Point And Shoot Or Take Full Manual Control With This Stylish 4-Megapixel Compact
Text And Photography By Peter K. Burian

Encased in a gorgeous body crafted from stainless steel, the Pentax Optio 430RS is really two cameras in one. First, it’s an easy-to-operate Program camera with some cool and fun features. These include a digital filter mode for special color tone effects and a stereoscopic mode for pictures that produce a three-dimensional impression when using the special viewer (included). The seven-point autofocus sensor, rare in models in this price range, allows for quick shooting, even with subjects far from the center of the frame.

Access the electronic menus, however, and the Optio 430RS can be set for serious shooting, with control over most every aspect of an image. Its fully manual mode, three light metering patterns, a full set of overrides, plus central spot autofocus and manual focus, provide many options. The 4.13-million pixel CCD and the premium-grade zoom lens with aspherical elements help to maximize this camera’s potential.

While vacationing with my family, we made numerous images of colorful people and places in small towns around various beaches. My daughter enjoyed the special effects features and the AVI movie mode, but I was interested in making more conventional travel images. Program mode, autofocus and the various default modes generally produced very good results. My images exhibited rich and clean colors, pleasing skin tones, a slightly warm balance and snappy contrast. The camera tended to over-expose average scenes slightly, easily solved with a -0.3 compensation factor.

Naturally, it was great to have additional overrides. For a vast field of sunflowers, I wanted to use an aperture of ƒ/8, so I switched to the manual operating mode. In harsh sunlight, setting the Contrast control to Low produced better detail in highlight and shadow areas. One morning, the sky was heavily overcast and the Shade setting produced the best white balance in this situation. Finally, for some pictures of gardens and colorful cottages, the High Saturation setting was perfect for punchy hues and tones.

My JPEG/Best images opened as 10.8 MB files with the quality that I expect from a 4-megapixel camera. These made for very nice 8x10-inch inkjet prints with high sharpness and clarity of fine details. Although I had used the default setting for sharpness, my images were certainly crisp; they needed only slight fine-tuning with the Unsharp Mask filter in Photoshop (which is true for most digitally captured images, regardless of the camera used).

At first glance, the Pentax Optio 430RS seems to be an uncomplicated camera with classy styling and an ultra-compact size. Look below the surface, though, and you’ll find a wealth of additional capabilities that target the more advanced shooter. If you’re looking for a high-resolution model that can satisfy the needs of everyone in the family, this one should be high on your list.
