Here it is bro! Fire away!

Some of his initial contributions...

This thread is a tribute to a great pinoy artist. Go Manfran!

Go manfran go! This is a first in Esato... Onli in da pilipins treds!

Technique-wise, manfran's works have international aesthetics, yet there's no doubting the Pinoy origin once you read the scattered texts and the speech ballons. (Or no-balloons, in the style of Jeff Danziger.)

The sense of humor is spot-on present-day Pinoy. That's where many Filipino political cartoonists fail -- they either leave the humor out of it, or are out-of-touch, or are simply un-funny. True, it's a matter of personal style and the "lance-and-dragon" approach sometimes works -- the terrific cartoonist of the defunct Today newspaper comes to mind -- but we could already get our dose of depressing seriousness from the news articles themselves, can't we.

I am personally hoping that manfran continues to develop his own visually complex cartoon style. It's tempting to go the A.Lipin route and be done with it for the day but we want lots of material to fill the forthcoming Php7,500/pc coffetable manfran books so....

@manfran - Are these "greatful dead" the same ones who rose from their graves last election to vote for GMA?

They must have their own band leader - Winston Garcia in place of Jerry Garcia....

Posted by chax
Go Mafran!
We're so proud to fellow Filipino that are so artistic in their own way... Like you!!!

@Chili
Sir, pwede ka na rin gumawa ng thread para sa mga black & white pictures mo!

Posted by manfran
@chilli, malamang sila rin yun! hehehe! Think of it guys, pera natin ang ginagasta nila sa mga occasions na ganyan. That's why they needed to impliment the e-vat kasi they used up our money during the last elections pang bili ng boto! nyehehehe! lang yang buhay 'to!

Btw, tama suggestion ni @chax, gawa ka rin ng thread for your B/W images! Sige naaaaa!!!!

Posted by chili
@manfran - This administration's arrogance, hypocrisy and greed for power are really boundless. They'd spend the taxpayers' money to make sure of winning in any election. And then charge US again for it, in the form of EVAT! All this, after GMA said in 2003 that she wouldn't run again.

Why go after the poor's purse? Why so easy for the gov't to sell off the NLEX, then do nothing (except take kickbacks?) when the Lopezes raised the toll fee to absurdly high rates?

@chax - Thanks bud, but I think the b&w thread's an awful idea. Next thing you know, every Pinoy would be making a thread about their favorite vegetable, sawsawan, etc. Our @manfran's case is truly exceptional though. He's the editorial cartoonist for the Daily Tribune.

Sad reality pare, we are losing our talented and highly skilled workers to other countries. Pumunta ka sa ibang bansa at makikita mo ang pinoy ang pinaka masipag, talented at dedicated sa trabaho. Sayang at di napapakinabangan ng sariling bayan natin ang mga taong ito.

In more developed countries, hard work, dedication and honesty are amply rewarded. Never mind the talent.

We have talent and diskarte. But entrepreneurship isn't our natural reaction, unlike, say,Taiwan. As a result, we have a glut of salarymen and therefore cheap labor. Why? A businessman-friend of mine, speaking from experience, says that corruption is a big part of it, making things difficult for the budding businessman.

Posted by manfran
Tama ka dyan @chilli. Corruption is our government's evil twin!

Posted by Scythe
manfran, firstly, I would like to commend you for your great works. have you already won awards in editorial cartooning?

whoa ! these cartoons are awesome ! Great work manfran !

Posted by manfran
@Scythe & @k4m!k4ze, thanks! I was one of the participants of the last editorial competition organized by the NCCA a few months ago. The competition had a theme: 'Corruption'. Unfortunately the judges didnt seem to like biting, critical commentary cartoons that reveal the negative side of our government. Only the cartoons that projected GMA fighting corruption were picked.

@manfran
regarding NCCA, how come i am not surprised you didn't get any awards for your work. with your gift, we are surely proud to have an esatonian member like you, and the most important factor of all, you are a Filipino.

@manfran - great work!

good thing you weren't posting that much when a certain foreigner-wannabe-I-am-through-with-filipinas-mucho-dinero guy was here, maybe you have had made a cartoon of him... clearly he would have pissed you off..

GMA fighting corruption, ha ha... Man, just keep doing what your heart and conscience tell you to do. You'll gain respect that way in the long run. You know you're a cut above those other cartoonists, not just technically, but more importantly, attitude- wise.

your right. GMA said a lot before that she didnt fulfill. Like she wont run. she also didnt fulfill her ten point legacy. i saw that in the news report the other night.

may i disagree? corruption is made by man. the system got corrupted by man. corruption got in becasue of the people going in government. its not our government's twin, its our politician's shadow. good personification though. cool!
