WWDC today showed a preview of iOS 5. Here are some of the key new features out of the 200+ that have been added.

It'll be available in Autumn but the SDK is available to developers from today

The camera button/shutter thing is a really good move (esp on the lockscreen). Shame it's not a proper mechanical shutter replacement, but maybe that will come in the next iphone.

One of the 200 iOS 5 enhancements:
"Your inbox is about to receive some great new features. Format text using bold, italic, or underlined fonts."

The new iOS 5 comes with more than 200 features. Amongst all features, I like the most is its PC free. Now no need to connect any Apple devices whether it is iPhone, iPad or iPod. I am really excited for iOS 5.

The notification system has been done very well, reminds me of the Palm Pre in a way, pretty clever integration with the lock screen too.
I don't like the twitter integration, yeah it's great i you use it, but a waste of time and space if like me you don't and probably never will. I'm also concerned if the auto setup PC free will lead to Sim free devices?
Anyway, as usual with Apple, good and bad things. Someone also noted that the LED flash will light for notifications too? Really can't see the point in that one, if you do that then stick a proper notification LED in it, especially at the iPhones price!

I didn't like the twitter integration either, but it does seem unobtrusive unless you actually want to use it. much like the MMS, mail, sms options.

my last 2 iphones, and my ipads, have been sim free as I bought them from Apple, but I suspect the carrier supplied ones will still come locked.

haha, what I meant was that the rumor about Apple's devices not needing a sim at all may come true from all this, the sim being built into the device itself.

And yeah, the mail I neer bother with, but the camera features mean I can ditch my camera apps, the MMS and SMS are very good. But when you watch the keynote some of the features were iPad exclusive like the tabbed browsing i have an iPhone.

It reminds me of Intelliscreen, looks like people wont need that anymore.

Been using it for 2 days on ipad 1 and iphone 4...my veredict? Itīs awesome

I've been holding off until the next beta version due to the many comments on the developer forum

have you really had no issues at all?

Posted by ares
I canīt say thereīs no issues...some apps might not work (like pixelpipe on the iphone), but most do, namely the ones i use most. Also, sometimes you can get a random crash, but theyīre not frequent, at all, and everything else works has it should, namely the new features like notifications, icloud backup, etc...Battery has also not been much worse on the ip4, and on the ipad i donīt see any difference at all. I say, try it, specially because you can downgrade.

Iīve had all my iphones (3g, 3gs, now 4) and ipad jailbroken almost all the time, but iīm not missing that right now, and iīm determined to go through all the beta testing period withou downgrading, specially because next upgrades might come has OTA Delta upgrades (not the entire firmware will be replaced has it was usual in iOS)

Posted by masseur
I've been running for a few days and it is a fairly stable beta. Sadly the two main apps (Train times, NextBus) that I use for my commute no longer work, so I've bought the android equivalents for my SGS2

The notifications are certainly an improvement but what I don't like is that when you have unread notifications, there's nothing visible on the task bar to show you that, which kind of misses the point.

There's alot more config in there, though mostly for new features like iCloud, OTA upgrade, Synchronise etc.

btw, Synching while still being able to use the device is good. I'll look forward to them enabling the wifi sync.

Reminders are nice, though I was happy using the calendar or alarms, but location reminders really make this worthwhile (i.e. when you're getting old like me and go somewhere and then forget why you're there - where's Tranquil!)

still testing...

beta 2 is a big improvement and alot more stable. The apps that didn't work on beta 1 are once again working on beta 2 and there's more features working now too

the final product is going to be a huge update that I'm sure will make most idevice owners pretty happy.

two things dissapoint me though. tabs are only available in Safari on the iPad, not on the iPhone.

Also, the notification pull down notifications should be available on the lock screen without unlocking the phone, and there really needs to be an indicator on the top so you know there is an unread notification

Posted by fbloise
I'm using 4.3.1 and I like they way hackers are implementing Os 5.0 features in 4.3 phones..

I'm using the camera button in the lock screen and is very handy.

I thought Safari in the iPhone always had tabs Mass? Is that tabs as in browser windows?

Posted by masseur
previously, on the ipad and iphone you had to click an icon which gave a mini view of each page. On the ipad you could see all open pages at once in the mini view. On the iphone you scroll sideways to find the page you want.

Ipad now has tabs which look the same as you see on your pc browser across the top of whatever page you have open. This gives quicker access to each page you have open without all this mini page view nonesense.

Unfortunately iOS 5 on iPhone still does it the old way.

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Ah yes, i see what you mean, the Android1.6 web browser was similar, it could only show 3 mini pages and you had to scroll through them if the one you want is the last one.

