iPhone 3GS discussion

we should separate out the 3GS discussion from the other announcements at WWDC 2009

so, are we happy with the new iphone? 7.2mbit HSDPA, 3megapixel auto focus camera, 32gb, os 3.0 etc etc?

I know I am!
not worried about lack of front camera as I never do video calling anyway
video recording and editing will be a nice bonus, but is the new iphone really worth upgrading to when compared with simply updating our existing 3g to os 3.0?

edit: copied from a later post in this topic

its on the O2 store now

payg
iPhone 3G 8GB - £342.50
iPhone 3G S 16GB - £440.40
iPhone 3G S 32GB - £538.30

Who was first with tap for focus? The G900 has it. Any other phone before that?

In any case, this will probably be my next phone. As soon as hardware-unlocked models show up here in the Middle East.

Posted by nicv27
All the updates for the new model are welcomed and i agree about the front facing camera but it would have been nice if it looked different cosmetically

Posted by Mizzle
I don't see what the big deal is about. Absolutely no new features.

Posted by apolloa
Epic fail IMO. Still a VERY poor camera, but also very bad pricing still. If they sold the 3Gs with 8GB ram Sim Free for a reasonable cost it may be worth it. But they aren't.
TomTom is a huge bonus but would need to see reviews about if maps are installed locally to the device etc otherwise again it's not worth it due to potential costs.

Nope, didn't bother. I knew Apple wouldn't announce anything of interest.

'Pretty much all the rumours regarding the new iPhone turned out true - the iPhone 3GS (S for Speed) has a 3 megapixel camera with video recording and a compass. The unexpected thing however is that 3GS will look exactly as the original iPhone 3G.

Beside the new VGA@30fps video recording, the auto focus camera with touch focus (and everything else automatic) and of course, the built-in compass, there are no other significant changes as compared to iPhone 3G.

The iPhone 3GS will be available as soon as 19 June 2009 in the first wave of countries and it would spread to all the 80 planned countries within a couple of months later.

The first wave will hit USA, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and UK on 19 June, while the rest of the countries will follow suite on 09 July and 09 August.

Available again in white and black, the iPhone 3GS will retail for 199 US dollars and 299 US dollars for the 16GB and 32GB version respectively.

In the same time, the iPhone 3G will continue selling at a reduced price of only 99 US dollars for the 16GB version.'

i know they havent updated it like crazy but the updates they have brought are great.... quicker net acess, better camera with smart features, better battery life and great voice controls...

thank god i have an email from O2 sayin if Apple release a new iphone before august i can return my 3g one and swap it for a new one....

Roll on the 19th!

Posted by Mr Miyagi
How long have you had your 3G iphone? I have not heard of O2 bringing out an early upgrade deal like that at all.

Luck you! I held back my upgrade being afraid that I might not get hold of the new iPhone. so If I were to get a new 3g contract tomorrow, would they give me the new iphone when its released? Im sure they'll have new tarriffs and phone prices.

Posted by londonlad123
Nothing special in my opinion.

A slightly bigger screen, fm radio and led light would have made all the difference. Some useful hardware. Not too content with a compass.

Posted by Mr Miyagi
i don't understand the need for a compass when you have GPS and google map's installed.

:S

Posted by masseur
GPS/maps are best when you're moving. When stopped, GPS can't tell you which way you're facing. The digital compass can orientate your map when you are stationary or before you set off

also, you don't always have a data connection and in that case google maps just displays a blank page. With the compass you can still navigate in straight lines in a known direction. good for orienteering.

granted though, its not the best of the new features but certainly a feature I will be using together with the tethering, voice control, landscape typing in emails etc, voice memos etc and I might even swap my polar foot sensor/HRM for the Nike offering now too

anyway, here's the 3G S page

I will be sticking with the Satio

Posted by Mr Miyagi
thanks for clearing that up masseur. What i find really good is the Find My Iphone feature I think thats pretty smart (plus i already have mobileme so yay). Especially when you can remotely delete everything. I have been looking at Apple UK website and it looks like O2 have also got the new Iphone as part of the agreement with Apple. It says coming soon on O2 on the price section of the website:

My iphone rarely leaves my hand... let alone my sight! so I doubt I will use that feature.
WM has had the remote delete for a while but never really saw a need for it myself though I do know a hell of alot of phones get left in taxi's so it will be useful for someone.

Was thinking that this may be my next phone as it is now starting to appeal to me but the cost is just too much. I dont spend much time talking on the phone, most of the time is using the net or texting. £45 a month on a 24 month tariff to get the phone for free is way to much for me. My blackberry costs me £30 and I got it free on a 18 month contract.

Posted by masseur
those prices are a bit of a surprise when Apple said in the presentation that they wanted to make the iPhone more affordable!

Posted by Mr Miyagi
Note sure if the new iphone will support Flash. did anyone notice this?

at the prices on pay and go.

iPhone 3G S 32GB - £538.30 ??? seems reasonable as on prepay though. I mean if you look at the competition to Apple and the high range phones on sim free other companies offer, you will find for example the N97 sim free is £499.00.
[ This Message was edited by: Mr Miyagi on 2009-06-08 21:58 ]

Posted by masseur
yeah, but for £499 you'll get a sim free unlocked N97... this payg iphone price will still be locked to O2

Posted by jcwhite_uk
Tethering is tad expensive:
To tether you need an Internet Tethering Bolt On: 3GB for £14.68/month, 10GB for £29.36/month. Both include The Cloud's Wi-Fi

Posted by SloopJohnB
Does anyone know if voice control will be available to the iPhone 3G too? The idea of controling the iPod app using voice seems really cool

Posted by jcwhite_uk
As far as I am aware it is part of the version 3.0 software. i could be wrong though

Posted by SE-Naz
You think it will be that cheap SIMFREE???

