Are there any phones out there that record video in full HD 1080p?

My Samsung Galaxy S i9000 can record video in 1280x720 resulations. Is that called 1080p? I'm not sure.

No it's called 720p, the iPhone 4 also does 720p and the upcoming HTC Evo will also have 720p, all of these are half HD, not full HD, according to this we'll have to wait till the second quarter of 2011 before we see it

Once you find a phone that can record at 1080p then better also check the bitrate. Blu-ray max bitrate is 40mbps and DVD is 9mbps. Don't expect a phone with limited (and usually quite slow) flash memory to reach close to the bitrate of even DVD. That means poor quality video with compression artifacts and lack of detail when you watch your recorded video on a 1080p-capable display.

Pretty sure the new keiteis record in full 1080p

Thanks all

Every mobile so far that's recorded in HD that I have seen has been piss poor imo. Poor audio too but the best I have seen so far was the Samsung Galaxy although no it's not full HD. Even most compact digital cameras produce quite often very poor HD recording with poor mono sound & sometimes I often wonder if it really is HD

Is it all up to the write speed of the devices and memory cards then? If so can we say that once the manufacturers manage to get faster write speeds then we will have more and more 1080p HD phones or rather genuine 1080p HD phones?

Framerate is more important than resolution IMO, 30+ looks good, anything around 20 looks awful and choppy.

The processing power needed for high bitrate, high resolution, high frame rate video is probably too much stress on the battery for the makers to allow. Expect compromises.

I'd rather choose a phone can shoot excellent DVD quality (576i) than crappy 720p or 1080p.

Yes but we are also talking about having your phone shoot HD videos along with its myriad of other features. Certainly if you were going to an event where you needed top quality video recording and resolution you should walk with camera instead of a phone.

For now though we are dealing with what the phones can handle without being plugged into a wall socket.

Alot of HD recordings are @24fps in mobiles of late.

Mostly the first sets of phones to come out with HD recording. Iphone4, Samsung Galaxy are 30fps.

As far as I know Desire HD and Galaxy S. iPhone/iTouch, Vivaz, etc. record in 720p.

And 30fps like the Vivaz.

Seriously if you want real HD video then buy a proper HD camcorder. Not even dedicated digital cameras produce that good HD video but getting a proper camcorder is the only real way of anything decent

Not everyone requires proper HD, for some phone HD quality is enough.

Hmmm, but on my pc I have a HDMI connection & a HD camera Fuji & even that looks poor nowhere near HD.

well, my customised omnia hd can shoot 'hd' at 29fps..not bad for old hardware..the hd's sharper details in video than my galaxy S. Quite surprising..

Hey JJ, I have the Omnia HD but never realised that with HYper X's software it could achieve 29frames per second. Are you certain?

its what it says when i look at the details of a vid record'd by my hd m8.

Thanks JJ. Was just checking not disputing it. Thanks

no problem buddy..

OK having just recently bought an iphone 4 I can say for sure so far it has the best HD recording I have seen on a mobile. The Galaxy was before but not now. It's smooth & clear even on a big screen & the audio is so clear in nice stereo unlike most in mono

Oh well, we can add the next Xperia and the next Samsung Flagship to the list now

Posted by Indiandawg
At what framerate does Xperia HD records video?

Posted by jj03
I completely disagree with bono. My mrs has an iphone4 and the hd recording certainly isnt as good as the galaxy S.. On topic..i know it doesnt, but apparently the galaxy S hardware is quite capable of recording 1080p video.

Posted by skblakee
Any N8 owners want to add their piece in comparison?

On topic, there was a recent rumour on phonearena and gsmarena that spoke of a Samsung flagship coming out Q1 2011 that records in 1080p. Is it safe to say then 1080p is the next big thing on phones and it is here (almost)?

Posted by jj03
Well, with the introduction of dual core in the first half of next year (you know it'll be from samsung) 1080P recording will be with us for sure.

24fps is fine for me,but 30fps is a lot better.some handycams have mods for 60,120,and up to 1200 fps(but the quality is crap and it is cropped)
