Well first you should google for there two things hiragana and katakana. These are japanese alphabetes. Wonder y 2 of them? Well hiragana is used for normal japanese words and grammatics. Katakana is used to write down foreign words which can sound as if they were not. For example word pen in japanese would be pen and taxi would be takushi. (if you dont want to be laughet at by japanese say sound "shi" more sounding like "si". Well your homework is to learn these alpabets by heart.(what a pain?). Then we can continue with grammatic basics

The best way to learn letters is to write down about of 20-30 of each and pronounce them each time. When you finished telme- ill continue. Now im goin sleep- 1am already.

Posted by axxxr

Posted by EastCoastStar
are you gonna learn to read and write, or only speak??

Posted by axxxr
Preferbly a bit of both.....would make it easier to understand the language better.

Posted by EastCoastStar
very cool. i will follow along with this thread to learn a little bit also

I've got a set of "Lets Learn Hiriganana" Cards, as well as their Katakana equivalents, but I can't find them . They are just easy ways to remember the characters, like "Ka" is "Ka going off a cliff" and "Su" is "Soon It will be spring" and "He" is an arrow pointing to "Heaven" (looks a bit like "^" )

Nick

try and dig them out and post some pics they would come in very helpful

I can already speak some Japanese and have learnt about 75% of the alphabet. I can count in Japanese no problem. The hardest thing for me to do was to find someone to practice with.

I have a Japanese penpal (email pal) to help me which is handy.

I've noticed that the ads were about learning japanese. I find it a bit strange since I've several times found that the ads match the subject of the thread.
Do you think hey're spying on us.... lol

What does it mean?

Arigatou means 'Thanks'
Arigatou gozaimasu means like 'Thank you very much'.
And then the Japanese people ad words to peoples names.
-kun: for little boys or male friends.
-chan: for little girls or female friends.
-san: for people that deserves more respect like a girlfriend or perhaps someone older than yourself.
-sama: often translated to 'master' or 'boss'.
-domo: said to samurais.

Posted by axxxr
I see interesting...i have a lot to learn.

Posted by Ing. FijoK
It`s too hard for me. Sweet english

Posted by Qoastro
I'll teach you some more tomorrow but now I have to write on an essey.

Ittekimasu!

Qoa

(Ittekimasu: a word often said right before you leave)

Interesting thread, I didn't know scotsboyuk can speak Japanese.

BTW, "doomo" = much
"arigatou" = thanks
"gozaimasu" is like a formal form of "desu" or the verb BE in english.

"arigatou gozaimasu" is simply a formal "thank you"
ありがとうございます。 (hiragana)
"domo arigatou gozaimasu" is "thank you very much"
どうもありがとうございます。 (hiragana)

the subject and object of a sentence is often ommited (implied) in a normal Japanese conversation that's why you won't see any Japanese translation for the word "you" in the sentence above. FYI.

Let em learn kana first. You should know yourself how hard it is to learn lots of japanese at once. Step by step we gonna teach em chatting on msn and mail. Of course thru inet we cant practice pronounciation, but that should be easily handled if you guys buy cd or something with japanese speech.(not music- songs have very specific gram)

Only word I remember with any clarity is Baka.

I thought some of you might be interested in this.

@Qoastro:

I didn't learn baka until about half way through learning japanese at school...

Would have been more apt to learn it at the start
