Ok thought I would start this as no official thread on this handset and owners is on this forum...

Got mine yesterday and up to now i'm liking it! Its not that big and the 32Gb memory is great of course!

Software wise I think Maemo is a future hit once some kinks are worked out. I have installed Maku, Pidgen Instant Messenger, Bounce, and a couple of other enhancement packages...

Tonight i'm going to try getting Debian to install on some of the 48Gb memory currently available (i stuck my 16Gb micro SD in it!) and see what fun i can have!

Anyone else on here have one and any tips to further enhance it?

J.

Congrats on your purchase. So its good then? I just read a What Mobile review of it giving it 3 stars

Posted by voda_jon
from what i've used over the last 2 days it does the job... not had any probs with it though.

i read a load of different reviews and decided to go with it anyway lol.

I sold my iPhone 3GS 32GB and bought the N900 with plenty of cash left. So far very happy with the change. The only thing I miss is an Office suite for editing my Word and Excel files: waiting for the release of the free KOffice.

Ive got one too John , again very happy with it at present, hence the reason for trying to trade my Milestone (dont need two phones with qwerty keyboard ). I agree with you that some things need to be ironed out, the phone part of the handset does feel as if it is an afterthought at first and takes some getting used to. Apart from that Maemo is very good to use. I would imagine with some Linux knowledge it would be even better

@lemmy. yeh am lookin at developing some stuff for it. looking at doing a facebook app or widget that lets me update status without goin the main fb site... and possibly a better news reader for the homescreen.

Go for it Jon, developing programs would be far too advanced for my limited knowledge

i saw on gizmodo today that some fella has managed to dual boot the n900, both maemo and android. thats fantastic...

Posted by Bonovox
I read in What Mobile thread that Nokia are going to work on the phone part and iron out other things. They are aware of it.

@jj03.... yeh saw that too and its lookin great... full android AND maemo will make this a killer device!!!

Posted by voda_jon
and this is my desktop... well one page of it... the other 3 pages have web links, contact links and some CPU/MEMORY monitoring apps on it...

for those who need an office suite, I recommend installing Easy debian chroot from the extra repository (this is a stable package now), which gives you access to a FULL DEBIAN DISTRIBUTION in 800x600px

The complete open office suite work (slowly, like on my eeepc 900 for example), but if you install "abiword" and "gnumerics" via the synaptic package manager (which is familiar to ubuntu users), you have a complete office suite and desktop experience (since they are exactly the same programs as on a desktop computer)

It's been 3 months now, and I LOVE my N900

Ok i just played with a live one of these in a Vodafone store. Its nicer and smaller than i thought. Very very nice product

i av now had this for a whole week so here is an update on how i am finding the phone!

Well... its fantastic still! i've been trying out different apps and finding some great things to do with the phone!

Since last update i have uninstalled Maku (twitter client) and installed Witter which is much much better. I have installed angry birds game which is brilliant too.

Can i just say as well that using the internet on this device is great! on par if not better than using my iPhone 3G.

I can see myself using this phone for a long time!!!!

And finally i have installed the Maemo.org theme which imho is the nicest looking theme!

oooh i have found the geekiest memory/processor monitoring program ever created for a mobile phone!!! here is a screenshot from my N900 running Conky.

Wow

Posted by voda_jon
i know thats what i said when it loaded up first time lol... shame they dont have it as a widget, i think this on the desktop would make a great homescreen

Posted by Bonovox
Are you the only one on Esato with one i wonder?

Posted by lukechris
I could've got one of these but got my HD2 instead, don't know if I regret it not using one lol

Posted by voda_jon
lemmy has got one but is selling it...

and @luke i got the HD2 here as well but its boxed up as the N900 is really doing everything i need a phone to do and more... i love its geeky background and hopefully Android should be up and running on it at full speed soon.

Keeping hold of the HD2 until they update it with Windows Mobile 7 and then may get rid of it if it isnt upto much.

But yeh N900 is great and can only get better with SW updates and FW updates...

I dunno but the "Nokia" bit puts me off, not their biggest fan at all

Posted by voda_jon
@luke... honestly this phone is all maemo and hardly any nokia on it... the only app that looks nokia is the ovi maps app... all the other apps look like nothing on any other Nokia phone trust me... i'll pop some screenshots up to show you

Posted by voda_jon
and here are the screenshots as promised lol...

The Homescreen

Conversations app which has all sms and im chats in it.

Actual text conversation...

Phone App showing calls made etc... also works in portrait view...

The Keypad for the phone...

And finally the settings menu!

As i said above nothing like a standard Nokia.

Damn! you all are blowing my mind!!! i planned to get the N900 in august to replace my P1i (2 year phone cycle), but...but... i don't think i can resist anymore. Thanks for posting your screenshots.Cheers!

I played yesterday with a HD2 and that massive screen especially in camera mode blew me away. Though i was confused by menus don't like Windows Mobile

Are vodafone nokia n900 locked to voda or are they sold unlocked.

Posted by Marly
Are Vodafone contract phones not always unlocked, now-a-days ?
I've bought a Voda UK N97 which is unlocked.

Posted by voda_jon
@zootzoot... fully unlocked and unbranded. has a voda product code but all updates are pushed out at the same time... i am using an O2 card in my N900 and its great lol.

If anyone wants to see more screens of anything let me know an i will do my best to post them asap... and i also have the HD2 and its gathering dust at the mo as this N900 is amazin!

Whats it like playing movies on it?

Posted by AbuBasim
^^^ I can't play the DVD movies I ripped using Nero Recode for playing on my old iPhone 3GS. The codecs used by Nero are h264 for video and AAC 48kHz stereo for audio. The built-in media player can't play these files. If I instead convert the files to MPEG4 for video then these play just fine. Odd since the N900 is supposed to support the h264 codec. And the video is slightly jerky too and this is most apparent in scenes with continuous panning movement.

(The iPhone is the ultimate multimedia phone but it lacks so much in usability as a regular smartphone. Almost unusable for business purposes. I hope Nokia does something good with the Maemo platform to allow the N900 and it's successors to be good for both business and pleasure.)

Because I revived my N900 yesterday, I'll revive this thread!

Some photos from the N900, I was on my bike yesterday
Not 5 minutes from my home.

This building was a school, burned in 1944.

Same building from the outside, I was on the top floor in the 1st photo.

A nice, pure view from the road (pun intended )

A view from another road

Some from yesterday (I got the date wrong on the phone, all from yesterday)
