Incoming Call during GPRS

Hi,

It seems that whenever I'm using T610(GPRS)+Notebook for web-surfing, I'm unable to receive any incoming calls...

Is there anything in particular that I should configure in the phone? (if I remember correctly, T610 is a GPRS Class B phone, it should be able to handle the situation.)

Posted by amagab
I was able to receive incoming calls when I used my GPRS on my T610. Unfortunately, I don't have that phone anymore so I'm not sure what settings I had programmed. I'm sure someone else can help you with that here on Esato.

check your data accounts settings. particularly the allow calls option.

Posted by gforce23
Check whether call barring has been enabled

Posted by Ayush
Goto. Connect , data com, edit, allow calls, automatic

Posted by buster
I have the same settings and works fine for me

Posted by passerby
hi guys,

i've double check my phone settings and everything is in order...

however i noticed that that the problem only occurs when the gprs is busy sending and receiving packets...

during idle state (ie. gprs connected, but no up/down link in progress) i am able to receive incoming calls...

...it sounds logical, but my impression of "GPRS CLASS B" is that it should behave like an interrupt function. Shouldn't it temporary interrupt the gprs traffic and indicate that there is an incoming call?

perhaps some of you may like to try it and see if u are experiencing the same symtoms as me...

unless i'm mistaken that T610 is not a GPRS CLASS B phone...

Actually SOMETIMES it does happen that calls do not get through. Matter of chance! How many times has this occured?

Posted by #1
Yes. @Ayush was very much right here.

Posted by BobaFett
never had any probs with it, more with d gprs itself. sometimes really crowdy, think d operators sell it much too fast, but d system is not 100% perfect.

Posted by irc_gloom
Stupid question but for receiving calls during gprs, must the double call activated ?

I ask it cause I've only a prepaid card so single line. Tried before with T68 but didn't succeed.
Tried now with P900 and still busy when I'm using GPRs.

Anybody has info ?

Posted by 701
No, the gprs problem has nuthin'2do with the double call feature. U have to be able to get calls while using gprs unless...foe example here, we can't use agprs data on a prepayed unless u have a dedicated prepayed for data but on which u can't get calls.Just gprs.Check with ur operator cuz it might be network related.I don't understand why u'd wait a week to get a straight answer here than calling ur Customer Service , pay a few $ on the call and find out what's wrong. They r obligated to sort it out u know...

Posted by passerby
I have tried emailing to my service provider but there was no reply from them...

so I tried calling the service hotline, but the customer service couldn't give me a straight answer...

here's what she said:
"...we never seems to have this sort of complain before...have u checked your phone settings?...it could also be that the phone you are using is having some problem...could it be also that you have mistakenly set some parameters in your pc that results in this problem?....*blah blah blah...

personally, I felt that she doesn't even know what she's talking about...

anyway i just have to live with it for a while and hope that nobody calls me during when i'm using gprs session...

Hi folks
ill have to agree with passerby, the same is the case with me, whereas i use a p900. when gprs is active and im using the inbuilt tools like the internet browser or 3rd party browsers like opera or agile messenger, I get the call through, but when i connect it to the laptop i cant get the connection through.

@all
Doesnt anybody have an answer for my question.

Just drawing conclusions from what has been posted on this thread already:

It would seem that voice calls will interrupt GPRS, unless data is being transmitted. Therefore, if you are using any application of GPRS that requires constant transmission of data (e.g. phone as PC modem(!)), you ain't getting any calls!

Dunno what the specs of Class B GPRS are but it seems fairly straight forward to me.

Posted by georgejason
@dave_uk
Wat u say is straight. My doubt is that when im browsing the net using the internal browser and there is gprs transmission, I can get incoming calls, whereas when i connect the phone as a modem and there is gprs transmission I dont get a call. Is there any difference between the transmissions of gprs when used inside and outside the phone.

Pls explain.
thanx in advance

Posted by dave_uk
TBH, I'm not entirely sure - there are many more knowledgeable than me round here on the technical side....but, maybe if the transmission is initiated by the phone, GPRS can interrupt, whereas if the connection is activated from a PC, phone loses capacity to do this.
Must be something to do with your PC connection, or the modem functionality of the handset.

Point is, I think this is just the way it is - doesn't sound like anything's faulty, so doubtful there's anyway to change it....

....roll on the next firmware!

Updated to the latest firmware yesterday, but its the same. i guess it just aint possible then

thanx anyway.

hi guys,

i have been doing so homework on this after i encounter this problem...

here is something extracted from a Website:
Quote:

Class A
Class A mobile phones can be connected to both GPRS and GSM services simultaneously.

Class B
Class B mobile phones can be attached to both GPRS and GSM services, using one service at a time. Class B enables making or receiving a voice call, or sending/receiving an SMS during a GPRS connection. During voice calls or SMS, GPRS services are suspended and then resumed automatically after the call or SMS session has ended.

Class C
Class C mobile phones are attached to either GPRS or GSM voice service. You need to switch manually between services.

it seems that only CLASS A phones are able to be handle both GSM and GPRS traffics simultaneously...

Right,i av a different problem while using my t610 on gprs. When i get a call while on gprs it rings, asks me if i wanna accept,i say yes and the fone just freeze's and then i av to take out the battery? Rarely i can take the call but then it does the same while trying to resume wap? Any1?

