Portfolio Website - Esato archive

Good morning, I have been toying with the idea of creating a portfolio site for a while now. The domain name allaboutandrew sounds catchy, but does AndrewBrownbsc sound better?

Also the site would be for an IT, website creation and SEO job. So I would probably have to spend a long time on it.

I currently have a job, but want to look for a higher job. Do you think a website portfolios help these days? Or are they a waste of a lot of money. Any advice helps!

Hey man,

I'm actually just readying my own portfolio/personal site and was asking myself the same questions you are.

I decided to make my site not just about my portfolio of recent web design/build projects and entrepreneurial startups but to also include things that back up my more worldly side.

So I've gone for a blog type format categorising posts into 'projects' and 'travel' and I'll probably make another category of 'ideas' or something like that. This way I can direct potential clients to the portfolio and they can browse my artistic shots of Everest from basecamp. Hopefully the quality of build of my site and my recent projects shows my skills and my travel photo albums/blog show I'm not just a geek with more spare time than I can shake a stick at, if you know what I mean.

On the other side of it, I wouldn't think that you'd be paying someone to build it if you're advertising yourself as an IT/web designer so that should be just your time and the cost of a domain and a bit of hosting should be fairly minimal, compared to possibly getting a better job.

And, if it doesn't get you your dream job, its cool to have a place to blog and to just have as your own ... and it's good practice.

Nice to hear from someone that has been in the same situation.

Yeah I know how to create a website, so I only need hosting costs.

Would probably use a Wordpress site.

Might give it a whirl for a few years and see how I go.

Love your site. Almost instant loading of the photos are very nice. The XMLHttpRequest method is a nice way to load new content, but really miss the possibility to go back in the browser history. Maybe a history plugin for jQuery could help you out.

Thanks for your kind words, a jQuery history plugin sounds like a great idea. I'm still tidying the layout for now, but thanks again for the suggestion. It'll certainly be considered in future evolution.
