Sony Xperia S thread

Sony Xperia S announced
Sony Xperia S seems to be a smaller version of the Sony Xperia Ion without the LTE high speed connectivity. And for those not tied up with AT&T in the US, Sony offers the same content package in a smaller package. Where the Xperia Ion has a huge 4.6 inch display, the Xperia S has a smaller 4.3 inch display but with the same 720x1280 HD resolution. A 1.5 GHz dual core processor should be enough for everyone for the next few years

Sony has increased the camera megapixels from 8 to 12. Very few smartphones can offer such a high number of megapixel count. Out my head, I can only think of Samsung Pixon 12, Sony Ericsson Satio and of course the legendary Nokia N8. All these produced excellent image quality, and we can just hope the 12 megapixels sensor in the Sony Xperia S will do the same.

Sony Xperia S highlights

  • Size: 128 x 64 x 10.6 mm
  • Weight: 144 gram
  • 4.3 inch Reality display, 720 x 1280 pixel resolution, Mobile Bravia Engine
  • Networks: GSM/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900, UMTS/HSPA 850/900/1900/2100
  • Wi-Fi b/g/n
  • 12.1 megapixel camera, Sony Exmor-R sensor, Fastest Capture feature to take shots in 1.5 seconds, geo tagging, smile shutter, face recognition
  • 1080p video capture - main camera
  • 720p video capture - front camera
  • 1.5 GHz dual core processor
  • Wi-Fi
  • DLNA
  • Bluetooth
  • NFC
  • aGPS
  • FM radio
  • USB
  • HDMI
  • 3.5 mm audio jack
  • Standby time: 450 hours
  • Talk time: 7 hours 30 minutes
  • Playstation Certified
  • Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Upgradable to Ice Cream Sandwich durind Q2 2012
  • Available in white and black

FINALLY! THE PERFECT XPERIA PHONE!

This has everything I wanted in a phone.

Though other Sony Ericsson Xperia phone are cool, it's always leave you wanting more features avaible in other Xperia models.

THE "XPERIA S", what a beauty!

It looks great as usual and the UI is stunning! however i find the sony logo too big I'll miss the digital-sans font on

I missed Xenon flash so much, if this had it, it'll compete for the cameraphone ultimacy

Posted by winnerzero
Gonna get this phone for sure, what a sexy beast....the white one made me change my mind that white phones look weird...dammit, n I only just upgraded to the arc s but I simply have to have the first Sony branded phone...I also wanted the very last Sony Ericsson phone...

So which of the following disadvantages are present and which are not:

1. Not-Swappable battery
2. No MicroSD
3. microSIM?

Posted by SKIBBE
Will it support the mkv-container with hw-accel? If not it's as bad as the Arc... decode x264 in software is not fast.
everything else looks stunning thou

Yeah, hate the 'Sony' logo, not a cutting edge font at all

Sealed battery and no micro SD? Like a mother...ckn iPhone!!!!!

Is it confirmed as being quad-band HSDPA?

It's a pain having 2 different models on the market in Australia.

Taken from SE site
"Memory card slot: 32 GB eMMC
Internal phone storage: 1 to 1.5 GB
RAM: 1 GB "

It's hard to say if the card is removable or just embeded in the phone. Judging from very low info, this phone probably supports microSD but it's not removable, fail ...

eMMC = Embedded MultiMedia Card

Be aware that eMMC = Embedded (and hence non-replacable) MMC as I understand it.

From Xperia S white paper:

Internal phone storage 1-1.5 GB
Flash memory 32 GB eMMC

From Xperia ION white paper:

Internal phone storage 1-1.5 GB
Flash memory 16 GB eMMC
Expansion slot microSD, upto 32 GB

Not sure what Internal phone storage is used for (perhaps, phone book and such stuff).

Internal Phone Storage is used for Applications and their data, phonebook, and Messages.

The phone is totally brilliant but why these stupid solutions.
Non removable battery is a total letdown!!!!

And what about memory than, I hope those embedded cards will still supporr USB transfer like before.

Get used to it. We will probably see more of this in future from various vendors I guess. Personally i have never had to replace a battery on any phone I have had so far (I'm usually using mine around 5 years on average).

Don't see any reason why they would not support USB transfer. We shall see in due course.

I like this phone, I don't like the name it is not only boring but also doesn't make sense in that the S on the Xperia line is meant to signify an upgrade in specs such as the arc to arc s. In this case it isn't signifying anything; there hasn't been a Sony Ericsson Xperia!

Also with this name I can just imagine the pain of searching anywhere whether it be ebay, google or youtube the words 'sony xperia s' and getting a whole load of results on the xperia arc s! It was the same when trying to look for the xperia mini pro and continually finding the x10 mini pro...

Also this baby is one chunky dude!

Not complaining though because I do think the slim race has become crazy and is hopefully over for now...

short review on Russian
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHYDTw_U8xQ

keynotes:
- praise the build quality and design (white look great in his opinion)
- really sharp and good display without seeng the pixels at all
- nice customization on top of Android (show music player with unique equalizer we already seen)
- fast camera (1 second is actually the time to make the shot without unlocking the phone, just point and shoot. He compered it with SGS2)

I was kinda impressed

I never get Sony they get everything almost right then mess it up with no ungradable memory but no removable battery is no big deal. I would like the thought of having 32 gig memory and sd card upto 64 gig surely that's the future. Not stupid iphone internal memory.

