Need a 5mp cam phone. Should I risk the K850 or wait for the C902?

Id like a SE 5mp cam phone but am not sure what to do. Before anyone says no I dont want to wait for the G900. Should I wait for the C902 or risk the K850? I really like the K850 but I am yet to meet someone who has not had any problems with it. Dust inside the lens cover, wobbly screen and BROD. I think fw 037 seems to have sorted a lot right?

The c902 looks nice and slim but they need to fix the pic quality. Im sure they will but Id prefer the K850 as it has a xenon flash.

What should I do? Will I regret choosing the K850? Or should I just wait until the C902 is out and see how that fairs?

buy K850. you will not regret yourself. (and if you do that, just send it back). it also only cost 300 euro right now, both green & blue.

have seen quite many pics from C902, and im not impressed. but but, i can be very wrong, maybe they are shoot with a crappy beta firmware

plankgatan did you have to return it?

If I were to get one what are the main things I need to look for where people have had problems so I can find them by looking for them rather than just stumbling over them whilst using the phone generally?

Posted by plankgatan
no. i sold my first one, it worked fine, i just got a contingency to buy a brand new K850 quite cheap . so i bought a new one and sold my first one.
(the first one i had was the very first K850 sold in Sweden, i got it 2 days before the big release ....(thats little funny i think)

I heard many people suffered from dust getting in the lens cover as well as even a loose screen. Was that a early manufactuering problem that is sorted in all new models now?

Posted by plankgatan
do you have P1 ???? thats a very very good phone, it will last a long time

(im thinking to buy one myself, i just love the design & everything)

Posted by bavlondon2
Man you didnt answer my question lol

Yeah I have a P1. I sold my 1st one but got it again after. Strange as I done the same thing with my old K800.

Posted by plankgatan
yes i think the dust was a early issue. BUT (believe or not), i have NEVER had one single reboot, BROD or dust issue with my two K850 (my first one had maybe 2-4 dust dots behind the lens glass, but it was nothing strange).

about dust behind the screen, i think is a very rare issue, not heard many people with that problem.

about dust behind the lens glass, (the dust came in via the speaker hole), i think fixed that later.

So basically that doesnt happen on new K850s any more? So its safe to buy it in that regard?

Posted by bavlondon2
bumped......

anyone?

Posted by kewsvnet
hey i have a k850i.....that BRODed....but to be honest I still recommend it...some of the phones i guess are buggy...but when they work...they are amazin!! love the UI....and if I am not wrong it is the only European phone available with m2 memory stick and micro sd both!!! compared to c902 it has a bigger screen and a xenon flash!! and i feel its cam module is still the best one out at the moment...i think its better than c902

Posted by bavlondon2
Yeah but I dont want to buy one and then go through weeks of getting it sorted and re sorted. The only thing what worris me is how dust seems to be able to reach inside the lens cover. I need to find out if that was just a manufacturing fault in early models but no one seems to know for sure.

I would wait for C902 to come. When it comes to mobiles, the more you wait, the better you'll get.

Posted by bavlondon2
Good point yes that is my rationale behind maybe waiting for the C902. Also the Play.com price is quite reasonable: £299

Posted by QVGA
Thats good. And even if you're not satisfied with C902, you probably will be able to get K850 much cheaper by then.

Yeah! Much cheaper price and much less headache (provided SE has sorted things out by then).

Can i challenge you to consider other 5 megapixel phones? The K850 would be a good choice but is there a particular reason why you are only after either the K850 or C902?

Posted by bavlondon2
Yes becasue I prefer SE. I have already had the N82 and the N95 8gb and although both take good pics they are big clunky and battery life doesnt not satisfy me enough. I dont care much for the whole "smartphone" argument. SE "dumb" phones are enough for me right now. Having said that I currently have a P1 haha but that will change as soon as I have decided on which of these I will buy.

To be honest I have always reverted back to SE after trying other phones.

I went to the K800 twice and same for P1. I think I have a natural aversion to SE.

