P1i deleted SIM contact, help please!

Guys, have any of heard of this misshap?

My friend's brand new P1i deleted all sim contacts overnight. Nothing done to it, just all SIM contacts erased. Anyone heard of this, and it is reversible??

When you go to contacts, you can see the contacts icon at the top but no list of any contact is displayed. Moreover, if you try MORE/VIEW FOLDER/ALLPHONE CONTACTS or MORE/VIEW FOLDER/SIM, again you dont get any list of contacts. However you get list of contacts -but only those from the phone, not from the sim card only if you approach them via messages. Is it possible that contacts in the sim card are lost forever?!?!?
