im asking because one of my friends has been given a barred v800, yes i think it was stolen but he would like to know if there is anyway it can be unlocked to that it works?

The simple answer is don't try and mess with a barred phone. It's barred for a reason. Flashing will not help.

3 years ago i had a phone that was locked to some network, think it was orange, and when i tried to use it with my sim, the phone got blocked. i took it for flashing and it worked, so it CAN be fixed. i don't advise you doing that because they can locate you if you use the phone, and you will get charged just as if you stole it.

If a phone is barred, its classed as stolen, even if the owner reported it lost. You can be charged with handling stolen goods. If the police prove that you had the service done, you're looking at time in jail.

Basically, its not worth the risk. Buy your own phone, not someone elses.

I think this kind of questions should only be "answered" by getting the thread closed.!
Definetly not by half giving the solution to support thieves, which i hate like the plague and colera put together!

Theres a difference between providing information which can be used to commit an illegal act, and educating people on how it works and the risks.

One way to stop the rampant theft of mobile phones is not having anybody buy or 'receive' them from thieves in the first place........

No chance.

The majority of stolen mobile phones in the UK end up in third world countries which have no IMEI barring, or any other country that differ how they bar phones. Thats why its such a high profit business, the people in those countries can buy cheap phones that come from the UK, when normally they'd have to work a year or two just to afford one otherwise.

I know, i see your point too, but really, the simplest thing to do would be to just ignore this kind of questions, right? Besides itīs a strange coincidence that itīs never the guy actually asking who has the barred phone, itīs always
" a friend of mine etc etc.." or
" i know this guy who, bla bla.."

Theres nothing wrong with educating people, especially if it helps them avoid a term in prison.

Tranquil has unlocked this thread. What I wanted to say is that it's very wrong to suppress discussions like this (@ threx), because chances of him doing something stupid would be much greater if you don't give him right information. We all know that the more harsh parents are, the worse will their children become.

I locked this topic yesterday, yes.
I reopned this topic yesterday, yes.
Why?
OK; I noticed this topic and kept an eye on it, felt that it was really lockworthy at first but decided to give the autor a chance to reply first. Seing that P900lover is a well known member I thought this was only fair.
As soon as he made his reply I locked it and was quite happy with that, but it didn't take long before I had a PM asking me why I'd done that. The PMers' argument was fair and I took a 2nd look, went through every post again with a fine tooth kome.
One reply indicates how to do solve the "problem", but that was emediatly dimissed by the next poster with refference to the elegalness of such action.
Further on I found that all of you are reccomending to not do anything; "don't try and mess with a barred phone. It's barred for a reason. Flashing will not help", "i don't advise you doing that because they can locate you if you use the phone, and you will get charged just as if you stole it", "if your caught with it or with the IMEI changed or not, you can be charged with handling stolen goods. If the police prove that you had the service done, you're looking at time in jail", "its not worth the risk. Buy your own phone, not someone elses", "to stop the rampant theft of mobile phones is not having anybody buy or 'receive' them" and "nothing wrong with educating people, especially if it helps them avoid a term in prison" are all educating advice to stay far away from stolen goods.
The link to immobilise.com are a direct link to a service who are there to prevent stolen phones being of any value to anyone and is basically advice to us all to do something to prevent mobile phone theft.
All in all I see everyones' answers here as a statememnt of what the majority of members of Esato think of stolen phones, and would be a good example to future questions on the matter being a waste of time.

I'm happy to lock the topic again, or remove it comletely for that matter, if too many dissagree with my reaoning for my actions. Any input on that on PM please so we don't throw this topc further off track.

Yes, some very good points. But, there are valid reasons to enable barred handsets. I've done this twice. My company purchases a lot of 2nd hand mobiles for testing purposes. We once purchased a barred handset at a police auction along with a bunch of others. With police permission, the handset was unbarred by the telco. Secondly, a new handset we purchased failed to register on the network one day. On further investigation, we found out someone had reported the imei as stolen, which was incorrect.