C902... 8 illuminated camera touch keys

Posted by bavlondon2
Yeah thats great so long as they all work properly. I seem to remember some people reporting problems with the touch sensitive buttons on the K850 where by the buttons would go dead for some periods. I hope SE has fixed whatever the root cause of that issue was.

I had the same story like yours. Had k850 in dec then k810 then n82 then w890 and now m back to k850.

Hi bavlondon,

I love my k850i, poss the best phone I've had. Having said that I've had two big problems with it.

1. Lots of dust gets between the glass cover over the lens cover. I've sent it in repair to clean it up but within days it was back to how it was. I've since taken off the glass lens cover.

2. I banged the phone (not that hard) and the touch sensitive buttons stopped working. I again sent it in for repair and they've been working fine since. However now I'm scared of it happening again, you definitely cant treat it like an old w800!

Despite these things I still really like the phone, especially since the recent firmware upgrades.

I got mine back in December and is a week 37 build so maybe the problems i've mentioned have been fixed?

Posted by bavlondon2
How can you tell what build it is? I need to ideally find someone who has bought one like this week or very recently.

As for removing that lens cover is that not a bit risky? And does doing that not void the warranty?

With the touch buttons thats what I hope wont happen with the C902. SE showed they cant fix things from one UIQ device being rehashed to another so my thinking is will they make the same mistakes with the C902.

Will BROD soon be replaced with BLOD (blue line of deathL C902) lol

Posted by number1
get the k850i it's half the price it has a bigger a focal length than the c902
c902 = 4.2mm
k850 = 5.2mm
also the k850 has a proper xenon flash, not a led flash with a stupid name.

Posted by bavlondon2
Yeah I was actually looking for focal length figures of the C902 but no one came back to me on that until now so thanks.

I think I will wait a little longer until SE fixes more bugs in the K850 and then go for it. Hopefully they will eventualy fix all the bugs lol

You can see what week build it is by removing the battery and pulling out a small piece of white card (you might need tweasers to get at it tho) with such information as the imei.

As for removing the glass its stuck on with a thin sticky back plastic in a O shape. The glass easily pops off this. I guess I'd be able to put it back if I found a decent sticky back plastic. Otherwise my warranty is void.

I have had the phone for a while now though, if it were brand new I'd be annoyed with dust behind the glass, but if its been fixed in newer models then thats a good thing.

I m planing to buy k850 again too, is the best SE I had

I prefer the N82 myself and it takes better pictures i think and better video and phone is more robust. K850 has been disaster from day one dont phone manufactuers ever test their phones before release. Makes me wonder.

Posted by soane28
sounds like the K850 is the right option for you. I wouldnt hold my breath on the c902 camera quality, esp with the focal length much lower than the K850, and the lack of xenon flash.

If i am right i saw laffen's C902 shot's EXIF data and it says that the focal length is 5.18mm

@bav:

Patience my friend, a little more waiting makes your satisfaction better SE is scheduled for a storm of announcements and release this month, and we may as well see Shiho soon. so be patient

I am also thinking of getting the K850i just wish it had GPS

Yeah I know what you mean man N82 is a nice phone. But I had it and it wasnt for me. I found it too bulky and battery life wasnt all that either. Plus I prefer SE UI.

Thanks Razec. Can anyone confirm the focal length value for the C902?

Many have actually said to me to wait for Shiho. Could be a good idea but I need something half decent in the next month or so. Perhaps the mid range C702 is a better option and then just wait for Shiho.

Thanks for your replies all.

i think c902 will not produce similar pictures like K850. it "have" a thinner cam module then K850. (i read about this some weeks ago. trying to find that page). sure, we cant say anything before we try c902 for real, maybe it will produce better pics when it really out.

c902... look at the strange exif data about c902 model ???

c902

c702

Based on those pictures above is it just me or does the C702 pics look smoother and nicer?

Posted by darknoob
yep, C702 took better picture...

Posted by number1
c702 has a advantage of less megapixels to coupe with, so pictures will be smoother and nicer, thats probley why se gave it a smaller focal lengh because if it had the same sized focal lenght as the c902 then it would out perform it very easily.
