Hi all,

As discussed in the Dogmanns N95 8GB review Part 1 thread here is a simple debranding guide this is not my work so i take no credit or responsibility for it that goes to Rich @The Nokia Blog and the other sources he has credited.

Nokia N95 Debranding Guide

Hi,
I have seen that a lot of people on various forums/blogs are in need of a guide showing how to debrand the Nokia N95.

Therefore I thought I would provide one. The information that I have collated to make this guide is found on various sites, these are referenced at the bottom of the post. Please also note that you run this procedure at your own risk; although I have performed this (3 times) with perfect results there is always the possibility when flashing your phone that you may damage it. If this happens you will require a Nokia service Centre to restore it.

The Guide:
1. Ensure that you have installed the Nokia PC Suite (on the CD supplied with the phone), make sure that your phone is connected via the USB cable and that it has been detected.

2. Download the following 2 pieces of software:

Nemesis Service Suite - Direct download here

http://www.b-phreaks.co.uk/NSSDownloadLanding.htm

The Nokia Software Updater - Note, although at the time of writing the site does not list the N95, the updater does include the updated N95 firmware. Therefore simply select the N93 instead, this will then allow you do download the updater.

3. Install Nemesis Service Suite. Open the program and then click the "Scan for new Device" icon in the top right of the screen. The screen should then be filled with information, click the "Phone Info" button at the top of the screen. Then click the "Read" button. Amongst other things this will show you the current product code of your phone. You now need to change this to a generic Nokia code. A standard code for the UK that you can use is 0534841, for a full list of codes see The Nokia Blog. Replace the current product code with this new code. Then check the enable box and click the "Write button". You have now changed your phones product code! You can double check this by clicking the read button again, this should show your new product code.

4. You may at this stage wish to back up you contacts/files to carry over to the unbranded phone, to do this use Backup utility within the Nokia PC Suite.

5. You now just have to install the new firmware update. Make sure that you phone is connected to you computer through the USB cable and then open the Nokia Software Updater that you previously downloaded. Follow the step by step instructions and install the new firmware. Do not at any time disconnect the phone until it tells you that it is safe to do so. Note the phone will restart itself during the update process.

6. That's it, you phone has now been debranded! You can now restore your files/contacts by going back into the Backup utility, however I suggest that you do not restore settings to the phone as this puts back some annoying operator defaults such has changed menu layouts.

7. If you wish to update your phones firmware in the future you simply need to use the Nokia Updater as usual as your phones product code will not need changing again.

UPDATED INFORMATION

Hi all

Just a quick update despite what it says in 6 personally i do not recommend restoring anything that you backed up once you changed the product code as this can lead to problems it may not but please do not restore from a back up is my advice.

thx i have nss, but it doesnt support mini usb cable... does your one support it?

Posted by Dogmann
Hi Boba,

Yes otherwise i wouldn't of been able to debrand the N95 8gb as it only has a mini USB although i use it on my old XP Laptop that i keep especially for updating phones. What exactly is not working?and what if any error messages are you getting? also what OS is the computer running?

Hi All..
Just to let you know- have debranded my new O2 E90 with above method!
Couldn't be easier! Just had to get the E90 product codes via google!

worked like a charm, thx put turkey language on n95 8gb last night

Posted by voda_jon
oh and if u search on ebay for vodafone nokia n95 8gb unlock theres a guy selling unlock codes for £20.... tried it myself and it worked perfect so i now have an unlocked, unbranded (save for the small vodafone logo on the back) n95 8gb....

The guys name is timunlockpro or somethin like that.

Enjoy!

Posted by scottt
done exactly same as you john. Got the unlock code off a guy off ebay came in about 24 hours and worked a charm. Now to find a generic rear housing to fully debrand this black bad boy hehe

Posted by Dogmann
Hi all,

Well i should mention that if you are an existing VodaFone customer they will sell you the code also for £20 immediately, mine was already on the system so my E-Mail with the unlock code arrived while i was still on the phone to him. To say i was surprised at how fast i got the unlock would be a massive understatement as it took less then 5 minutes.

Balls - followed guide. Worked perfectly - phone unbranded.

However, I then restored the back-up - i.e. contacts, etc.

When it restarted, i got the "phone startup failed contact the retailer" error. I have tried all the things I can think of, including a hard format ("*"+"3"+"Call button"), without any joy - I think it has reformatted, as no longer asking for pin code. But still the same error.

