Migrating from WM to Symbian- Some ?s

Hi all,

Due to O2 discontinuing my XDA Stella (HTC Kaiser) and being damaged have been offered a P1i from Insurance.

Tis a big leap for me leaving WM until my contracts up for renewal next year.

My biggest task at the mo is my SMS. I have 8000+ stored on my XDA. few years worth carried over from WM to WM devices.

What is the OOB capacity of the P1i?

These 8000+ SMS (4000 Inbox - 4000 Sent) equated around 3-4mb of space on a WM device but I dont know enough about Symbian yet to see how things work under the hood.

I am currently playing about with exporting and deciphering with various WM apps and MPE but am waiting for my phone to arrive before I can play with importing.

If anyone can give me a heads up on the layouts of the various formats MPE uses to import and export that would be great!

From what Ive quickly scanned through, Im getting that the PDU is the most important data regarding SMS for MPE?

If I crack it all Ill gladly post a tut for everyone else who ever migrates.

Thanks for any help, seems this is the community to join for SE

Welcome to Esato..

You may soon realise that your forced move from WM to UIQ3 was a deportation by your insurance company rather than a migration

As for the transfer of your SMS you may first have a look at the following thread and others (via search):

It's a discussion which has been started at the time of an earlier firmware and I can't tell if SE has made any improvements in this dept. as I never keep such an amount of SMS's, but I'm sure that nothing has changed.

Good luck..

Interesting. I already have a P1 and moved up to the Kaiser
Good luck with the SMS stuff, I don't believe there is a working solution that involves UIQ3 devices.
Transferring your contacts and email shouldn't be a problem using Outlook and you get the added advantage of having a smaller device with FM radio but I'm afraid that's all. If you are not used to UIQ then you might not be quite happy with your new P1, also if you use it for navigation you will have to get an external bluetooth GPS as the P1 doesn't have an internal GPS. Finally, getting used to the P1 keyboard should be fun

@mazi, that is not the question. The problem is about transferring all the SMS messages from WM to UIQ3 or the other way around.
You can make a backup of your inbox using PCSuite but you will not be able to use that to transfer to WM (or even to another UIQ3 phone unless you become somewhat intimate with the Windows registry file)

Can't MyphoneExplorer do this?

I have never used MPE, but afaik it doesn't support WM.

And even if it would, the op is talking about the transfer of 8000 (!) sms

Well looks like the P1i is out the window seeing how O2 insure have none in stock and wont be again apparently... Only option which came close to the Kaiser is the N95.

So spent all weekend playing around for nothing I think I was on to something as well but needed a SE to play about with Now have to look into Import/Export software for Nokias.

Basically, Im sure one of the apps I used to export from WM gave the PUD number of the message so was going to transplant them into a MPE message and transfer to phone. If it worked right then it would be a case of a find/replace scenario or similar - you get the idea. Anyway cant even attempt it now

Thanks for the responses from you all though, much appreciated