Posted by masseur
OTA is available now for the latest beta 4 upgrade

Also, wifi sync now works on windows iTunes!

after some days use now, and having finally put iOS 5 on my iPad, I feel this is getting close to gold and am now thinking about the iPhone 5.

They really have to make 64gb version after the 3GS and 4 max was 32gb. I am constantly struggling with capacity issues with all the video podcasts I watch combined with my music and music video collection.

Having used the Galaxy S2 for a month a slightly larger screen won't hurt either.

Other than that, the iOS 5 offerings are really meeting my needs now and I can't think of much else I could use, oh, except perhaps a radio if it is usable as most radio's in phones are rubbish in my experience when on the move such as commutting on a train.

anyone else have other thoughts for iOS 5 or iPhone 5?

Would like to see
-3.7inch retina display.
-HDMI Out/MHL
-8MP Camera
-64GB mem
-Similar curved rear cover like 3GS, but it must be glass like iPhone4.
-and an even larger battery e.g. 1600mAh should be possible.

Think some of the above is guaranteed in the iP5.

HDMI out is already available via a standard cable, so built in HDMI is only a minor requirement for me.

8MP camera is fairly assured based on rumour, as is A4 dual core (ala ipad 2) processor.

I do like the glass front and back but apparantly many people are dropping the iphone 4 and this seems to be the first to break and so it is suspected to be replaced in the iPhone5, unfortunately. I'd prefer to keep the glass and let people take more care of their iPhones!

more battery power is always welcome so I agree with you there. but until we get atomic powered device ( ), enough will never be enough!

I am wondering, how will be with charger in the iPhone. As we know Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Apple and other companies declared that from 2011? all chargers pin will be the same.

Those using iOS5 illegaly, Apple are after you: http://www.redmondpie.com/app[....]age-closes-developer-accounts/

Posted by masseur
I always decline requests on here or elsewhere to provision other peoples iOS devices, even though the dev licence provides for up to 100 devices.

I wouldn't want to take that risk

Masseur,

knowing Apple supports its devices well and quicker then other manufacturers some of the time,
when is i05 getting its full proper release any ideas? intresting to see how my iPod touch will become after it

Posted by masseur
I'm sorry but I have no privvy knowledge on this matter.

I could only possibly speculate once the iOS 5 goes gold as release is usually a week or two after that.

we're expected iOS 5 beta 6 in the next 24 hours or so suggesting gold is at least 2 weeks away

Hmm Ok maybe Apple are sorting there phone out so that can arrive fresh and funky on the scene
first with it ...

I do hope iOS 5 is nicer then the current 4 im merely bored by it in terms I rather not download any
apps just use that iPod as a Music device only lol

Posted by masseur
er, I'm certain iPhone 5 will come with iOS5 so it will certainly be "fresh and funky on the scene", if thats what it is called!

there are certainly already plenty of apps that don't need ipod as music device

Posted by Miss UK
The iPod 4g Mass is a iPhone 5 without the phone,
All im saying is ive not used it for those App avantages,
Just use it for my purpose which is my own music and podcasts
Of itunes.

The apps I use are on my 2x Android phones hence not using the iPod,
Be great to get iO5 on it though maybe it will make me use it for other stuff

i hope the 5 does come with 64gb i can't imagine if they added 1080p to the camera the recorded videos will eventually hog up all the memory......

Not not bad iOS 5 took me abit to get it on though
must of been a big backlog of ppl updating it off the server

So far, I'm liking iOS 5. Quite a few refinements that I felt should've been done a while back... But I also know why they didn't.

iCloud doesn't interest me one bit since I'm a Google fan, but I do think it's leaps and bounds better than that sad service called MobileMe. For people that have trouble doing Google Apps, iCloud will be the next best thing.

The native tabbed browsing is by far, the best improvement and the one I'm so happy about.

For those of you using the new Facebook iPad app, you can get the same experience on your android by going to m.facebook.com instead of using the android app.

The new notifications bar is nice too, but still not as integrated or as sleek as android's but a great addition nonetheless.

I can't recall if Apple allows you to 'skip over' updates. You may have to update to 4.3.5 first before it will show the iOS 5 update.

Posted by c_vignesh
Thanks for the replies...when i checked for the update again it said iOS 5 was available so now i've put it for download (668 MB ..whew ....it will take a while ) ....hope iOS 5 doesn't slow down my iPhone 3GS or crashes it in anyway

Posted by masseur
@jplacson, no. you can always upgrade to the latest no matter how far behind you are

Posted by Bonovox
I remember when i had the iphone 4 the update file was very large. Would have come in handy now as i have the high speed 3 dongle.
