Official HTC Touch Pro Discussion

Call it Raphael no longer! HTC has officially thrown the cover off its Touch Pro today -- the QWERTY slider sibling of the recently-unveiled Touch Diamond -- which should cover the bases for those who loved the Diamond's keen looks but decided they'd go our of their gourds without a full set of physical keys at their disposal. Under that glossy black shell lies WiFi, HSPA with a solid 7.2Mbps on the downstream, Bluetooth, 2.8-inch VGA display, Windows Mobile 6.1 featuring HTC's TouchFLO 3D interface, a 3.2 megapixel camera, a half gig of ROM, and 288MB of RAM. It's not going to win any "world's thinnest" records with an 18.05mm waistline, but those five rows of textual healing don't come without a price. The first batch of devices will be Europe-bound in "late summer" with 900 / 2100MHz 3G alongside the quadband GSM and EDGE; North and Latin American versions are promised for later in the year.

Ah! so this is what people were talking about when they said HTC will release an X1 clone faster and at a lower cost.

So what's the verdict on X1 vs. Touch Pro? Spec-wise I mean. I know they are very very similar in spec, but I think the X1 just pips this... Am I right? Cause I thought the X1's white-paper recently told us it had doubled in RAM. I must say I prefer the X1's appearance, though this definitely looks awesome too.

Yep, X1's still the king.

Now it's 256 to 288 on Raphael, iirc.
X1 has a bigger display. Besides that...

Posted by Yakkaimono
The only thing I'm missing in the X1 is the accelerometer. Maybe that'll change. But the only thing in which the X1 is better than the touch pro is the screen imo.
So does Raphael support SDHC?

Posted by badassmam
The choice may come down to the UI. TouchFlo3D looks polished and easy to use while the X1 panels are slow at the moment and not that hot anyway (my opinion). The HTC will be out soon which is a big advantage.

I would go for HTC purely because the panels look boring and slow, TouchFlo3D looks easy to use, fast and just better eye candy. What about accelerometer? X1 doesn't have this does it?

Posted by Dogmann
Hi all,

How can this be an X1 clone if it is released first? just because HTC don't announce products 9 months before they launch. Doesn't make it a clone and who knows if the X1 will be better or not and until it launches we won't?

But just who will be left to buy the X1 by the time it arrives that won't already of taken this first with a Network subsidy. Besides a few SE fans that is, hardly enough to make it a sales success.

Just what Networks are going to stock this when they will have their own branded version of the HTC? well before the X1 is available and most likely cheaper to.

Marc

It does. From the specs page:
Expansion Slot microSD™ memory card (SD 2.0 compatible)

SD 2.0 is SDHC.

Posted by Yakkaimono
Didn't know that. Was asking myself what the 2.0 meant.
Thanks

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Ah so the X1 isn't really better apart from the screen. The appearance of the X1 still sells it for me, but I do agree with Dogmann. There won't be many buyers of the X1 because everyone will have bought this instead. Of course the X1 will sell, but its sales are going to be seriously hit by this.

Posted by KinnyFaifai
Agreed there!

Also, a 1340mAh battery not as good as the 1500mAh in X1, but much better than the 900mAh in the Diamond. I now favour this over the X1.

Posted by anonymuser
This will be the better choice for most people, if only because it'll be rebranded by most networks and offered much more cheaply than the X1. Technically there's very little between them, but that's not to say either is a "clone" of the other, they're just typical WM6.1 platforms for the latter half of 2008.

I'd be interested in a proper, head to head hands-on review of both together - anything else is just guesswork really. The paper specs can always mislead.

Personally I might just sit this generation out - neither of them really add an awful lot to the Tytn II, other than an improved screen, which is nice but not a must-have for me. I already have 6.1 thanks to HTC's recent update, so until WM7 is released later next year, I'm in no hurry to upgrade.

I currently own a P1i and as much as I like it, I've never owned a WM device before so fancy a change.

The other difference between the X1 and Touch Pro is the implementation of the ATI Imageon drivers. Will SE do a better job or HTC?!

Posted by Tsepz_GP
I would MOST DEFINETLY take this over the X1. IMO this looks a lot better and TouchFlo3D sounds great.

Posted by remirez
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the X1 has a GPS chip, but the Touch Diamond and Diamond Pro do.
GPS is gonna be a 'basic' feature for WM phones by the end of the year.
Kinda sucks.
I still do like the X1 design and size but this Raphael is really nice.

Low level stuff on the X1 has been carried out by HTC therefore graphic dirvers etc. are HTC's job on the X1.

The X1 has GPS as well but might lack the Accelerometer. The X1 also lacks VGA out, while the X1i has a ermmm... better processor than the Diamond Pro, but the X1a has the same processor as the Diamond/Diamond Pro. The X1 has a better screen although this might also result in fewer apps due to the wierd resolution.

Posted by remirez
You mention X1i and X1a, what version is coming to Europe?
I haven't seen any mention of the GPS on the whitepaper x1_wp_r3a.pdf.
I know it's been listed with aGPS on all websites except Sony eRicsson one and on the whitepaper.
Weird.
The accelerometer is a nice touch but not really a deal breaker.

