Sony Ericsson T700 Phone Unboxing Review

Posted by Plemix.com

As the T-series of Sony Ericsson is slammed into oblivion by the K-series, they have announced the new slim-styled T700 in an attempt to revival its classic T series. With the design which is inspired by T650, and robust set of must-have features that you’d expect from a Sony Ericsson phone. Seems it is simple but functional.

Standard stuff: a Battery, a Charger, a USB cable, a handsfree, CD and Manual.

T700 with a premium metal finish just like T650. Weighing in at just 78 grams and a thickness of just 10mm, the handset fits perfectly in one's hand.

The keypad layout and navigation pad is clean and clear. And so happy to see that Sony Ericsson have ditched the infamous navigation joystick and have replaced it with a sleeker D-pad.

The back of the phone. Very clean design layout: Black (which is made of metal) on Silver (which is made of plastic).

3.2 Mega pixel camera located at the back together with a self-portrait mirror. On the right side of the lens, it is the LED flash and the loudspeaker grill.

Here’s the M2 memory card slot which is located at the bottom of the phone.

On the right hand side of the phone, you may see a dual volume/camera control key and a sliding release key for the back cover.

On the left hand side, you may see a microphone pinhole and holes for attaching a neck or wrist strap at the bottom.

The TFT display measures 2" in diagonal which isn't quite what you'd expect in a higher mid-range tier handset. As a simple phone, it‘s still ok~

Here’s the standard Sony Ericsson Menu layout.

The phone has a timeless yet fresh Sony Ericsson design which is thin and reasonably small in size. The UI is user friendly and the quoted battery life is pretty good too with up to 9.5 hours talktime. However, the camera appears to lack autofocus and the small display will be the drawback. As a mid-level phone, T700 is more than enough to meet all your needs in daily with a phone.

nice unboxing photos!

how many new themes are there, compared with the c902?

Posted by Plemix.com
The version that I reviewed is the Asian Pacific version and it comes with three themes. One is called the Leehom and the other two are in chinese. Comparing to the C902, the C902 comes in couple more. The version of C902 that I see comes with Clarity , Futurism, Lazer Precision, Shuttershine, and the red carpet. Lazer Precision seems to be the coolest I think.

Any chance you guys will be selling the silver and black on silver? As you only have the red on black listed.

His username will give you a clue to that. He works for the store.

Great photos. Also seems that the phone comes with some new flash theme. It is interesting, maybe it's old but haven't seen that one.

Posted by tupperello
It seems it have stereo speakers by the official page, is it true?

Posted by strizlow800
Actually don't believe that until someone that has hands on experience with it... It may say stereo on the site, but are the speakers well placed to produce great sound?

Posted by muffins
The stereo speakers will be like they are on the W890i one on the back and the earpiece acts as another speaker only when listening to music, not when the phone rings.

When the phone rings only the back speaker is used.

How is the build quality...At the moment I have t650 and it isn't quite as rock solid as I expected...So a bit more information please And I just love the red on black version

Posted by QVGA
Doesnt look nearly as good as the T650

Posted by strizlow800
Well this is the 2nd T610 (based on the look and design of that phone)

Posted by allyn274
I got a brand new T700 yesterday. It's really nice. However - when setting it up, I chose language to be determined by SIM and most everything is in English - except a few file names are still in Chinese! I tried again setting the language to English (as opposed to "According to SIM") and still - a few file names in Chinese.

I can't find a way to edit the file names either since they are LOCKED files (having come with the phone).

Any thoughts?

Posted by Hek7or
I would like it more if it use Joystick instead of d-Pad .... I don't like dpads ....

It looks like the good old T610

Posted by gola
Well seems like joysticks have been phased out for now, so i don't think we'll be seeing them in SE phones any time soon.

Posted by Plemix.com
One major reason joystick is fading out because it is not durable.... Very easy to break. Hope this Dpad will have a longer life time

Posted by Plemix.com
The unit does come with stereo speaker function. Both front and back speakers generate sound when playing music. I compared the sound next to the w890i, to me, it seems the T700 has a better sound effect.

One bad thing is when holding it on hand. the plastic backdoor part gives you a less solid feeling.

We will have both color available very soon. both the silver and red.

One interseting thing worth mention is when moving the D-pad inside the menu, the unit does vibrate a bit.

Cool Im looking forward to getting one too. I think Im going to go for the silver one. Just a few questions.

1.What colour did you get?
2.How does the phone feel?
3.Does it have Mega Bass?
4.Is the top part metal?
5.Hows the keypad back lighting? ( I have a black W890 and a silver one and back lighting was on, on the silver one it was hard to read the numbers)
6.How does it compare to the W890 (if you had one)
7.If the top is metal and the bottom plastic how does the plasric look? Is it of a good quality?

Sorry for all the questions thanks!

Well that's one thing that my t650 also has and it's pretty anoying because I hear the vibration (I think the keys are shaking) not feel it :/ The function comes with enabled flash themes and you can't turn it off.

This is A W890I WITH DIFFERENT COVERS! How could it possibly take them an entire year to design a different cover??? Even the numeric keypad is identical!!!

