.......Just had the mother of all arguments with Sony regarding Firmware updates......grrr. Won a sim free K700i (lucky me) .......
How the heck did you manage that? I've been trying to persude them to let me have a non-orange K700i for ages. They won't budge, even when I asked for my PAC number. They said the CAN'T do that, they don't have unmodified phones. |

I won a sim free phone. These come in proper Sony Ericsson boxes, without sim cards or any operator modifying. If you bought a handset full price from a company like expansys.co.uk without an operator contract, this would be the same.
Sony will not give you any unlocking codes for operator locked handsets. If you need the onlock code you will need to contact your operator and ask them for the code. They will probably charge you £30-£40 for this. Alternatively you can take it to one of these dodgy mobile phone places to get it unlocked. Only problem is that they have not worked out how to unlock the K700i as yet so you will have to wait on this. |

It isn't the battery dude, it is the f/w, with R2L, it fixes the, 'battery meter bug' so the battery is great, it is just R2A/E.

I must be very unluky I bought a sim free unlocked SE K700i on-line and stuck a voda sim in it. I checked my f/w and it must be the original generic code being RA041 and I am charging my battery every day and it's starting to really **** me off and I am beginning to regret paying £200+ for it brand new I live in a small town called Colwyn Bay in N.Wales UK and we have a carefone warehouse near me would they update the firmware for me? I am also confused as there seem to be 2 new firmwares out being R2L001 and R2V001 so what is the difference? I have already read the enhancements with R2L001 so whats the score with the R2V001? Does it incorporate the fixes in R2L001 and offer more functions or is it just a bug fix??
Would some kind member please send me an e-mail to stealthman@freeuk.com with the 2 firmwares and explain what the difference is? I can flash the mobile myself or get someone else to do it for me.
Many Thanks
Shane

If they will perform the upgrade then R2L001 is currently the one to go for. The vodaphone upgrades will add all the vodafone logos and the MP3 ringtone lock (which makes your sim free phone a bit pointless !!). R2L001 will sort out your battery problems. I can go several days between charges now as long as I don't play those addictive Java games.....damn you !!!
Be warned that not all car phone warehouse stores offer the repair service. It tends to be just the very big stores or the ones in out of town shopping parks. If yours is not that, then call the SE helpline and find out your local official SE service centre (as carphone warehouse are not). |

I foned a local vodafone service center called Vanguard 10 miles from where I live and they can put the new f/w(software update) and it will be ready in 2 days. I just bought a DSS -25 and its round but on the invoice its called a Desk Synchronisation Stand DSS-25?? reduced from £37.99 down to £18.99. Is this a sync Station as I am real confused and underneath you can plug your charger in. I have installed the drivers off the sony ERC cd and no joy so downloaded a 25 meg file from SE site. For some reason now its plugged into a USB port windows cannot find drivers for it
Site for my so called Sync DSS 25 is here
http://www.directmobileaccess[....]duct_info.php?products_id=1049
Thanks for any help and if I have bought the wrong item it can go back and I will get a proper sync station, which is what I thought this is
Cheers

@smjohns, you mean your battery life lasts for several days with continuous internet browsing? Mine is stil R2a041, my battery goes for a day. I went to a SE center here in Manila to upgrade to r2l, but they said their version is Asian Latin, while mine is Euro. Is there really a difference? Btw my k700i is unbranded and no warranty. If I pursue the upgrade, they said it might work but partial memory maybe lost. Is that possible? |

I would not say continuous connection. My phone certainly does not last any longer than the suggested figures on the SE website. SE claim 8hrs talktime and 12.5days standby. My phone is lasting about 3 days with normal phone/wap access (couple of hours use a day). As per you with R2A41 I was getting about 1 day's use. If I really try and not use the phone than much, I can get about a week out of it (couple of calls a day).
With respect to the firmware upgrade, when mine was done, I lost no ringtones, data, settings or anything. Obviously I can't comment if you are having a non-europe firmware installed. You will be able to get this done for free whilst it is within it's 12month warranty. As the phone is still fairly new, this is going to be a given. Apparently SESC can work out the manufacture date from the phone anyway.
The best option for you would be to wait until you can obtain a european version of r2l. Hopefully SE will set up their online update service very soon and you can then do it on the website. |

@ VWGolf
Yes you can. You need either a DSS-20 or DSS-25 and then you can use the Sony Ericsson Update Service. You may also be interested in this thread. |

A normal data cable can only be used to transfer sounds/videos/pictures etc, not to update the firmware. |

That will probably not be SE though They farm out this work to local repair centres who contract their services to SE. |