WOW this thing looks beautiful. Does it also have a flash for that 3.2MP AF camera?!

So TMobile UK gets exclusivity. I'm just hoping this can run Android (yes I have chastised it in the past; yet learning more) or WM 7 when it debuts. THIS will give this thing wings.

Oh yeah .... TV OUT!

But I think I'll still await the BB Bold or the Nokia E71; unless I get impatient and get the N82.

ANyone else notice a them of smartphones & phones lately?

LG Shine, K850i, iPhone, BB Bold, HTC Diamond/Pro (iterations), etc. ALL are HIGH GLOSS surfaces.

@ Prom1
Here is a pic of the back of the touch pro. You can clearly see that it's a LED under the cam so it's only photo light.

Posted by Dogmann
Hi Prom1

No sure that it will be a T-Mobile exclusive as in the past HTC has made versions for the other UK Networks as well as T-Mobile all at the same time just with branded names. Although T-Mobile may get it first i wouldn't think it would be for long period before the other Networks get their versions. I seriously doubt that HTC would now restrict sales via just one channel as opposed to 4 as that really wouldn't make much sense business wise.

Agreed with Marc (shock) it's bound to also be the Vodafone V1xxx, the Orange Touch Pro, the O2 XDA Galactica, etc etc. Same as the Tytn II is known by about 57 different names now.

Posted by Supa_Fly
Wow such a tiny speaker on the back of the Diamond Pro .

See this looks so incredible when you're in TouchFlo3D but the minute you go deep its lam Windows Mobile Pro 6.1

Yeah BB Bold or E71 in the future - Bold a secondary thought because access to data will STILL be to expensive on my provider unless HUGE changes are made.

Is Win Mob 6.1 more "buggy" than UIQ3 ?

No. I'm using it now (free upgrade on the Tytn II) and it's just fine.

Aha...how much commision are you on for O2's naming conventions??
(Although O2 XDA Cylon would tickle me pink!)

Ah, and my ON-topic comment: this should be lovely, Touch Flo already works well, and with this h/w......

Just in from PC Pro magazine (UK). Food for thought.

http://www.pcpro.co.uk/blogs/[....]/24/just-in-htc-touch-diamond/

I’ve been using the HTC Touch as my regular phone for over a year, so I won’t deny it. I jumped up and down a bit, such was my excitement to hear about the new “improved” version - the HTC Touch Diamond. And I was almost buzzing with anticipation when it arrived in the office yesterday.

But I’ll be honest. My first few experiences with the phone have dampened my ardour. It looks quite nice, with its diamondesque back and glass-dominated front, but it’s so slow it makes a British tennis player look nippy around the court.

For example, the 3D animated menus don’t keep up with your commands - there’s a full half-second lag on occasion. When you try and use Windows Mobile rather than HTC’s TouchFLO interface it’s also slow. In fact, everything’s slow.

Posted by bavlondon2
Is that maybe becasue its not a final version? Also i read recently that the Diamond got a ROM update to improve speed of the OS but the Touch Pro should be fast anyway.

Posted by KinnyFaifai
With regards to slow speeds, I picked this link from the SE X1 discussion.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=430

Other developers have released tweaked ROMs which seem to improve things some what. As with all new handsets (devices), the intial software is never 100% to what end-users expect so overtime as new updates gets released performance will improve.

Posted by bavlondon2
BGR just done an article on the new ROM update asewll and its very posative. For Diamond of course.

Posted by ocean21
So adding more ROM could mean an increase of its speed?

Touch Pro hands-on photos and video HERE..

Posted by Dogmann
Hi all,

Well the Touch Pro is now available from Expansys @£519.99 outright or @£114.99 on a T-Mobile 18 month £35pm contarct with 700mins 1GB data and i can't remember how many texts. Which seems quite reasonable to me for what it offers.

I got mine yesterday fm expansys during my stay in Barcelona.

I bought it via my brother-in-law who lives here and didnt even pay VAT (16% in Spain).

Bundled with the car pack I paid € 581,- (incl. delivery)

Posted by amarkhera
Hi Myth,

I am from the UK, and in Barcelona at the moment.

Can you tell me which store you got the HTC from. 581 euros is fantastic!

Esp. as I have lot of euros saved from when the exchange rate was good!

Amar

Looks great!

Posted by MWEB
Looks like an F700 to me, i had one, the added keypad makes textual work a joy but adds greatly to the bulk and weight IMO.

Posted by myth®
@amarkhera

As mentioned in my previous post, I ordered it fm www.expansys.es, which is the Spanish site of expansys, or better, my brother-in-law ordered it with his credit card and I paid it to him cash.

And €581 is the price excl. VAT.
He entered a kind of a registration number in a field on the second page and the VAT was gone.

Yeah, I was a bit lucky

I think that I'll keep the Touch Pro for a while (never thought this before), since this little beast has really everything+ a PDA user may desire.