Is not that easy to break.......... my only phone with problems in joystick was K700i ...

Exactly! Absolutely the same as W890I, only no 3G and more plastic and no Memory Card comes with the phone......and yes, it is more expensive than W890I nowdays.....this is about to laugh....or cry?

It does have 3G, but just no video call camera. But yeah I agree it's a bit ridiculous, especially when they try to market this as something special when in reality it's another copy-and-paste phone.

Posted by haki
Now, this explains the one-year delay! They needed ample time to perform the technological feat of REMOVING THE FRONT CAMERA! LOL! LOL!

Amazing!

I think they learned this from Nokia

Why not? I think a mid range phone with this spec level selling for <200 Euro would be a hit. I'm very tempted but I'll likely go for the W980 instead.

In the T700 thread I said this, and got no response.

It seems that this phone may not suit people for whom english is their only language... can anyone upload some screenshots of the foreign language only files?

That's not the screenshot I was after. It seems that even choosing English Language still leaves some files in the Original regional language. It's screenshots of submenus, especially Settings that I was hoping for.

whwt is the keys and d-pad backlight color?

Posted by xell
White.

Posted by strizlow800
And the white keypad illumination makes the phone look great. With a silver and black housing (and good theme) it looks PERfect hehe

Posted by digital-fire
The back-light illumination looks cool when you get an incoming call as it's like a wave effect starting from the bottom of the keypad and fades upwards... I don't find the back-light bright enough though. The keys to the far left or right can be hard to read (I guess they have a central column of LEDs rather than one behind each key).

If I buy the phone from Plemix.com, will it also come with a full 24 month SE warranty???

Please reply if you know and I will buy one right away

(then sell my K850i once it is repaired for Ģ200 lololol!!!!)

I like this phone!!! Slim, sleek, awesome T range, and finally HSDPA which is the only feature I really need.

Silly question - Which is the colour in the first post, black on silver right? Or shining silver? When I google for shining silver, it comes up with the black one.

@bhavv

you will get asian stock from Plemix. so assuming you are in europe, you wont get 24m warranty. you would have to send back to plemix.

you would need to double check if they stock they currently have has chinese keystrokes or just plain english. the one that plemix has shown in their review in this thread has the chinese keystrokes. these strokes dont bother me, many of my phones have had them

Oh well, I've gone and ordered it anyway as it was only Ģ163 with delivery. If I dont like it, it will sell for much more then that on Ebay. (Should be able to get Ģ200 for my refurbished K850i).

Im just worried with my K850i being so faulty that I dont want another phone like that one o.O.

The pictures in the first post all look like the phone is in English to me, which is fine.

Plemix offer 12 months warranty too, and if the phone is as robust and decent as my K800i, it will be perfect (My K800i has lasted me for 3+ years so far).

I also have phone insurance for Ģ6.99 a month, which I will change over from my K850i to my T700 .

I have wanted T650i with HSDPA for a long time now, here it finally is

I canīt understand people complaining about phones being similar to others. What is the problem with having more options when bying a phone. Just because the specs are identical I donīt find it to bad having different designs to choose from.

Agreed with this. I hate walkman branding and colours and have never bought a walkman branded phone. I just want to return to the wonderful T series, but the T650i didnt have HSDPA so I never bought it. T700 = T series, nice slim and light, aluminium design, plus HSDPA so thats all I want and care about.

The only problem is that web browsing on it will be a pain, but then I get a G705 when I upgrade for that purpose.

T700 now, sell K850i, and G705 in 6 months time with my upgrade =)

I am actually very very glad that I didnt sell my K800i. That phone is still perfection, just lacks HSDPA but has everything else I need for a backup handset (Normal 3G is fine while my K850i is returned and I wait for T700).

It has a D - Pad !!!! That is good, I thought it was a crappy joystick when I first looked at it. Browsing the net is horrible without the D-Pad.

If I update the firmware with sony ericsson's update service, it will remove the chinese software and replace it with English right?

@Strizlow: Every phone comes with new flash themes!

Anyone with the sequinity theme noticed the nod to the 31st Oct? Does it do that for other seasonal events too?

If you're right, then it could be like T650's themes. Every holiday has an impact on the standby screen.
Try changing the date to... say 14th Feb.

Yep - it changed to you know what! That's pretty cool...

Wow ... Paypal messed my order by providing an old unconfirmed address instead of my confirmed address o.O!!!

I sent paypal an email yelling at them and they told me they wouldnt do anything untill I reply without being abusive (lol), but Plemix already cancelled and refunded the order.

I have placed two other orders using Paypal this week, they all got processed automatically with my confirmed address, then I order a Ģ164 phone and it sellects an incorrect unconfirmed address from two years ago instead of the correct one.

Order with Plemix had to be cancelled, I then found the phone available on Ebay in the UK:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBay[....]110303646720&Category=3312null

This time I deleted all my old addresses in Paypal and it is all ordered to the correct address. I will email Paypal again to try and get them to explain why they didnt provide my confirmed address, the *^"$%^ nearly lost me a Ģ164 order if Plemix had dispatched it to the wrong address.
