I'm due for a contract renewal with my carrier. l'm keeping my W810, and will take whatever phone the carrier offers with the new plan as a backup. Currently, they have the Z525 for free, and the W300 for $20. How do these compare? The W300 seems like a better backup to the W810, as they're both phones. But I'd like to hear impressions of both.

BTW, they sell the Moto SLVR L7 with 100-song-limited iTunes for $100 with contract, but the much newer (and better!) W810 is only $75 on the same contract

I have to agree. That $20 difference seems to buy so much more phone! The only downside is having to buy a M2 memory card, but it's only a minor inconvenience.

i'd go for the W300 as it is memory expandible which it makes it a real back up phone.

Turns out Cingular is letting me go month-month, even with the changes made to my data plan. Which is good, because my legacy voice plan is better than anything they are currently offering!

But, I did buy a W300i anyway, a black SIM-free one, $215 from Amazon.com w/free shipping. With my iPod now history, my all-in-one device can only be backed up by an all-in-one device This also gets me into M2 memory cards (got a 2GB one from NewEgg.com for about $65), so I should be ready for whatever replaces my W810 as my primary phone (likely a W610, but we'll see).

Pure Mobile had the better deal, $168 + $19 for 3-day shipping, but their W300s turned out to be Rogers-branded units... not to mention, the one I received arrive slightly flattened (Luckily, they're giving me a full refund + prepaid return shipping.)

wow man, that's an ugly gap in the box. Does the branding disable the possibility to use flash themes on your W300?

It came a day early...

It's an impressive phone for the price. Solidly built, lightweight, good displays (inside one is the same resolution as my T637, yet much brighter, clearer, more vivid; the outside orange one is cool), similar in functionality to my W810. I can't tell any difference in the app between the two. Again, the value is just incredible. Sync'ed nicely with OS X, too, using Feisar's $3.00 plug-in.

Downsides:

  • Not the greatest of materials - a very "plasticky" phone. But at this price, I really can't complain.
  • Standby clock interferes with controls when phone is shut.
  • I put a few divots in the rear plastic housing trying to get the bloody f'n battery cover off! The same retard who designed the S710a's battery door strikes again, with a vengeance
  • The keypad is... terrible. Keys are too smooth, too flat, too close together, and too small. Almost impossible not to hit the wrong key during input.
  • I'm not warming up to M2 memory - yet. I already miss the W810's externally-accessible card slot. And why didn't this phone ship with a full-size MSDP card adapter?

I may be sending in my W810 for minor service - the W300 will get me through the waiting time, no problem.

I had fits trying to get the battery door off my sister's W300 too. Felt like I was going to rip the phone apart I was trying so hard. Had to go back to the store and the sales guy showed me that in needed the "upside down two thumb" method to get the freaking battery cover off. My attempts to get the battery door off also left two well defined scratches on the plastic covering of the battery itself.

Imo, you should've read the manual first

The manual only has a diagram of a single thumb easily sliding the cover down and away. This does not reflect reality.

Indeed...it never indicated I needed to use two thumbs. It just showed a single arrow on the battery door tell you to push down and out. I had never encountered a product that needed two thumbs to open the battery door. I just treated it like a remote control battery door.