Posted by georgejason
is SE P900 class A or B or C type of fone

Posted by anish
@GeorgeJason
Try the following settings and let us know whether it worked
Go to
1. Control panel
2. Internet Accounts
3. Click the "Other" tab

Preferred Mode (bearer preference)
Please note that your P900 can be used for either voice (or GSM data) calls or transferring GPRS data, but not both at the same time. It may however still be connected to GPRS. As an example, during GPRS data transfer your P900 may not receive incoming calls. As soon as the transfer stops incoming calls will be accepted.

Select GPRS only if you do not want to be disturbed by incoming phone calls while browsing the web. All incoming voice (and GSM data) calls are rejected. If you disconnect from the Internet, incoming calls can be received. Outgoing calls are possible, except during data transfer. This mode is useful if you are using sensitive Internet services, such as banking.

If you select GSM only, your P900 will not be connected to the GPRS network. If you choose to download e-mail or browse the web, your P900 will connect to GPRS only as long as is needed for the data connection.

If you select Automatic, your P900 will let you answer incoming GSM calls while having normal GPRS functionality. A GPRS data connection will be temporarily interrupted by a voice call.

@anish
Thanks a lot for the huge writeup anish, i had already tried the same things, that makes Sony Ericsson P900 a class B GPRS Phone and a collosal waste of money. at that price SE couldve included Class A features.

thanks a lot for ur time anish.

Sounds to me as if it's operator rather than phone related.

Posted by ~lozishere~
Am posting this on the train from my 800 while talkin on the phone. guess that makes it class A (?)

Posted by georgejason
@~lozishere~
Try connecting it to a laptop via IR or to a desktop via USB cable. Then tell me if u r able to talk yle there is data transfer. Then Ill accept it as a class A fone.

You probably get your phone software updated

Posted by passerby
yeah man...better check your T610 firmware...

the problem could be you are having a old version...

Posted by boto43
I Have the the same problem when surfin gprs wap.But sometimes I am able to receive a call. Its very Strange!

Posted by alitokmen
It's not that strange, actually you can receive a call if it is made when NO data transfer is going on... If you're in the middle of a download, though, the call will get rejected (on a non-class A GPRS phone, of course!)

Posted by mkush
well as far as i can remember when i've bin on gprs i aint bin downloading just browsing esato. My FW aint that old,i don't tink, only R3c,s'pose i should do it anyway.

I spent hours and hours on the internet via my t68i as a bluetooh modem and i had no problems receiving calls. Most of that time i was downloading something or refreshing "Esato Latestposts" and the phone was ringing like always. Never tried to check if i'm available or not. A friend told me that he got a message when he tried to reach me that i'm not available, but that was when i was in school surfing from wap. Anyone else had this "no problems"? Or t68i is a Class A phone? :-D

Posted by passerby
i believe the the older phones are only gprs class B ...

your situation could be that it so happens that in between the gprs data blocks the incoming call is able to interrupt the phone protocol stack...which allow the phones to detect the incoming call.

...

Posted by stewie
That could be the reason why i was experiencing some problems while sending some attachments via email. I was sending email when i received a call and when the conversation war over i had to resend email because the first time it failed.

Posted by passerby
i was surfing the internet the other day and i remember clearly that i read from somewhere that phones are GPRS Class B type...

(unless i'm dreaming...:C)

anyway, i try to find the link and share it with everyone in esato... )

Posted by stewie
You do that...

U want passerby to dream or to find the link?

Posted by stewie
To find the link,of course.But anyway, :-D

Posted by georgejason
Hoping he finds the link and it says that SE P900 is a Class A phone. hoping against hopes.

I know that one of the advantages of GPRS over CDS connection( analogue) is that u ALWAYS receive the calls when u r in the middle of the gprs session.the data transmission stops and the call gets in.After u finished the call, u can resume the data transfer. If u can't receive calls during gprs sessions is cuz u have some barring into ur phone or ur provider has a problem. It's abnormal not to be able to get a phonecall while using gprs.

Posted by georgejason
@701
wat u say is absolutely right. I have no call barring in my fone. The queer thing is that people using n3650 are able to get incoming calls yle using gprs on their laptops or pcs, but when i use my p900 in the same network, i dont get incoming calls. thats what is buggin me. we dont want Nok one higher up than SE

Posted by 701
@georgejason: r u sure they use the same sim, the same network, the same laptop? u gotta make some comparitions

Posted by georgejason
Same sim, same network, same service package.
My network guy is stumped. so im takin my laptop this week. but would be happy to solve it by myself and give the guy a few tips. and the major thing is that ive been tryin to solve it for the past month. im not a newbie as far as modems are concerned. whatever ...

Posted by passerby
hey guys...something to share with all of u...

I am pretty sure that P900 is also a Class B type device...

recently i was surfing web on my p900, and was waiting for a file that to complete downloading...while waiting i decided to call my wife...

guess what... after i dial her number... a pop-up message display prompt me the following message:-

" GPRS will be suspended if you continue. You may lose data. Continue? [No] [Yes]"

if even p900 is a gprs class B phone, i think i can truely be sure that all the other model phones are definately a Class B too.

Hey guys it has to do something with your network, because with my network in SA l can recieve calls when connected to GPRS