The way to do that is to use the search term: "sony xperia s -arc" and it will not bring up anything with the word 'arc' in the title.

Simples!

Let the trend be your friend. Non removable items seems to be the future (not the other way around) whether you like it or not.

Well that's true, but what if the phone fails. It happened quite a few times with my X10, simple solution to reset, was to remove and put back in battery, it was breaking the power to the phone. How in the world will You do that now? Is there a micro hole that is taking care of resets (You will have to carry a needle in pocket, no big deal...)? Or are Sony stupid enough to not even provide that, then I have no question about future of Sony

And non-removable battery seems to have (A little bit) of sense when the back cover is not removable (like on iPhone). But if You have to deal with all disadvantages of removable cover, why embed the battery? No idea. Also the phone is BIG, it's not the thinnest, not the smallest. So how in the world they couldn't fit normal battery?

On the old X10 devices, holding down both the power button and the home button simultaneously would do the trick (perform a reset). I'm sure these one have a similar feature. X10 mini had non-removable battery and I haven't seen anyone having any problem that would require remove of the battery. While non-removable battery may be an issue in few cases, for the majority I would guess it is a non-issue.

I guess not having removable parts make it more easy to assemble the device and make it more sturdy (less things to rattle and break).

X10 mini had a key combo to hard reset the phone, in addition to that reset button.

But why is internal memory gonna be the future?? Where is the logic?? The cards are so small now you can fit them into any device, you can easily move memory about and never lose it if the phone fails. You can upgrade it further but if it is gonna be the future they need to start thinking about higher than 32 gigs.

I swear if they give us anymore of pea-sized internal memory phones like Arc S that's slows down to an unbelievably pathetic crawl after merely 70-80 apps due to low internal memory I'm gonna make it my personal vendetta to advice everyone I know against Sony phones. I'm tired of their nonsense, as if having a good sized internal space is some crazy far-fetched idea

Well if the memory is non removable the whole memory management will probably look like on WP7 and iOS - everything will be available for apps. You will not worry about it....

The question is rather what about the USB support.

Posted by motvikt
I wonder what they did with all the extra space they got in xperia S compared to arc. Xperia S is a pretty big phone, pretty fat too . I thought non-removable battery and micro-sim would make it smaller. The battery isnt that much bigger either

Ahh! I feel stupid for not realising that, but thank you this will bring great easy to me

Posted by moogoo
wow.. i wake up to all these complaints about embedded battery and non-expandable memory...

my thoughts are embedded battery is no big deal. there are other ways to hard reset if necessary. as far as non-expandable memory is concerned, i would have preferred to have the ability to purchase my own microSD and choose my size, but eh, it's no big deal. 32GB is plenty for me.. that on top of cloud storage (I use google music exclusively for music on the go and dropbox, box, picasa for other files and photos) i don't see the real need to have more than 32GB. Perhaps if you're carrying more than 32GB of data on your phone at any point in time, you need to be more organized with your files? heh.. i kid.

In regards to the comments that the Xperia S isn't that thin... I think it's perfect thickness. It seems slightly thinner than the X10 from the photos and that's fine by me. I think it'd be easier to handle/hold than a razor thin phone. In addition, I'd rather have a uniform thickness than a thin phone with a bulge at the camera.

Reasons I think it's not super thin:
- 12mp camera (they have to fit all that goodness in there somehow)
- large battery (yes it's embedded but it's a larger capacity. 1750mah battery in a phone roughly the same size as the x10)
- other doodads and thinamajiggers they needed to fit in there
- overall design philosophy

BTW... other than Rog, has anyone heard or read that the xperia S will have magnesium body? from the pics, the black one seems to have a matte back. Haven't seen much of the white ...

Fat ? It's already 10.6 mm thick for god sake. How thin do you want it ?

Maybe not mAh wise, but what has that to do with the physical size of the battery ?

Posted by Bonovox
I got no issue with the battery thing but I do with no micro SD

no 2 hour 1080p video recording sessions for bonovox

Posted by Bonovox
I hope the video recording becomes as good as the recent crop of Sony cameras on the market. They are really good but they better make the camera good!! Shame cos I think the design of the Ion is nicer than the Xperia S. Strange thing is the US version gets SD slot but not this one

looks like it's confirmed the LED light strip changes color depending on the need. i was really hpoing this would be true cause that would make an awesome light effect for notifications and such.

still haven't found any information on the material...

@Bonovox

I think S is nicer than Ion... Ion looks like many other android phones. It's very generic. S is much more unique in style. lack of SD card slot kinda sucks, but that's what cloud storage is for

At sonyericsson.no it says: Memory : Memory card slot: 32 GB eMMC

Posted by adsada
The new UXP that they're talking about on both the ion and s, think it will come to the 2011 phones? I have a feeling it wont is there any confirmation on this? Also in the video above it seems that they scraped the current camera layout! It's now got a standard silver button like other android phones... that is a shame as the current interface is so good.

Posted by Bonovox
If the hardware can handle the update then why not??

Posted by adsada
Because the new Xperia range announced is called the 'NXT series' and they talk about the interface of this series being the UXP look. They probably want to differentiate this series and so wont update the 2011 range...

hope I am wrooooooong!

Posted by Bonovox
We shall see I guess Sony will want to keep their older Xperia owners happy for a while like they did last year. They did well last year on update promises.
