When in the service menu of probably all Ericsson/SE phones, one of the items you can read about is the configuration. There you find things like the IMEI number, EFR HR FR but also the bands it works on.

So does that mean that the band the phone works on is actually a software issue? Something that is configured? If so, would that mean that at least in theory the bands could be re-configured?

It would be nice if you could change the band so that you could for example drop out the 1800 band and put in the 850 when in a country with such networks.

It is both software and hardware related. You got a dial up modem, no driver cd, kinda useless right?

(Sony)Ericsson mobile phone selects network automatically. The priority is set up to choose higher level at first.

I know the phone switches automatically, but one might think that if the configuration if which 3 band the phone uses can be configured, it might be possible to change that selection of 3 bands that is programmed in and make it a 850-900-1900 phone or whatever combination there is.
I agree that there is always software to drive the hardware, but in this case one could think that the hardware for the different GSM-bands would be the same - because of the mentioning in the service menu.
As for the modem comparison: you need drivers indeed, but I don't see the similarities. Configuration seems to imply only software settings, no?

Your idea is good.
Several choices under GSM-network menu would be ok.

Let say that SE will introduce first quad-band mobile phone. I offer the following selections:

* automatic
* 900/1800
* 850/1900
* select one [850, 900, 1800 or 1900]
