@plankgatan

The SO905iCS will not be released here in Europe or indeed outside of Japan - it wont even take a regular SIM card, it requires a 'jailbreak' - a friend of mine who is a designer for Sony Ericsson has confirmed this - sorry Guys!

"The Japanese always seem to get the best technology and it's a shame that the NTT DoCoMo SO905iCS will never make it globally. Still, Sony Ericsson has an alternative for everyone in the shape of its K850i Cyber-shot mobile phone, which should be more than enough to make up for it."

sorry bud... it wont go anywhere globally other then japan...

Plank, I like it too. This one is sadly only for Japan:( But the size my friend.. It is rather big...

Posted by goldenface
I too think it would be a bit on the thick side for European tastes AND it would be very pricey too.

Posted by driftmania
Yeah, it'd way too thick for people to accept in places other than Japan. I wouldn't mind since it's as thick as my old W900i.

Posted by QVGA
It would suffer the same fate as W900 did.

Posted by JC08
I hope se brings this type of design- maybe a bit smaller - to Europe and the rest of the world.... I really like it!

Posted by goldenface
I never had a problem with the W900i / S700i and I would be prepared to sacrifice size if the optics and other feature were also to be improved.

Posted by Aware
Exactly, Goldenface! Some people care more about what a device can do, as opposed to what it looks like.......

Mentioning no names, I can think of a ~20mm thick phone doing rather well right now......

Me too

yeah but they are mostly, or all Nokia. People expect SE to bring small, stylish phones.

I would love to see sample photos taken by this baby

Samsung G600/G800 - sacrificed size for ability(why they're not U series)

K850 - same(~17mm thick)

LG KU990 - same(~15mm)

Most people realise that a decent camphone needs a decent sized sensor/lens assembly, and hence, will not be so 'small'......
...and I for one, expect SE to bring high performance before they worry about making a device diminutive......

Not sure if the SO905i and SO905iCS use the same camera but there are some samples of the former's on flickr of which I am unable to post because of work restrictions.

I would see this one here in Eu, I would get it without debut..

Thickness aside, it is long and wide; and it's a slider. you would have around 20 cm long phone. I don't mind due performance side, but you all must admit it is big

BTW. If you haven't, here you can look how it looks in giancito's hands:

N95 is not very small, and no one is complainig about it size.
i think this phone would blow N95 away!!

Posted by EddieAdams
It is big too big for my taste, but it would still do well. I just can't believe they made a phone this big, with that good of a camera, and didn't include a xenon flash!

Posted by goldenface
Thats a point. Hopefully the quality of the photos would make up for it but lack of xenon is puzzling when you consider the size.

Posted by QVGA
The reason why this is so thick is because it has optical zoom. I'm surprised no one mentioned that.

Just had a flick through to that thread and my lord! This phone is huge! Either that or it's just big and the guy who's holding it in the pictures has midget hands. I thought before I saw those pics that I could deal with the size but that is totally off putting. Let it stay in Japan.

Damnit ricky you beat me to it. I had midget jokes lined up for days. I thought Giancito bought a new sony bravia flatscreen. That thing is huge but, like I said it would still sell well. Look at the N95.

Posted by kenoby
N95 doesn't give me that feel. I had it and I accepted it's size, but this is a piece of brick, honestly..

Posted by razec
@Plank. SO905iCS uses the new Exmor CMOS Sensor, not CCD. btw this type of sensor is the new specialty of the Sony Alpha DSLR-A700

Posted by kenoby
^^^ While you're at it, you know any phone cam w CCD? I would really like to know. Except for 901. Sorry for going of topic.

Posted by razec
Somehow here are the ones familiar with me:
-Sharp 902
-Sharp 903
-Sony Ericsson S700
-Samsung Z710
-imobile 902
-casio exilim Japanese phone(can't remember the exact name )
-Samsung B600
-etc

maybe we should ask "Abu-Basim" regarding here as he have more knowledge when it comes to that subject @Abu: can you?

And I thought my i-mate JASJAR was large . . .

Posted by kenoby
It is sad that is stagnating... We're in 2008 and is at 5.1 mpx in Japan (and of such size) while Samsung already had 7.0 mpx in 2005..

@ razec, thanks.

@razec,

The only other CCD-based camera phones I can think of:
LG KG920
Gigabyte g-cam

Both of these use the same Sony ICX495 sensor as i-mobile 902, AFAIK.

SaLiH compiled a longer list but I'm late for work so I can't search for that thread right now.

OMG i forgot those phones! i actually have infos about them but i failed to remember those

Just Add to the list:

Sharp GX30: has 1 Megapixel CCD too basically the first megapixel phone to be sold and the first to have a solid 1 megapixel image quality because of the CCD sensor

still wondering, why se doesnt release certain fones all around the world. its like nokia would release certain models only in finland and scandinavia. to be honest, i wouldnt miss those japanese toys in my life, but why isnt the rest of the world worth to use those fones? se isnt that succesful or beloved, that they could allowe themself not to focus on the world aswell... its up to them, but their marketing strategy was always a joke.

Lets see what the new SE president could do for this mate IMO mr Komiyama(SE president) should follow the SE Japan Standards in high-end products

Posted by kenoby
Most, if not all Asian brands have different models in their home country. I think it is Sony the one who's managing the brand for Japanese market.

Correct me if I'm wrong..

Posted by Aware
According to xumdeo, SE Japan are a law unto themselves! They have no obligations to work with SE R.O.W., and we're not supposed to expect 'our' SE to get the lovelies that SE Japan produce(so Bravia LCDs are out then, and the ever-cool SO903i)......

Which makes us lucky that we actually even got Z800/W900/W880 from them......

(If you think I like these facts, think again)

SO905iCS is smaller than JASJAR

Some dimensions for a comparison:

SO905iCS: 113 × 50 × 24mm
i-mate JASJAR: 127 x 81 x 25 mm
N82: 112 x 50.2 x 17.3 mm
N95 8GB: 99 x 53 x 21 mm
N93i: 108 x 58 x 25 mm
W900: 109 x 49 x 24 mm
N93: 118.2 x 55.5 x 28.2 mm

Btw the camera censor is not CCD, but CMOS: link

@jakontil

lol, thats a funny comment lol!

And no, Sony Ericsson Japan is not a separate entity to Sony Ericsson (Rest of World) - it is because the Networks such as NTT DoCoMo regulate what each series (ie. 905i) features.

However, the simple fact remains that back home in London etc - the market demands are different - it would be like Orange or Vodafone telling Sony Ericsson what to do - that would be horrid!

So while yes, the Japanese Sony Ericsson's are designed and engineered by Sony Japan (Rest of World is Ericsson) - Sony Ericsson Japan is in fact more under the design COSHH that Sony Ericsson Europe!