I reckon it will cost more then that at 1st...

But from my point of you... its not a huge difference between the 3G and 3GS...

The software update makes up for a lot of things and when jailbroken you can get a few extra features... i.e. video recording...

Again depends what people need and want I suppose...

Cheers
ENJOY

Posted by Mr Miyagi
Well I am happy that the new 3.0 OS is available to be updated on the original Iphone

Posted by carkitter
I won't be upgrading to 3GS.
I'm more than happy with my 8GB 3G especially with FW 3.0 coming in a few days.

I expect the next phone I buy will be a
Even if something happens to my iPhone I'll probably get an Aino instead and an iPod Touch to make use of all my apps.

According to this page on Apples website it will be 3Gs specific

£1761.84 is a lot of money for a free phone! (based on the 32GB 3Gs over 24 months)

Posted by londonlad123
After seeing those prices I'm happy with my iPhone 2g.

Posted by SloopJohnB
Which one would you take: iPhone 3GS or Palm Pre?

Posted by apolloa
WOW! UK O2 pay as you go pricing is..er...pricey:

http://shop.o2.co.uk/update/paygo.html

Sod that! Over hyped and over priced, nothing changed with it then? If they sold an 8GB 3Gs they would be in a better position and it no doubt costs probably £50 to make a 32GB model then they are certainly making the money. But I think this will loose them sales.

One thing people have to remember o2 are giving you 12 month free Internet. Which I'd good. Plus it'l be interesting to see how many people now end up returning der palm pre in the USa. That phone is a copy of the iPhone inside it. It's laid out the same plus made by ex apple engineers. So see what happens.

Posted by ocean21
I'm tad dissapointed

Posted by driftmania
Funny how people complain about the "measly" 3MP on the phone yet they're probably the ones that are complaining that other phones have too many megapixels.

Posted by Mr Miyagi
That's true. But your not just paying that ammount of money just for the phone. Your paying for unlimited free Internet your paying for getting so many minutes and SMS free too. Plus it's not just a phone. It is an iPod as well as a movie player and so much more. As the apple saying goes. Your paying a premium price for a premium product. I have decided I will be getting this phone only wen my k850 dies on me and when it's out of warranty. In the mean time I wi also enjoy having my work iPhone. N it's only later on I'll be buying this one.

@mr miyagi.... i complained a month ago about not being able to send mms and having the bluetooth crippled and some other complaints i had about O2's customer services attitude and it got escalated to the complaints department and then to a manager and thats what he then stated as i wasnt happy with his months free line rental offer he gave me.

Hopefully its not as difficult to get as when the 3G first came out!

Posted by SloopJohnB
Some people are saying they are underwhelmed but I think iPhone 3G S was a big announcement. The video camera will be dead easy to use with good sharing and editing implementation. Voice control is really useful and really cool. Tomtom now has not only an app but also a car access. for the iphone that will also charge your iphone and allow you to listen to your ipod. Plus you have all the new apps with 3.0 and much more to come to take avantage of 3G S' unique features. What excites me more is the drive apple is giving to mobile development, by watching today's keynote it really seems they are ahead of everybody else. Even if other platforms have this os that function the iphone lacks, in terms of mobile develp. apple is leading the way. Having a limited hardware, software expertise, an effective store and allowing just one app to run together with apple's apps is really making things easy for developers since they always know pretty much how the apps are going to behave and what functions they can include and plus you can download the apps very easily using the store. This seems like a tough-to-beat combination to me.

Posted by RyaN
I'm a bit disappointed that it looks exactly the same, although I can understand Apple's rational, the 3GS now slots in nicely in store next to the 3G. It's almost like having a Macbook and Macbook Pro

As a 3G user, this one is getting skipped. I think if O2 gave existing iPhone customers the chance to upgrade early I would perhaps consider paying the ridiculous price of £184 to sign another £35pm contract. (but then i would need my head testing )

Actually the pricing is a complete joke. How on earth $199 converts to £184 i dont know. They really need to sort the pricing out, but they know they can get people signed up for that cost.

Posted by anonymuser
I'm happy with what was announced, they've improved the hardware enough to make best use of the new OS, but without leaving existing users (of the first gen and the 3G) high and dry in terms of the eco-system, since this is recognisably still the same platform with the same fundamental underpinnings, just better. It's good news for devs as well, which makes it even better news for everyone else.

I think they've done exactly the right thing with the camera, I'd be interested in seeing some video and still samples but I'll bet they're pretty high quality, 3.0MP is ample for a sensor of that size and if backed up with the right optics, software and processing (which I suspect it is) it may well surprise some people around here.

If I was choosing a brand new phone right now I'd pick up the 3GS in a second, there's nothing on the market now or planned for the future that would tempt me away. In reality I'm under contract with my 3G until April, by which time it may well be worth waiting until the next keynote, but I'm happy that my iPhone is going to be so well supported in the meantime.

40 million users of the iPhone/iPod Touch is an astonishing figure - does anyone know if there's a breakdown of that showing the split between the two devices?
