How much quicker should GPRS Wap be than normal Wap. I was under the impression that you would see a noticable difference between the two, but seems the same speed to me.

I am using the settings from Sony Ericcson if that helps?

Cheers

I think GPRS is supposed to be quicker because you dont have to wait for it to dial up a connection... but I think the tranfer rates are supposed to be the same. Though I can't swear to that.

It also might change from one network to another. I think it is the same on Orange partly because I think I remember reading that it was, and partly because they offer a High Speed Data package which they probably wouldn't if GPRS was really nifty

When u use HSCSD then GPRS should be about twice as fast, but you wont notice a big difference cause wap pages r only a few kb.

Theoretically, GPRS offers fast browsing speeds, but in reality in say a city during peak hours, you are not likely to get more than the speed of an average CSD connection (downloads of 1 k per second). In less-congested areas, you should be able to clock 5k per second though.

The reason is that each GPRS connection shares the cell's bandwidth resources with all other ongoing connections. If youhad all the available slots to yourself, you'd clock over 100kbps

Take a look at this article by Steve litchfield: http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk/introgprs.htm

AYA, you just dug up a two year old thread!

Posted by OluYom
The thread may be old, but the question is still relevant, and so is the answer :-D BTW, any rules against that? :-)

Posted by govigov
Yeah, why? Did you do that on your phone? Anyways i have bookmarked for future reading.

Posted by whizkidd
No rules as such! But i don't think the guy who originally created this thread would be around! :-D

HSCSD offers the fastest speed.
GPRS offers faster than CSD speeds, but can degrade to a full stop if there is enough usage in the region.
CSD is a solid speed, but again, GPRS normally his running quicker.

UMTS - well - that's just the shiznit.

Both act or struggle as per communicational situations.

I'm getting excellent gprs prefer right now probably because i am the only guy in my town using it! :-D

Posted by govigov
Yup. I guess the antenna must have bent and is now facing whiz's home. :-D

Posted by whizkidd
Rofl :-D actually, I've noticed a rather wierd bend on the mast of my service provider! Just kidding! :-D:-D

@Whizkidd: See what good I have done digging this up . GPRS where I am is no faster than normal CSD at the moment. Unfortunately, using CSD is madness here because of the cost. So, I am stuck with GP. Not that I am complaining; no. It serves me well enough. I do intend to put my network operator on their toes shortly.

Posted by govigov
Aya, we dont have csd here. So cant check. Thanks.

Posted by OluYom
@govigov: My operator, Glo, does not have CSD either, but they are the only GPRS-enabled platform here, so all others actually run CSD - and that, at exhorbitant costs, so 'no-one' uses it.

Posted by whizkidd
Er..this might sound stupid, but whats CSD anyway? Whats the difference between it and plain gprs?

Posted by OluYom
@whizkidd: Its not stupid; none of us knows everything. CSD means Circuit Switched Data. Its dial-up via GSM, and you are billed for time you stay connected as against GPRS' billing for data transferred.

Posted by chill_lee
just passed by.... so how is GPRS billed by?? av just set it up and unlike the CSD connection it says blah blah blah Kb received etc... wots that mean? and hows that charge?

fanku

Posted by whizkidd
I don't have to worry about that. No matter how much i use my gprs, i always pay a fixed rental of 150 indian rupees per month. Thats about 3 us dollars.

Posted by OluYom
@chill_lee: GPRS is billed according to size of files, pages, data loaded/transferred. This is measured in kb (1024 bytes). Can also be billed flat rate as in Whizkidd's case.

Posted by whizkidd
I feel that the flat rate type is more value for money for the likes of me who use gprs very heavily.

Posted by govigov
i pay about 5 and half dollars flat. ppretty good, eh? you guys should come to india to know what call rates are. i can talk up to 45 minutes local for just one dollar!!!!! (with my earlier connection, may be one hour talking will give me a bill worth a dollar.)

Posted by whizkidd
I think india's got the worlds cheapest call and data transfer rates.

Posted by govigov
i think it is korea and not india.

Posted by whizkidd
Really!?

Posted by OluYom
@whizkidd: The flat rate would be a very cost-effective option. But seeing there's only one GPRS network in Nigeria, that may remain a dream for a while. 1mb costs about US$5 here. Call tariff: Talking 1hour costs about US$20!

please help
how to activate a GPRS on K500i

Posted by whizkidd
The first step would be to call up your service provider and tell them to activate your gprs. After the activate it, they will send you the settings via sms. You save those settings and select it as your wap profile and you're ready! Have you activated your gprs?
