K750i: Protected directories?

Hi,

Is there any way to pin/password-protect certain directories on the K750i? When I go to Media Player -> All Videos, it shows all the videos on my phone. I don't think my girlfriend would be too happy if anyone else was browsing my media player and found those

AFAIK there is not such option now.

If you're looking for a file and folder security feature, it is not currently available which will also require applications, such as the media player to honor the file and folder security. A major re-write, if I may say.

folder protection is not so basic for a phone.

even in windows you need third party apps to do that, like folder-lock, folder-protect

Not if you use NTFS and set security properly, but yeh, the phone can't do it

Every1 has ntfs but the majority prefer 3rd party apps.

The reason is that your method is vulnerable to safe mode.

ah sorry I suppose a camera a video recorder a media player / mp3 player, java support, bluetooth ..etc is basic

seriously to code a folder password takes 5 lines of text as maximum and could be easily implemented in the next firmware

quit defending SE you fanboys (no offense but some people here are die hard sony fans they would jump off a hill after sony ) if we don't get the message across we don't get better phones with more features, I like SE phones, I would like to make them better

Windows? Don't mock me I use Linux, and the lack of security on my K750i makes me shudder

Seriously though, at least a key pad lock that requires the phonecode to unlock the keypad would be ideal... I had that feature on my Siemens M65, and my girlfriend's Samsung D500 has lockable directories.

It seems like a big omission to me.

Not everyone has NTFS. FAT32 is a popular one for Windows.

Actually you are correct but I was referring to a phone that locks down actual directories. Smart phones not included.

and since SE is so innovative it would be cool if they actually made that feature in the next firmware/phone

I am not asking for a nuclear bomb in my phone I am asking for 5 lines of text to be added in the firmware, and since I see a lot of other people asking for the same thing then I guess it has it's purpose.

If you use that method of thinking then you should have told SE when they first implemented bluetooth in their phones:

By all means lead the charge. Write the code yourself and submit it if it is that easy. Have Davinci Team program it. They do a bit of ARM programming. Come on get things done!!!!!!!!

majority or all motorola phones have it as far as I'm aware - can lock specific directories not just code for keypad

I'm not suggesting encryption or anything, just a lock on the phone so that someone *casually* browsing my phone couldn't find anything valuable. It *wouldn't* need implementing at the filesystem level. Even a pin-locked keylock would be great.

Have you mentioned this to SE to see if this is such a simple solution as other here have stated? I know that SE is actively listening to suggestions to make their products better. I also know that your idea is not new but for some reason, SE does not consider it a "viable" feature. No idea why, but you can always ask again.

What are you talking about? NTFS is even older than FAT32. NTFS was introduced with Windows NT in like 1993 and FAT32 didn't come until Windows 95. You must mean FAT16.

I'm on NTFS but there's still quite a lot on FAT32. FAT32 is still used because it runs more efficiently on smaller volumes and is generally a bit quicker.

Reiser4 is a computer file system, a new "from scratch" version of the ReiserFS file system, developed by Namesys and sponsored by DARPA as well as Linspire.
As of June 2005, Reiser4 still has not been merged into the mainline Linux kernel and consequently is not supported on many Linux distributions; however, its predecessor has been much more widely adopted.

I would say that Reiser4 has quite a ways to go before it rules anything.

sapporobaby: R4 isn't the most stable of filesystems, but it's damn fast. I've never experienced a problem with it yet.

SE will not implement this, not in a current firmware anyway, they don't make these types of changes to firmware.

This is a feature reserved usually for smart phones. Your basic handset is not for carrying data with an aim to make it secure.

The aim is not to make it secure - that would require encryption.

The aim is just to stop anyone from snooping around personal files on the phone.

If you want security, buy a pda, it oranises and files stuff for you in what order one wants. Make sure the pda has Fingerprint security (Safest method yet)..... Period..

It's all the security in the world + Organiser functionality.

not everyone wants a pda phone - I think folder security isn't a big ask for a device that has the ability to store bucket loads of info, including it's own recorded images, video and sound, yet is small enough to be easily lost or stolen.

Try this

Make a folder call Private, in that folder make 10 folders called 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9. In every folder do the same thing and then again.

Then just pick a "password" ex. 1458. Now the location to store your files will be /Private/1/4/5/8/ . Is not the safest way but it will be VERY anoying for a unknown person to look over 10000 folder combinations to find your files.

That's exactly what I did, but I was slack and only went to 4. So I have four folders called 1,2,3 and 4, each with four folders named 1,2,3 and 4. I've done this to 4 levels, so I have a four digit "pin number" made up of numbers between 1 and 4 that I use to drill down to my private files. Each folder down to the fourth level has four folders in it, so peeps would easily get lost trying to find anything (each folder is called either 1, 2, 3 or 4, so it get's very confusing unless you have the 'pin').

Still stops idle hands from accidently viewing my XXX content. Example, my 8 year old niece, who certainly doesn't need to see that stuff! Yet with this system I can still let her play with my phone.