Any other ideas, or am I going to have to send this off to Nokia to get this sorted? It was on Vodafone UK originally, but I am assuming that since I have unbranded, they won't want to know.

Any ideas?
Cheers

Problem solved. If anyone else experiences this problem, in order for the 'hard format' to work, it appears that you need to release the 4-key combination as soon as the Nokia screen appears. You will then get taken to the screen where you input the country, set the time, etc.

Thanks again do dogmann for posting the guide, and everyone who has contributed.

Cheers

Hi all

I have updated the original post as IMO it is not advisable to restore a backup once you have updated and changed the product code as it can cause problems.

Hi, I followed the guide but it didn't debrand the phone, it still has oranges crap all over it :'(

When I chose read, it came up with my product code, so I thought if I didn't need to change the code, why did I have to click write? What else is written to the phone? I clicked write anyway, and all seemed OK.

After reading the guide again, I realist that I should I have changed this to a generic code.

I have looked at the product codes here...

http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=162207

but I don't know which one I should use, maybe 0549174: EURO-1 ?

currently my phone is this...

0566152 RM-313 N82-1 (Black) Orange UK

It came with the latest firmware already installed 20.0.062, but the Nokia Software Updater let me reinstall it (after a failed first attempt, very scary lol)
(this didn't fix the prob I have with the music player. It just hangs, saying opening) I only got the phone yesterday :'(

Hope you can help

Thanks

EDIT: OK, I couldn't wait any longer lol, so I went with 0549174 and I think it worked because the main screen layout has changed, but I still have the orange photo icon in the menu which I cant delete :/

Also, all my contacts are still on the phone, and my wi-fi settings are still there, does this mean that it did not update, even though NSU said that it had?

And the music player is still freezing :'(

Hi spanky,

Well if you still had all that Data and the Orange icon still there i would say it hasn't changed.

I would suggest starting at the beginning again and taking it slow, first check in NSS that the product code has changed to the one you want. If not change it and write it to the phone then check again by reading the phone as there is no point in doing anything else until it has been changed.

Then re flash it and it should be as a brand new device make sure the battery has a good charge and is plugged in and charging whilst you flash it and be patient and let it finnish before you touch it again, good luck .

Still no joy, NSU says that the phones software has bee successfully updated, but really it hasn't. Only the main screen layout has changed, and keylock has been switched on!

Looking in the phones device manager, it says that the phone has not been updated

I checked that the product code had been changed from the first time, and it had. So I changed it back to the original, restarted the phone, then changed it to 0549174 again, checked it, restarted the phone, and did the update again. No joy

Tried updating with no sim, and with the phone in off-line mode but nether of these are allowed by NSU, also tried it with an orange pay as you go chip in there, but that didn't change anything ether. So I think it's safe to say that it has f**k all to do with the sim card? lol

Would trying another code be worth a shot, or is it not updating because I already have the latest firmware?

What codes could I try?

Which of the Euro codes is for the UK?

If I get it wrong, does it change the language?

This is driving me nuts

@dogmann

hey i debranded my orange n95 8gig to euro 1 firmware but whats the code if i wanted to rebrand back to orange?? i did a search on the net and found nothing well loads of n95 codes but hardly any branded n95 8 gig ones ??

Posted by Dogmann
Hi Mr[Nik]

Sorry no idea as i haven't had a N95 8GB since January so am out of touch with that device, i would suggest Google is your friend.

@spanky 69

Really not sure what is going on but does it show a different firmware or just the same number to reinstall? Yes if you change to certain product codes it will change the languages just make sure you have one that has english. Sorry i can't be of more help but i don't have your phone and have never had any problems similar to yours. In fact i just changed my E90 back from an APAC code to generic UK code and flashed to the latest firmware without any trouble at all.

I've come across a slight problem with debranding my N82, I've understood the guide you've wrote with no problems, however when i've got round to update my software with nokia software updater; it's saying i've already got the latest software, is there anyway to force the same software so im able to debrand my phone?

Also, i've changed my product code in NSS, will this affect my phone if i didnt flash new software?

well thanks for this guide, my debranding worked flawlessly on the N95.

used the product code from front page and now the most up to date firmware is loaded.

N82 - i would assume it will be the same. just change the product code.

also, i read that changing the product code invalidates the warranty, is this true?
