I love my W902 - haven't had any of the issues that one or two users in this thread have reported. Can't believe how good this is for the first firmware release and don't anticipate SE rushing a revision out the door any time soon (I'm using unbranded software on an unlocked handset). It's still fast and stable after several months of use, and the battery cover movement is so small as to be almost unnoticeable.
My two top tips for making the phone faster:
1) Delete as much of the stuff (bundled pictures, ringtones, etc.) off the internal memory as possible, or if you wanna keep them, move them to the M2 card. Also regularly delete sent/received text & picture messages that you don't want. I've now got about 19Mb of free internal memory and the phone is noticeably quicker than when I only had 13Mb.
2) I've found that setting the theme to "Walkman" also increases the speed of the phone over other themes such as "Grape" (which I was using previously) - recommend others do the same.

If you want to stop the battery cover moving around (almost completely) ...
Use Electrical insulation tape in the 2 locations shown in the image. The white
bits :-] (I couldn't find the black tape .... so it's not colour matched at the mo !)

Thanks for the tips guys. Very helpful indeed.
Before tape i've used a piece of napkin ^_^

The phone currently costs 280 euro's down here.
Is it expected to drop even further, or is this as good as it gets?

The CDS-75 is the newer desk stand that has an adjustable charger port and a much thinner spine and no support for the back of the phone.
Pics of the 2 stands are below.Excuse the dust.The CDS-75 hasn't been used for a few months.

Are any of you having problems with the screen? When I push the softkeys I get 'pressure marks' on the screen (don't know the right word). I have to push the softkeys gently and precisely to avoid this.
Otherwise, a perfect phone! But this is a really annoying problem...

@riksox
Same problem here, you can see the backlight increase unevenly the softkey corner of the display with every press. I've learnt to deal with it on my 2nd day with the phone. I suspect it's a bad mixture of its materiality and slimness

hello all just got my phone yesterday with default firmware;
R3DA026; do you think i should/why update to:R3DA032? or any new firmware suggestions?
im afraid the performance may deteriorate if i change; any comments?

I have been thinking to buy a Volcanic Black w902 for a while now and have now the opportunity to get one reasonably cheap. Its 3 month old and have no scratches and cost only 300 euro, (which is quite low for such new phone).
how is the headset who comes along ?
Posted by mode
@King9
I've tried quite a few of Sony's headset range including the highly coveted MDR-NC500D. While the $400 MDR-NC500D may sound nice with W902, I'd say the HPM-77 was made for W902 because it has more volume, has similar accuracy and bundled together which means it's free. Try it first and tell us what you think.

ok, thanks. cant wait to hear the sound and snap some pictures with this splendid walkman phone, really nice

@mode, I definitely agree with you on the W902 and HPM-77. They sound great together. I tried using my Creative EP630s on my T700 with W902 acoustics and they didn't sound as good, even though I've always been using them with my other audio devices and liked the sound quality. When I reverted to my HPM-77s, the bass and clarity were impeccable.

Just wanna share the manual equalizer setting I use with you good people:
400Hz = +1 bar
1kHz = +1 bar
2.5kHz = 0 bar
6.3kHz = +3 bars
16kHz = +3 bars
Clear Bass can be set from 2 to 3 bars depending on whether or not you're a bass buff. I find that this setting spreads across all genres nicely, could be useful for those who are not keen on switching presets constantly. If you try it, do share your thoughts

I have the W902 now for 3 day's and a few problems.

Why isn't sony releasing this fw on their update service....I don't get why we have to pay sites like davinci or wotanserver to update the w902 phone-that-shuts-himself-down once in a while....sony is really pissing me off with this kind of a f#Šk-up...

Same for me, it shuts down 3-4 times a week. Even the activity menu hangs almost every day. I send it in for service. Just got it back so I dont know if it is any better. Now the phone is an W902plus.... Just realized that the company i got it from have imported phones and use third part firmware. So the warranty is not valid in official service centers. So if I want to update it I have to send it in to the company or buy credits at wotanserver. SEUS will not do a update.
I will not buy anything from that company any more...

Yeah, does anyone know what's the most current fw. I have R3DA026. Surely they can't think it's perfect. All of the stuff I said a few pages back and some of things you guys have pointed out are still nagging me. But the display pressure marks when you press the softkey...it's here to stay, so you should get used to it.

Oh shoot, where'd that pictures go? glorfingal, can you please re-post the image? TIA

I'll try and track it down and re-post the link !!

Still looking - one last location :-[
Posted by glorfingal
well after much searching I can't find the image - sorry about that.
I can remember that one piece has to go at the bottom of the battery
cover and the other goes at the top, on the left side when you look at
the cover from the inside.

I took a picture of my w902 with the tape. Hope it is to any help.

