Orange have unveiled a new Android smart phone made by ZTE the San Srancisco for £99 running on Android 2.1. It features a 3.5 OLED capacitive touch screen,3.2 mega pixel camera with auto focus,Wi Fi etc & has a resemblance to a HTC phone. This is all for a mere £99 on pay & go & is now one of the many growing number of budget Android devices coming onto the market. See it here http://www.recombu.com/reviews/orange/san-francisco/ I am wondering what the screen res is at that size but I am not really into Android no more & this will have Orange branding all over it How come these companies can release such 2.1 devices at such a cheap price yet dither over updates

Because they're cheap handsets, worth around £9, the other £90 is for the Android licence ?

Why can SE do not do the same ? come on this is SE you're talking about, an old fashioned scared of change stick in the mud kinda company.

Posted by Bonovox
£9?? When you see the photo of the phone it looks like it says Sony Ericsson on the top of the handset

Could it be that when SE began developing the UXP UI they only had 1.6 to work with, and so they made it for 854x480, Snapdragon hardware mix, 320x480, MSM hardware mix and 240x320, MSM hardware mix, all based on 1.6, put together the fact they are under resourced, and at the time low on cash they were not able to work on 2.1 at the time, i dont know, maybe im wrong.

Posted by Bonovox
Then why are their new models coming out like the X8 still not 2.1 or 2.2??

Posted by Tsepz_GP
I was refering to the X8 when i said 320x480, they worked on all of them at once as they all use UXP, and then released them as they finished, so they must have started at X10, then the Minis then the X8, they wanted to make a bang with the X10. They basicaly did it backwards compared to the other manufacturers. e.g Moto started of with mid to low ends THEN they brought the flagship Milestone, Samsung did the same with the Spica, then Galaxy S, this is all just from what im seeing, i could be wrong,it just seems SE's timing and strategy was not in sync with Google's OS update intervals like the manufacturers were.

Not sure the screen res of this Orange Google phone but I did see a video of it somewhere but I forgot where. It looked sharp anyway & at 3.5 inches it must be high res. Also I wonder what's powering it CPU wise & ram??

OK I tried to do the link to the video on Softpedia but it would not work This is a screen shot anyway OK just found out it runs on a 600mhz processor probably some cheap one unsure of battery.UPDATE: Screen res is 480x800

Is this the LG optimus? Sold in Holland for €139

Posted by Bonovox
No it's not LG

Posted by etaab
Lots of speculation but the answers are already there.

Its made by ZTE Corp, a chinese telecoms manufacturer. Ive heard of them before. See link.

And a video of the phone here.

Posted by Bonovox
Like HTC they are from far east

Posted by etaab
ZTE is a well known company over there. My sister had a ZTE phone when she worked in Japan. Then a DoCoMo, the first colour screen mobile phone id ever seen sometime back in 2000 / 01.

Im actually tempted by this San Francisco, ive used Android quite alot in recent months but never owned such a device.

Posted by Bonovox
I won't go Android again for reasons I would rather not debate but it is a great phone for the money. Lets hope the phone itself is good. What concerns me about Orange is for £5 per month you can get 250mb of data as an extra. But only on Dolphin or Monkey tariffs(stupid names) & if you get the free internet on top when you top up it's a paltry 100mb per MONTH. Come on Orange wakey wakey now surely you should know Android devices EAT data

I would never use such a phone as my main phone, i always prefer top end phones. So instead of debating, why not list why you wouldnt go with Android again ?

Posted by Bonovox
No cos it's not the topic

Posted by phonecrzy
Well it still beats the ZTE Racer and Huawei Ideos, which are both pure garbage. At least by the looks of it is better than the T-Mobile Pulse and Pulse Mini, which makes the phone pretty good

It does indeed but lets hope it's reliable & of good software & hardware. Good battery life with decent performance overall. By the looks of the video the screen looks responsive

Posted by phonecrzy
...but it looks plasticy, crap and unstable. So I'm good with a Samsung Monte instead for only £20-£30 more even if the Monte does only have TouchWiz UI 2.0 its still better than Android filled with garbage orange branding. If I was orange I would rather price this £30 instead for its poor quality.

Posted by weirdwilli
How does it look buggy or look unusable. It's running on similar, or better specs than last year's high end Android crowd.
Would much rather get this, wait for the brilliant XDA community to jump to it, then install a vanilla ROM than get a TouchWiz phone.
Android is the future, and it wouldn't surprise me if this phone started a wave of cheap devices.

