i actually don't like it, saw it today in an o2 store, it feels plasticky. I am going for the N95 8GIG version in March/April when I can upgrade, unless Nokia brings out something better

EXCEPT...T9 on the N82 blows. I'll assume all Nokias are the same.

Anyone know when this is out on vodafone, Vodafone seem to offer better airtime deals than O2, O2 seems to be all about texting!

I think its out already on voda, not sure check their website. I went into o2 the other day and compared the N82 with the w960 and went for the W960 in the end. The n82 looks very plastic, dunno not very fond on its looks, ended up going for the w960

any improvement to backlit intensity? how about direct flash 3 support?

If the update just give faster performance and more free RAM, I think nobody will be interested to upgrade. The N82 is already too darn fast and have more than enough free RAM at the moment.

Most of the UI (except opening image) response is instantaneous. I doubt my eyes can detect any different if it is faster.

Well.. its the same as in computers. Do you really notice the difference between a slightly higher end processor and the one positioned just below it? The faster the better! Although the "faster" claims on a phone might be a tad tricky to verify.
