i used dbpoweramp, once installed in the settings menu you will find a link to download codecs and download the mp4 codec.
but i would advise you not to do this.

i did this and i have to say they sound got worse. the higer tones just get lost so the sound wasn;'t that good. and besides that the w800 doens't read artist and track information from mp4 so you don't see the artist and track information just the file name which can be irritating

few days ago i did compare mp4 codecs nero and apple itune, latest versions. For me, apple itune sound better and more realistic using same bitrate, so now i'm using itune do decode mp3 to mp4 for use with z520 (bitrate 80 is fine, sometimes 64 for bad quality mp3s)

When you convert from mp3 to mp4, wouldn't it just remain the same quality (at best)? Is this just to get a smaller file size?

mp4's have good quality and save loads of space. My k700i really pis*'s
me off when it says need more memory or something like that.

You can store about 70 mp4 songs on a k700i with good space for other stuff.

mp4 sounds better using lower bitrate, so you will have same quality but with smaller file size, compared to mp3. Z520 has only about 16mb of memory, so thats why i'm converting to mp4s. Btw, mp3 is very old format, ogg, mp4, mpc...all are better compared to mp3, for my collection usually i'm using lossless or ogg, no mp3 for me anymore So, if you have some cd and want to listen it with your k750/w800 with high quality, use mp4 (m4a - Apple iTunes)

Exactly, converting an allready compressed mp3 to mp4 (or any other compressed format) will allways decrease quality further. Any ripping or conversion to any compressed format will allways decrease quality compared to the source.

But if you do want to convert your mp3's to a lower bitrate for filesize reasons, then you get better quality converting to mp4 than converting to mp3.

The point of using mp4/m4a/aac is to rip from cd directly to mp4 instead of rip from cd to mp3. A direct rip from cd to mp4 will give the same quality in 96kbps as a direct mp3 rip in 128kbps, but with lower filesize.