Oh, and I find it absuluty amazing you can LOOK at something and say its crap, don't judge a book by its cover. Ever

Agreed, and agreed
The guys over at XDA will have this suited, booted, and rooted near enough straight away

How can you tell it looks buggy & unstable from a 1:36 video The screen looked responsive & it's made of plastic yes but you have not held one have you? So how can you say it looks plasticky?? Every phone in a photo which is plastic can look just plastic

But bono, why don't you like Android, what went wrong, I have never known a person put a bad name to it?

Posted by Lightspeed_x
+1... ???

Posted by Bonovox
For goodness sake we are talking about THIS phone not my Android annoyances Anyway @phonecrzy how can you compare this to Samsung Monte Touchwiz?? The Samsung is not anywhere near what this phone can do. I think it will spark alot of cheap Android devices but some people are not happy about that I read somewhere

It was meant as a joke / sarcasm.

But its your thread, you can change the topic anytime you like !

So please let us know your dislikes !

Anyway, this phone like all the other cheap mid to low range phones coming out is meant for people who want to dip their toe into the Android OS without having to pay for a top end smartphone. Its a good move by Android !

You're clearly not getting the hang of this huh ?!

Posted by Bonovox
I am taking the p**s mate I just cannot be arsed to discuss why I no longer like Android & I am not changing the topic it's about this cheap Orange phone.FULL STOP.

Posted by hihihans
Hmm. I am not an Android fan, because I don't want google to know everything about me. I know that all I do is saved somewhere no-matter what brand, OS or operator I use, but to give it to a company. . . No-way.
Here in Holland lots of stores have customer-cards to get discount, this way they track your buying habit. I use these cards to get that discount but share it with other people to confuse the company's. I like my privacy.
On the other hand £99 is tempting to check out the Android-operating-system.

How about this?

Posted by Bonovox
That is a decent phone that is

Posted by etaab
Its just too much like a Satio in the way it looks for my liking.

I tried one in the O2 shop near me and it was nice but the screen was rather small. Or at least seemed to be.

Surely if you use Android you dont have to use it for too much of Google's services ? i dont think id ever link it to my Gmail account or store my contacts online, or use Google's Calendar.

Posted by Bonovox
Actually the LG Optimus having had one before is a super fast phone. Not just in operation but internet too. I would not call 3 inch screen small.

Posted by weirdwilli
Not small, but lacking, with a lesser resolution than the San Francisco, .5" smaller diagonally, and with resistive touch rather than capacitive.
Would go for the Orange any day over it. It's already been rooted apparently, have yet to research it further though.

Posted by Bonovox
The resistive screen on the LG was one of the more responsive resistive type & the phone was very fast no lag anywhere. Screen is the same as the X8 res on the LG & it did look good. I find the bigger & higher res screens with even a 1 gig processor I still find you still get lag. I found it on the X10,Galaxy i9000 but zero lag on the 600mhz lower res screens of the LG Optimus & X10 Mini.

Posted by etaab
I meant the screen is small compared to the rest of the phones body. Most modern phones have large screens that cover most of the front of the phone. Not so with the Optimus. The screen only covers about 50-60% of the front of the phone.

Posted by Bonovox
It's going off topic now too much & this conversation is getting boring now

Posted by etaab
Well you know Esato is very quiet these days compared to years ago so i think its ok to talk abit if the topic deviates slightly.

You also seem very touchy (imo) !

Posted by Bonovox
No not touchy just everything goes off topic too much & it gets messy plus we are already discussing Symbian elsewhere at the moment

Posted by etaab
Everybody is discussing (slagging off) Symbian elsewhere in many threads at the moment. Its rather annoying when the bigger minority think they know better, but really cannot force their negative opinions onto you when you and only you know what you like, prefer or need.

We need to keep Esato alive ! so who do you think will win this years X-factor ? btw, i just saw a X-factor pizza in Asda, how does that work !?!

Posted by Bonovox
X FACTOR??

I have used one, it was more unstable than an J132 and had cheap plastic casing like the BB Curve 8520. Every mobile looks responsive when on video but when I was using the phone it was terrible!! the phone was slow. In my life I will never purchase such a peice of CRAP. theres nothing good to it.

Posted by Bonovox
You have used the Orange San Francisco phone that's not even out yet?? @luke it was not me who went off topic about X Factor

Biggest load of bollox I've ever heard. Remember the first few X10 videos released onto the 'net?
Oh yeah, the phone looked sluggish...
How can you compare an Android phone to a J132?
It's running ANDROID, the SAME OS AS ABOUT 100 DIFFERENT MODELS, just with a light skin overhauled ontop. And if it is as bad as you say, then I'm sure anyone browsing this forum has the brain capacity and knowledge to be able to install a vanilla ROM, even if it does require a new thread and an hour or two of research.
