How Samsung flew bloggers half way across the world and threatened to leave them

"Samsung launched its Mobilers program in India. Clinton Jeff of Unleash the Phones and another blogger who asked to remain unnamed were two of the ones who were chosen as winners of a contest and given Mobiler perks. Now before you go calling foul, bear in mind that programs like this are imperative in some countries. Without them the bloggers will often not get early access to devices, or in some cases will be among the last to see them. Engaging with the programs means that they get access and they get to bring news to their respective audiences.

Jeff, however, reports that they made it abundantly clear to Samsung that they were first and foremost independent bloggers and that they had no intention of acting as brand ambassadors for the company. Even with this restriction in place, the two were invited by Samsung to attend this year’s IFA conference in Berlin, a large trade show that’s important to European and Asian mobile device coverage. Though surprised by the invitation, they took up Samsung on its offer to fly them to the show and to cover their hotel.

An important point – In the invitation email, Jeff reports that he was asked whether he’d like to attend as a reporter or as a promoter. He was insistent that he would only accept the offer if he was allowed to do so as a reporter."

This is an interesting read, but not too surprising. Its pretty well known how sales person and bloggers get incentives from Samsung, by promoting, selling and always being positive about their products. This isn't even reported by many blogs while being a pretty big news. That's a new low even for a company like samsung.

Here's an interesting read too:

http://int13.net/france/blog/[....]o-to-the-london-olympic-games/

The weird experiences of a French blogger, active since 2010 as a "brand ambassador" for an unnamed Korean electronics company, sponsoring the Olympics in London (wonder, which company that was ?), and the "lucky" winner of a trip to the Games.

If a company foots a large bill like that, then it's usually expected and it would be the bloggers fault for assuming otherwise... BUT if the bloggers were given a choice, and made it clear from the start that they were NOT going as brand ambassadors, then the fault goes to Samsung. Whatever was agreed on should have been followed.

@jplacson

Clinton Jeff stated several times, he'd only be going as a reporter, not a a promoter, as you can clearly read in the first post, and in the linked article.

The French blogger otoh, had been a brand ambassador for two years, still, when you read the article, they've been treated like prisoners, instead of guests, on this trip they had "won".

@marly,

That sucks, luckily it seems a couple of them have started to out this mafia like activity. But, unfortunately many of the blogs will not even cover this issue. I feel this sort of activity is one of the reasons, why there is always a +ve article regarding that specific korean company. Sometimes its too evident with some of the major ones.

@jplacson,
Please read the article. They were winners of a contest, they did not beg to be taken. Just because you won something doesnt mean you become a slave. As a reporter he would have still covered the samsung launch, and probably be pretty positive for this "gift". They would still get all the positive advertisements, from supposedly real life "unbiased" people.

Anyways here's the reply by samsung

Two replies actually. One for the public, and one only for him.

Funny, had the Fruit Company been the culprit, this thread would've had at least two pages by now, with iHaters expressing how angry and disgusted they were, using smilies like and , but they don't seem to bother now.

As unpleasant as this has been for the bloggers, there's one good thing: we have learned what many of the super-positive reviews Samsung products recieved from tech-blogs in the past few years are worth. A city-trip and/or some other goodies for the reviewer.

@djin, marly yes I read the article which is why I stated that.

Had they just assumed they were not brand ambassadors, it would've been their fault... but since they had been given a choice, and they stated their intentions from the start, it is Samsungs's fault. Whatever was agreed on prior to the incident should've been followed.

Update on the incident:

I have respect for Nokia. Good for them. (Even if they didn't adopt Android)
