Decent .avi converters? |

Does anybody know of any decent FREEWARE .avi converters?
I have some .avi files I want to put onto DVD but they are too large to put onto one DVD. I tried a couple of converters to shrink the size of the files but they screw up the picture quality, are there any about that dont mess with the quality?
Thanks! |

Sothink movie dvd creator:
http://www.sothinkmedia.com/movie-dvd-maker/
It's completely free and safe. They make money by selling additional converters and tools for it
It's also very easy to use. You add the .avi that you want to burn to a list and it then it tells you how much space is needed on the dvd.
If it's too much space, you just lower the encoding bit rate (press the "options" button) until it fits on the disk.
Bob's your Aunty and all that...

Cheers Cyco!
It worked great.
I knew you would prob be the one that would know.
I would have posted in your PC help thread but I know things can get lost in there and not every1 reads it. Also I was a bit desperate to get this DVD sorted.

Huh. Looks like I jumped the gun.
I posted the last message before it finished. The finished disc cant even be read by my laptop never mind the dvd player!
Whats all that about?
edit: And its screwed the disc up as well, I cant format it or anything, was ok before!

You have to make sure that the resulting file size is less than 4Gb before you burn the disk. If it's not, reduce the encoding bit rate until it is. This is just a peculiarity of sothink, it's still only on version 1 and not finished yet!
Also, it's best not to do too much on the computer whilst the .avi is being converted. This is true of all video converters because they are very processor intensive, so doing extra stuff on the computer can slow the conversion process down and cause glitches. Or even ruin the disk...
I've made a few coasters with sothink in the past, but since I figured out the "less than 4Gb rule" it's been working fine. The quality of the resulting DVD depends on the quality of the original file more than the encoding bit rate, so don't worry about dropping the bit rate to get the file size well below 4Gb
If that doesn't solve the problem then I don't know! I have sothink on my desktop (XP) and Laptop (Vista) and it works fine for me on both.
EDIT: Are you using DVD-RW disks? That might be the problem?

I am using RW discs. I dont have regular ones to try and see if thats the problem.
I learnt many years ago that when doing new things on a PC not to waste my time, so instead of trying to convert and burn all the files I just used one which was less than 1Gig. I tried it a couple times both times it took half an hour to convert and burn but the second time i just ended up with a blank disc, but at least we can rule out the 4gig rule so im assuming its because of RW discs.
Oh well. |

Yeah, it could be because of using RW disks. But just to clarify for everybody, it's the file size AFTER conversion that's important, not the size of the .AVI file. Sothink shows it on a bar:
You can adjust the final size by clicking the options button and changing the video bit rate as shown here. Higher bit rate = bigger filesize.
