hung up like linux live when I tried using it. It just keeps saying this over and over again.

Caldera DR - DOS
Warning Address line A20 already enabled
cannot find an unused 64byte range in upper memory for use EMS Page frame. Using FRAME = None
EMM386 3.27

Another Forum for thinkpads said that they do not allow such specific help. Get a new hard-drive, or use an autoclave or DBAN HD cleaner, and go from there. Which is an option, but will lose windows vista. But I may not have any option.

Desperate help needed

Just do a full format from within the XP setup and just install XP rather than Vista.

I get:
Setup didnot find any HD drives installed. Make sure any hard drives are powered on properly to computer, and disk related hardware configuration is set up correctly. This may involve running manufacturers suplied diagnostic disk. WHICH I DO NOT HAVE. Set up cannot continue, to quit press F3...........

I was given the advice, my version of windowsxp prof. is older, and it does not have the new drivers for the Lenovo T61, only windows vista... so I may need a windows vista install cd..... which I do not have...

just a thought, can you download either the windows 7 beta iso or server 2008 trial iso from microsoft and try installing one of them, then formatting and installing XP?

I can only get into BIOS now. I cannot do anything else. I cannot get into the computer to do anything. I was told to go into SATA, change to to IDE then change the RAID or RAIR. Not sure about this.....

Still nothing. And need some guidence

I think fatreg is correct here. I used to be a PC repairman and it sounds to me like your hard drive has either had it physically, or pointsec has somehow totally screwed it up as you've already suggested.

Altering the RAID settings will have no effect unless RAID was set up and used in the first place (was it?)

I'm afraid that the chances of you recovering any data from the pointsec encrypted drive are slim anyway. After all, if it was easy and common knowledge to decrypt the drive's contents, there would be little point having pointsec!

I think the next step is to try installing to a new drive
