I've not owned a P1 or W960, but I have owned an N95. Just wanted to add that I'm not on anyone's side, and that I never had a problem with WiFi connection or signal strength on the N95. Having said that, I used mine mainly at home - I don't see why I should pay silly prices to surf the net whilst I'm out.

As for video recording, I think the quality produced by the N95 is very good for a phone, but I wouldn't call it 'DVD-like'. The colours were not very rich, although the video was pretty smooth. It did the job for me, but then I wasn't expecting it to replace a proper camcorder.

Just my 2p.

I've had an E61 and an N95, and also a P990i and I have never had a problem connecting with any of them and for mobile devices I didn't notice any difference in speed between the 3 and was very happy using all of them!

hey,
well just i want to say that i have the P1i and its amazing while using the wifi, once i'v used a N95 wifi and it couldn't locate the server, but the P1i shows a full coverage.

but its obviouse that the N95 video recording is better than the W960, for a simple reason its a 5MPX camera?!!! not 3.2MPX camera.

Surfing the net was also fast on N95, but it's does not have a good reception. There are three concrete walls between my room and our wlan router and N95 couldn't find the router about 80% of the time and had a very low reception quality the other part of the time. W960 finds it every single time with full reception.

@Mclarenf1
The amount of megapixels has no saying on this.

That has to be one of the funniest things i have ever heard the W960 having a more powerful and better WiFi chip than the N95 that really is funny coming from one of the most biased towards SE people on the whole planet. Some times what you say makes sense but other times your statements lack any sort of credibility at all go read all the problems people have with WiFi b from SE and then show me people that have problems with Nokia's implementation of WiFi. Maybe you are trying to get Fatreg's funniest member title not a bad start at all well you made me laugh.

Really? Well, then LISTEN UP, buddy - I ain't joking!

W960 has a much better signal reception than N95 does. There's absolutely nothing funny about that, as it's die hard facts that has nothing about the b/g standards support to do (by the way, all Nokia handsets with wlan perform like b-standard handsets in terms of speed, in case you didn't know).

well i totally agree with mizzle, the signal reception on w960i for wifi is much better than n95 8gb...i searched for wifi from the same place on n95 8gb and w960i(at the same time obviously), n w960i got me 2 networks, whereas n95 8gb showed none.

oh n btw, n95 8gb has got the best video recording(amongst the 2 ofcourse).

so i gather you have both the w960 and the black n95-8gb?

that's good news for me because that's an exact comparison i need.. nokia keep touting the video capture on the n95-8gb as being 'dvd-like' what is it like in comparison to the w960's video capture ability?

also i hear it is possible to put some sort of see thru lens cover sticker on the n95-8gb (since it does not have a lens cover..) i find this very strange but every other phone on parallel on the market does not have one.. k850 doesn't w960 doesn't.. why are they phasing out this necessary piece of plastic??

You can customise the power of the N95 wifi. By default it is set to low power and power save mode. This is to reduce power consumption.

Change these settings (in Phone Setting->wlan) and set wifi power to "high" and non-power save mode and you will not have any issue with picking up hotspots and signal quality.

Does W960/P1 give you this flexibility?

@pete

Well, n95 8gb surely has great video recording, w960i is not even close to it. The camera of w960i is quite dissapointing. There is no auto focus in it when ur recording videos. only 3x zoom, and 15 fps is too old for now, u will be seeing some blurs and lines in fast paced subjects.
But n95 8gb has 30fps recording and 640*480. So this means, u wont see those blurs in ur video(unless u move it really hard)...i wud say the n95 8gb video recording is more tv like rather than dvd like, and its great.

I wud recommend u to get n95 8gb if camera is important to u, cuz w960i's camera(still pictures) gives u good colours on the left side of the picture and greenish colours on the right side, thu i hope this will be fixed with a newer firmware!!

Well i havent heard about this plastic thing..so i cant really say on this.

Actually i had borrowed n95 8gb from my friend (for a month).. n right now i have given him back. And i own w960i.
If there is anything else u want to kno then u can surely ask me.

@mib
oh i jus checked it with my friend, he said it was on high, n then i asked him to search again jus to make sure, n the results wer same...i dint find this option on w960i to change wifi power thou.

I had this turned on, so it's still crappy performance by the Finns.

And no, there's no such option, but there is a connection timeout setting and also the fact that Sony Ericsson phones last much much longer battery wise when using WLAN.

I havent seen WIFI problems reported for N95. I used the N95 wifi for over 9 months and have no problems. From what I read SE UIQ wifi implementation has a lot of issues connecting to corporate wifi (using WPA standard). Never heard of such issues with Nokia wifi.

And the obsoleted wifi-B standard in SE will have more compatibility issues with wifi routers/hotspots.

I don't know what has changed with the W960, but I just checked the WLAN on it and it found a g-only network at my school. Weird, huh? Also, I've compared the reception strength to a P990 and the W960 found no less than four networks (the primary one at full blast), while the P990 only found my primary network and not at full reception strength. What's noticeable here is that I tried searching on my laptop and it was not full strength either and so wasn't my home PC with what's probably the world's largest WLAN antenna. My home PC did however find one of the three other networks, but also on low strength.
