The way I understand it, the pic in the photo section has to be identical to the one in the contest, so when you want to photoshop, etc., it has to be done before uploading the pic to the photo section.

You're absolutely right, Marly.
These stipulations have been in the esato photo competitions before; nothing new with them this month.
Upload the pic to the esato photo gallery first, edited or not, before including the pic in this monthly photo competition thread.
Hope this clarifies things.

The irony being that the phone pics uploader will only accept original camera pictures (The exif data MUST be intact for it to allow an upload)

Editing is possible and without jeopardising the EXIF data to such a point that it won't upload in the photo gallery. An example, a year or two ago I cropped a N73 pic or two of mine (see my older uploaded pics for an example) then uploaded them. The EXIF data revealed the new dimensions after cropping etc but I was still able to upload it.
Also, look in some of the previous competitions. Some people have altered the colours, lighting etc and have still managed to upload them.
On a personal note, I'm actually for no editng; as I have mentioned before in the 'flowers' photo competition some time ago, I believe that this should be a competition to reflect the mobile phone camera's abilities (and its user), rather than the user's skills of a picture-editing programme.
Having said that, Don did mention that editing was permitted to avoid any accusations of photo-editing skullduggery by any members, if it was a total non-editing prerequisite.
As such, these stipulations will more than likely be carried over into forthcoming monthly photo comps here, as it seems to have worked well over the previous months.
As the old adage goes, 'if it ain't broke...'

I personally would have thought it a photo competition in the sense of composition and style rather than a dickfest of "My camera is better than yours"
If it's being judged on whose camera takes better photos then the point has been lost, especially considering early competitions were won with 2MP non autofocus cams.....

Who said it wasn't? I'd like to think that it was the case.

I agree.

It's not; my point about that it should reflect the mobile phone's camera abilities and the user's was not to trigger a "dickfest", but rather trying to get the max of the limitations of a mobile phone's camera.
An example, the previous month's comp was won with a P1i's 3.2mp cam, not one of the newest 2008 cameraphone offerings (not that megapixels are the be-all and end-all, as we know, but rather reference to newer processors/cam modules, lenses etc too).
If my response in my previous post has caused any ambiguity about this (to anybody), then sorry but that certainly wasn't my intention.