Thanks for the effort!
@All
If updated to fw R3EA037. Right now, I don't see any major difference (for almost a half year's wait!) except that the photo colour is warmer similar to C902. Photos captured in Auto setting seems a bit sharper. Photo fixed pictures doesn't have the small (often unnoticeable) dot of red green blue stripes. Loudspeaker has been reported to be louder and better though I can't really confirm this myself since loudness is subjective in different environments. Menu speed seems to be the same. Well...if anyone else have noticed any other improvements, you're welcome to share them

Where can I buy the Earth Green one in west-Europe ?
(or the Netherlands to be more specific).
Posted by bronxdude
would you guys happen to know how to repeat a track in the phone?
Posted by mode
You can't repeat the same track, you'd have to create a folder for it to repeat a single track. I miss this feature on UIQ Walkmans. Btw, does anybody know the extent of the image stabilizer function on this phone? I don't see any difference if it's switched on or off
Posted by superbonto
IMHO, when the image stabilizer is on, compared when it's off, the images will sharpen a bit. well, IMHO.
Posted by mode
@superbonto
I'm sure that's what it's supposed to do, but whether you can actually see any difference is a different story. I know I can't.
Posted by yacarob1975
i want this phone!:)
Posted by superbonto
haha
i mean, in the pictures taken with and without the image stabilizer, you (i mean i) can see the difference...
well, maybe if u dont see any differences, maybe your photo-capturing technique is great.
Posted by mode
@superbonto
Hmmm...that is a possibility haha

Hi, anyone encounter this problem? My W902 auto shuts down during charging when a call comes in. Sometimes, it shuts down during charging even without an incoming call.
Can a software upgrade fix it? My current software is R3EA036. What is the lastest software version?
Posted by superbonto
my current FW is r3ea037
the only trouble i had is when i installed a new java game, and prompt to start it, the phone automatically restarts.
other from that, none. CMIIW
Posted by afbug
I think my problem is due to the batt getting hot during charging and some software bug. My version doesn't restartt when i install a new game and prompt it to start.
Posted by SimonZ
Anyone know if SonyEricsson want to support again this model phone with news firmwares?
I've R3EA037 and my opinion is that is not optimized. I note that one game is missing without explanation, camera failure when switch in twilight mode and i must restart the phone leaving battery. There is R3FF001 version but is out only in Israel, why not for other country?
Is possible upload new main firmware with old filesystem?
Posted by Junz
u can, but flash it manually using a2uploader, and afaik with different main-fs, the flashlite will not work.
Posted by SimonZ
OK after some problem with A2, i've successfully upgrated only the main firmware of my W902 and now this is result:
R3EF001
PRG12067421_GENERIC_PT R3EF001
EROM 1200-4341
SEMCBOOT R6A017
...
PERSONALIZATION
1201-0083 R12A
1206-7411 R3EA037
CONTENT VERSION PA13
JAVA V. 8.3.3
my problem was that i couldn't upload customize and preload_config with A2 so i first re-upload old version with SEUS than i've flashed only the new main.
here's better explanation: Topic
Was better upgrade also the FS or not very important?

I am a newbie, hope I am doing this right. I love my sony phones! I first had the W810i (which by the way is still working today), then I got the W760. I have been happy with the W760 up until now. Now the phone constantly reboots it's self and looses anything that is stored in rom. I am tired of every few days reinstalling the phone. The problem seem to be getting worse as time goes on. Is a year about the life of the phone or what? Did I just get bad phone, maybe? I wouldn't mind having another W760, but I am worried another phone will result in the same problems. I don't want to keep putting out money in bum phones. I have also been looking at the W902 phone, which looks to me to be a cross between the W810 and the W760 minus the GPS and add a better camera. Which I have liked both phones so I am sure to like the W902. I just want some responses from people who have actually used the phone. Is it a good average phone? Does it have any rebooting issues?
Posted by mode
I enjoyed my W902 which I had till mid last year. The camera might disappoint you at first, not because it's not up to scratch but rather because the handling is different than your previous phones and once you get the hang of it you'll appreciate the quality. I was also very happy with the dedicated music keys which has always been useful especially in your pocket where you can access the music keys from outside the pocket as they are significantly yet conveniently protruded. It didn't have the reboot problem which you encounter but it is not as durable as my other phones. I may have had a bad one as no one has ever reported the problem that I had but after a few falls from my waist level (6-7 times, clumsy me but the phone is very thin and I came from a P990) the phone had a problem reading the m2 card at times. But like I said I never heard anyone else complain about this problem so i assume I had a bad W902 which boils down to luck. The auto rotate feature lags a bit and updating your music library may take a while but other than these small shortcomings it's a sleek, fun and convenient phone to have with you
